WILFRED w. TREECE, or NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
DISPLAY-CASE.
To all whom it may concern: I
provide an improved display case of this character which exhibits all the various brands of cigars distinctively, whichfacilitates andincreases sales,-which allows customers to make their own selection from the contents of the cigar boxes, which prevents the handling of the cigars and boxes by salesmen, prevents breakage of the cigars, which is sanitary, effects .a saving of time, efiort and money, and which is extremely compact and occupies but minimum space. With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafterdescribed and claimed In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view of a display case constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same.
Figs. 3 and 4 are detailed sectional views of the same. 7
Fig. 5 is a detailed rear or inner elevation of one of the cover members.
Fig. 6 is a detailed rear elevation of the display case. 7
Fig. 7 is a detailed sectional view of one of the operating handles and its connections.
Fig. 8 is a detailed plan of the same.
The bottom of the display case is indicated at 1 and the end walls thereof at 2. The end walls are substantiallytriangular in form, presenting inclined front edges and vertical rear edges. The cover and front 4: of the display case is inclined as shown and embodies a series of cover members 5 each of which comprises a glazed frame, the said cover members being mounted in suitable guides 6 at the upper sides of the end walls 2 for slidable movement of said cover members so that any one of the cover members may be moved to open or closed position independently of the others. Belowthe respective slidably mounted cover members Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed February 28, 1917.
Patented Apr. 2, 1918. Serial No. 151,506.
are supports 7 for cigar boxes or the like, the said supports being here shown as shelves arranged in rearwardly suspending relation, stepwise, each shelf being to the rear of and arranged in a higher plane than the shelf next below. The supporting shelves are here shown as also provided with riser or back members 8 which serve to support the lids a in open position, when the cigar boxes are arranged on the shelves with their lids raised and open. 7
Each slidably mounted cover member affords access to the cigar boxes on the supporting shelf below said member and hence by moving any one of the cover members to open positionaccess may be afforded to the cigar boxes on the shelf associated with said cover member. Hence a customer may make his own selection of cigars from any box or of any brand and it is entirely unnecessary for the salesman to handle the cigar or boxes, and hence sales are greatly facilitated and expedited and the breaking of the cigars or damage thereto incident to handling is entirely eliminated.
Each cover member is provided on its under side near its end with racks 9. Associated with each slidable cover member is a shaft 10 which extends from end to end of the display case and is mounted in suitable bearings at the ends of the show case. Each shaft is provided with a pair of segment gears 11 the said gears engaging the rack elements 9. Each segment gear is provided with a rearwardly extending handle '12. The said handles enable the salesman to manually turn any of the shafts and the gears thereof to cause any desired cover member to be moved to open or closed posi tion.
The bolt is adapted to engage the keeper when the gears are turned by the handle in the required direction to close the cover member, and hence the bolt by engagement with the keeper serves to lock the cover member in closed position so that no cover member can be opened by an unauthorized person at the front of the display case. A spring 20 is associated with each bolt to move the latter to locking position and each bolt is provided at the outer end of its stem 21 with a handle 22. When the salesman grasps the handle 12 to open a cover member he can readily also grasp the handle 22 and move the latter toward the handle 12 and thus cause the locking bolt to disengage the Associated with each handle 12 is a latch 14, which is hinged at l l and which, when the handle is turned downwardly to open one of the cover members can be turned into engagement with the handle as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, to lock the handle and hence cause the said cover to be secured in open position.
The upper-most shelf or support 23 serves also to display cigars or other goods which can not be reached excepting from the back of the display case.
The back 1240f the display case is provided with a sliding door 25 and with a suitable lock 26 for said door.
While I have herein shown and described a preferred form of my invention I would have it understood that changes may be made in the form, proportion and construction of the several parts, without departing from the spirit of my invention and within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a display case of the class described, a series of supporting members arranged in rearwardly ascending relation step-wise independently movable, 'slidably mounted cover members for the respective supporting members arranged in inclined relation and 'to slide one above another and means to move said cover members to opener closed position. r
2. In a display case of the class described, a slidably mounted cover member, an operating member for said cover member arranged for oscillating movement, a keeper and a locking member carried by said operating member and adapted to engage said Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
