Patented Dec. 13, 1949 SAFETY ATTACHMENT FOR STOVES Elmer A. Demers, Dedham, Mass.
Application January 4, 1947, Serial No. 720,277
Claims.
1 The invention relates to a safety attachment for stoves and especially an attachment which will act as a guard for preventing the accidental turning, or turning by children, of the handles to the valves which control the supply of fuel.v
such guards, although it may be applied to new stoves.
The attachment can best be seen and understood by reference to the drawings in which it is illustrated as applied to guard the handles 'of valves which control the supply of fuel to an oil range, and in which Fig. 1 is a view in front elevation of a guard so applied, one of the guards being shown moved to an open position by which access may be had to the handle, normally enclosed by the guard,
for turning it.
Fig. 2 is a view in rear elevation; and
Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig.1.
Referring to the drawings: l represents a pipe fixture, with which the stove is ordinarily equipped, bearing a dial plate 2 over which turns a handle 3 for controlling by its turning a fuel supply valve (not shown).
In practice two handles are employed for controlling separate valves.
The present guard attachment comprises an apertured base portion 4 with removable cap 5 which together enclose a handle 3 upon the application of the base portion of the attachment to the outer face of the dial plate in surrounding relation to the handle.
The top of the cap is preferably made of some transparent material through which the handle and any indications on the dial plate may be seen when the cap is closed. The cap may be secured to the base portion 4 of the attachment in any suitable manner. As shown it is secured thereto by a hinge connection 6 including a hinge pin l on which is arranged a coil spring 8 with ends bearing, respectively, against the side of the base portion and that of the cap and by which means the cap is held normally closed.
The guard attachment is detachably secured to the dial plate in the following manner. Formed within the base portion 4 of the attachment and leading from the outside to the interior thereof are slots Ill, ill. Each of these slots is a relatively wide slot of some considerable length but of little depth or thickness. Inserted from the outside and slidable within these slots are 2 clips ll. Each of these clips, angular in form, comprises a leaf I2, sliclable into and out of the slot Ill within which it is contained, and on the outer end of this leaf, outside the base portion '4, an angularly turned leaf l3 which laps by the edge of the dial plate, the two leaves thus occupying an overlapping and underlapping relation to the edge of the dial plate.
The two clips are drawn into engagement with the opposite side edges of the dial plate by means of springs l5, l5, which extend, respectively, on opposite sides of the pipe fixure l, and the ends of the springs are secured, respectively, to the angularly turned leaves I3 of the respective clips. The pull of the springs when tensioned will then act to draw the clips into engagement with the opposite side edges of the dial plate. The extent of their movement in attaining such end will depend upon the size of the dial plate, the socketing of the clips with slidability in their sockets, and the tensional control exerted by the springs admitting of considerable adjustable variation in accomplishing this end. The springs when under tension holding the clips in place will bear, respectively, against the opposite sides of the pipe fixture I as shown in Fig. 2. The pipe fixture will then act to prevent lateral displacement of the springs and that of the entire attachment, the same being held fixedly in place.
The guard presents an attractive appearance and adds to the finish of the stove.
I claim:
