SAFETY SHOW-WINDOW.
sPEcIFIcATIoiv forming part of Letters Patent Ne. 249,099,
dated November 1, 1881.
Application filed March 16, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may coneern:
Be it known that LWILLIAM HENRY RUsH- FORTH, of Camden, State of New Jersey, have invented a new Safety-Window for the Display of Jewelry and other Goods, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a show-window so construeted and arranged as to be capable of use for the display of goods in the ordinary manner, and also capable of being raised orlowerel by appropriate mechanism into a fire or burglar proof Chamber, \'ault, or safe, located either in a lower or upper story of the building, without removing or disturbing the goods in the window.
In the use of show-windows of the ordinary construction it is necessary to remove the goods from the window in the evening', and each morning' replace and rearrange them for display. rI`his operation in many kinds of business, especially in that of the jeweler, occupies a (-onsiderable time and forms a lahorions and expensive item of each dayls work.
My invention does away with the necessity of the daily removal and replacing of goods in the Window, and provides a means by which the window and its contents may at will be raised or lowered into a place of safety, as above mentioned.
In the drawings, Fig'ure 1 is a sectional front elevation of a store provided with my invention; Fig. 2, a front elevation of the same; Fig. 3, 4a sectional plan view on the line a: yof Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 a perspective view of a window of a suitable kind for use in carrying out my invention.
A represents the show-window, which in the present instance is shown as an ordinary boxwindow, provided with sides of glass, and either top or bottom of such construction and material as to be fire and burglar proof.
B B' are window-ehambers of ordinary form, and each adapted to inclose and contain such a show-window as the show-Window A.
O is a fire or burglar proof vault or safe located in the cellar, and of proper form and dimension to allow the window A to be lowered into it; and D is a Vault or safe similar to O, with the exception that it is located in an upper story of the house instead of in the cellar.
It is obvions that any convenient mechanism may be employed to raise or lower the Window A. In the drawings I have shown two ways of accomplishing this end.
E is a stem or post rigidly attached to the bottom of the left-hand window A. Its lower end terminates in a piston, F, which Works in a chamber, G, into which water is to be forced through the orifice El. By means of this mechanism the window A may be raised or lowered, or retained in any desired position.
I represents a stem or post rigidly attached to the bottom of the right-hand window A, and provided throughout its length With a rack.
J is a pinion mounted upon a shaft journaled in the walls or sides of the window B', and adapted to engage with the rack upon the stem I, and thus operate to raise or lower the right-hand window A.
I do not eontine myself to the exact construction of window shown, nor mechanism by Which it is raised or lowered into the vault or safe.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. A safety show-window consisting' of a window-Chamber, a window vault or safe, and a show-window box, the latter adapted to be raised or lowered at pleasure into said window charnber or vault by appropriate mechanism.
2. In combination, the window-Chamber B', vault D, and show-window A, the latter provided with a rack-and-pinion raising andloweringmeehanism,a1lsubstantially asdescribed.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name this 3d day of February, 1881.
WILLIAM HENRY RUSHFORTH.
