UNITED STATES PATENT oEEroE.
WILLIAM E. WILKINSON AND GEORGE L. MUMMERT, OF YORK, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNORS TO YORK SAFE & LOCK COMPANY, OF YORK, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENN- SYLVAN IA.
SAFE-DOOR.
No. eoaeee.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM E. WILKIN- SON and GEORGE L. MUMMERT, citizens of the United States, and residents of York, York county, Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safe- Doors; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the figures and letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to improvements in safe doors, the objects being to provide an improved construction and arrangement of protecting frame and doors for protecting the bolt and lock work from dust and atmospheric influences or from being tampered with, but without concealing the parts from view when the safe door is open.
The invention consists in certain novel details of construction. and combinations and arrangements of parts all as will be now described and pointed out particularly in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is an elevation, partly broken away, showing the inside of a safe door embodying the present improvements. Fig. 2 is a detail section with parts broken away and on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a detail plan of the center of the top of the door shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail vertical section taken on a central plane at the bottom of the door shown in Fig. 1.
Like letters of reference indicate the same parts in all the views.
The bolt work and locks of the door are mounted on the usual door plates indicated by the letter A, the bolts B preferably having their bearings in a ring B, usually integral with the plate.
In accordance with the present invention a circular protecting frame or door jamb is mounted on the inner side of the safe door, suchframe or jamb being preferably formed of superposed relatively thin steel bars O, O, bent and rabbeted into the bolt frame or ring B. Said plates are usually offset or one extended beyond the other at the edges so as to overlap the ring B at one edge and form the rabbet c for the glazed doors at the other edge. The inner plate or bar C may be extended sufficiently at suitable points, as at Specification of Letters Patent.

C for the reception of screws or bolts for holding the frame in place on the safe door.
A vertically arranged center mullion D is dovetailed into the circular frame O at top and bottom, and as an additional strengthening means angle irons I) connect the mullion and frame on the inner side at top and bottom.
'lhe supplemental or protecting doors are hinged at their proximate edges to the mullion and have semi-circular glass panels E, the stiles F being preferably cut from solid steel plates and fitted to seat in the rabbets c. The rear side F of the stiles F may be made in sections and a suitable packing G is interposed around the edge of the glass to protect the latter from breakage.
Any suitable catches or looks such as indicated at H may be employed to hold the protecting doors closed and the mullion may be braced at the center by a bolt or post I.
A supplemental or rotecting door construction such as descrlbed is dust tight and at the same time the entire bolt and lock work is exposed for observation without being accessible to unauthorized persons.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. The combination with a safe door having bolt work on its rear side, of a protecting frame formed of bars bent into shape and secured at one edge to the door, a mullion in said frame, and supplemental doors hinged at their proximate edges to said mullion and having glass panels through which the bolt and lock work may be observed.
2. In a structure such as described, the combination with the substantially circular frame constructed to be secured to the inner face of a safe door and having its edges rabbeted and a center mullion, of'the substantially semi-circular doors hinged at their proximate edges to the mullion, fitting the rabbeted edge of the frame and having glass panels, substantially as described.
3. In a structure such as described, the combination with the substantially circular frame constructed to be secured to the inner face of a safe door and formed of bars projecting beyond each other at the edges to form rabbets and a center mullion secured rigidly in said frame, of the substantially semi-circular doors hinged at their proximate edges totlie-m :llion,- fitting intlim at itlieirproximatesedges tethemvllion and rabbetededge of the frame and having-glasshaving glass panels, substantially as de- 1 panels, substantially as described. scribed.
4. The combination with a safe door hav- WILLIAM E. WILKINSON. 5 ing a ClIOI'lELIbOlt frame, 0f-a-circrlar-pr0- GEORGE-L MIHXIMERT.
