PETERS ca, Pncraumc.. WASH JNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES EYSTER, OF HOLOOMB, ILLINOIS.
SAFE OR VAULT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 623,145, dated April 18, 1899.
Application lecl April 11, 1898. Serial No. 677,264. No'model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, CHARLES EYsTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Holcomb, in the county of Ogle and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safe and Vault Protection, of which the following is a specication.
The object of this invention is to form a protection for safes and vaults in which the door of the safe or vault is connected to the door of the protection in order that in securing the safe or vault door in a closed position will also hold the door of the protection closed, the bolts and combination of the safe or vault door operated from the outside of the door of the protection except in instances where the time movement automatically moves the bolts.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a horizontal section of a safe and my irnproved protection in which the doors are closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view in which the doors are partially opened. Fig. 3 is a verti- Y cal section through the dial arrangement of the combination. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section through the dial connection of the protection-door. Fig. 5 is a horizontal section through the dial combination of the safe or vault door. Fig. 6 is a horizontal section through the link connection between the two doors, showing the construction of its connection with the safe or vault door. Fig. 7 is a vertical section through the link connection between the two doors, showing the const-ruction of its connection with the door of the protection.
The safe 1 represented in the drawings is of the ordinary construction, having the hinged door 2, a combination-knob 3, and a bolt-throwing lever 4.
The protection surrounding the safe consists of the bottom 5, sides v6,back 7, front S, top 9, and hinged door 10. The hinged door has an ordinary combination knob and dial 11 and bolt-throwing lever 12.
To the outer face of the safe-door 2 is secured a catch composed of the base-plate 13 and central stud 14, supported between the plates 15. The stud is located in a vertical position. To the inner face of the door to the protection is secured a bracket 16, pivotally -20,having a radial opening 21.
supporting a bar 17, having its free end 1S in hook form.
At Figs. 3, 4, and 5 I have shown an arrangement for forming aconnection between the dial of the safe and protection doors. The spindle 19 of the dial of the protection-door extends through the door and supports a knob The knob of the dial arrangement connected to the safedoor has a like radial opening 22. Link 23 has its ends 24 made .to conform to the surface of the knobs 3 and 2O and provided with studs 25, their free ends supporting springcatches 26. A similar link 27 forms a connection between the bolt-throwing levers 4 and 12 of the safe and protection doors. The pivotal points of the bar 17 and links 23 and 27 are the same distance from the faces of the doors as the hinged connection of the doors in order that both doors can swing while the bar and links are in connection with the doors, thus producing a parallel motion.
In connecting the bar with the safe-door both doors are opened sufliciently to allow the hooked end 1S of the bar 17 to surround the pin 14, as shown in solid lines, Fig. 6, and when the doors are closed the catch will have embraced the hooked end of the bar and will be in the position shown in dotted lines, Fig. 6, which prevents its disengagement while the doors are in their closed position, `thereby forming a connection between the-doors, so that when the safe-door is locked in its closed position the protection-door will also beheld closed.
After the connection is formed between the doors by the bar 17 the link 23 is placed in connection with the combination-knobs, as shown at Fig. 3. The spring-catches will prevent the disengagement of the link. A similar connection is formed by the link 27 between the bolt-throwing levers. tion-door is then closed, which will close the safe-door, and by means of the knob 12, through the link 27, the bolts of the safe are thrown, and by means ot the knob 11 the combination is thrown ott, thereby securely locking the safe and protection doors. The reverse movement of the operative parts will release the safedoor, when both doors can be opened, and if desirable the bar Vand link can The protecl IOO be disconnected from the safe-door, and during business hours the sate-door can be opened and closed independent of the protectiondoor.
The object of this protection is to form an air-space around the safe, which will be of great service in saving the contents of the safe in case of fire and will present an additional barrier to the operation of burglars, as it would be impossible for them to use explosives, as the protect-ion is not designed to have tight joints.
' It is evident that the same arrangement of connection between the'outer casing and vault-doors could be arranged.
In some arrangements of safe and vault doors a combination is not employed. A timemovement controls the operation ot' the bolts in such instances.
I claim as my inventionl. In a protection for safes and vaults, the combination of a safe or vault door, and a door of an outer casing having a connection through the medium ot' a pivoted bar, a boltthrowing knob for each door, a link connecting` the knobs, a combination-knob for each door and a link connecting the knobs.
In a protection for safes and vaults, the combination of a safe or vault door, and a door ot an outer casing, a bar having a pivotal connection with one of the doors and a detachable connection with the other door,
side the casing.
4:. ,In a protection for safes and Vaults, the combination of a safe or vault door and a door of an outer casing, a combination-dial for the safe or vault door, a corresponding dial connected with the outer casing, a rod connecting the dials and a connection between the doors through the medium of a pivoted bar whereby the combination of the safe or vault door is manipulated from outside the casing.
CHARLES EYSTER.
