GARMENT HANGER Filed June 17, 1947 INVENTOR:

PEP
AT T OPNEY Patented Nov. 29, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE Application June 17, 1947, Serial No. 763,723 In Great Britain June 20, 1946 1 Claim.
This invention comprises improvements connected with garment hangers and has for its object to provide a simplified construction of hanger combined with a gripping member which is for use in holding skirts, trousers or other desired garments on the hanger, whilst at the same time the support for coats or like garments can be readily adjusted by bending to permit of the coat or like garment hanging correctly Without the risk of creases forming owing to incorrect support.
Referring to the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a garment hanger according to this invention.
Figure 2 is a section at A-B in Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a vertical section of the sheet metal suspension part.
In carrying the present invention into practice as shown upon the accompanying drawings, a support for the shoulders of a garment or the like is formed from a length of stout wire 4 which is bent to the configuration of the shoulders, the two ends of which are turned into the form of a hook 5 which are adapted to form hooks for the suspension of any suitable garments.
The garment support is preferably covered with rubber tubing or other suitable material 6.
In the centre of the beforementioned supporting member 4 is a sheet metal part I, which at its lower end 8 embraces the supporting member 4 and is rotatable thereon, whilst the upper part 9 of said supporting member 4 is formed to a tubular shape and. has rotatably mounted therein a hook H) for the suspension of the garment hanger, so it will be seen that for packing or storage the suspension hook II] can be folded down from its raised position, whilst at the same time the garment supporting member 4 will be permitted movement independent to that permitted to the supporting hook l0, thus permitting the garment supporting member 4 to accommodate its position to the hang of the garment positioned thereon.
Suspended and pivotally mounted on the support member 4 is a gripping member which is adapted to hold skirts, trousers or the like and is formed to a substantially truncated triangular shape and comprises two truncated triangularly shaped parts I I, I: which are located side by side. The two side parts of these truncated triangularly shaped members ll, [2 are disposed in relation to one another to form a slight taper, with an elongated ring or sleeve [4 surrounding each of the two parts M, 2, whilst the base E5 of the truncated triangularly shaped members I I, [2 are provided with a cylindrical part [6 thereon, which is covered with rubber tubing M.
It will be seen that anything positioned between the two lower parts 15 of the gripping member will be securely held in position, on the two elongated rings or sleeves l4 being drawn down the two side members I I, 12 thereof, thereby locking any garment between said gripping members I5.
I claim:
In a garment hanger comprising a support for the shoulders of a garment formed from a wire bent to the configuration of the shoulders, a clamping member comprising two truncated triangular parts pivotally mounted on the support, loops for embracing the adjacent sides of said clamping members for locking them in their clamping position, a member for suspending the support comprising a sheet metal part folded around the centre part of the support between the points of support of the clamping member which is pivotally mounted thereon, a tubular part formed parallel with that part of the sheet metal suspending member which surrounds the support, and a suspension hook having a headed part located within the tubular part of the suspension member and rotatable therein, said suspending member being pivotally mounted on the support and being capable of being folded down to lie between the two side parts of the clamping member, for packing.
