Description

' Nov. 14, 1939. AB. TAMMEN 2,180,263
GARMENT HANGER Filed May 10, 1937 ATTORNEYQ Patented Nov. 14, 1939 UNITED STATES ?!rs-1vr OFFiTCE for retaining and gripping the out? of trousers suspended from the hanger.
A further object is to provide a garment hanger whereby the trousers are suspendedby engagement of the cuff ends between a pair of clamping members, said members being so designed as to extend inwardly to form an added supporting feature.
The invention will be fully and comprehensively understood from a consideration of the following detailed description when read'in connection with the accompanying drawing which forms part of the application.
In the drawing:
Fig. l is a top plan view of one embodiment of the invention.
Fig. 2 is a side'elevational view illustrating the coat and trousers hanger in its preferred form.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional View taken substantially on line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is an end view of the hanger illustrated in Fig. 2, taken on line 44 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a front elevational view of a modified form of the invention.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view taken substantially on line 66 of Fig. 5.
Fig. '7 is a front elevational view of a second modified form of the invention; and
Fig. 8 is an end elevation of the hanger illustrated in Fig. 7.
Referring to the drawing for a more detailed description thereof, the hanger illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 comprises a pair of arms 10 and H for supporting the shoulder portions of a coat in the usual manner. By referring to Fig. 1 it will be noted that each arm l0 and H is formed of a single strip of wire or similar material forming looped portions l2 at the outer ends thereof and reduced looped portions 13 at the inner ends. The free ends of the wire are twisted or coiled at M. The looped portions 53 are swingably mounted by engagement in the loops l5 formed integral with the cross member It and within said member is a central loop i! from which extends a supending hook i 8. Referring to Fig. 2, it will be noted that the free ends of the member !6 are twisted about the depending members I 9 and the free ends 20 thereof bent for engagement with the reduced ends of the arms 10 and I I. When the ends 2d are in engagement with the reduced ends of the arms 10 and 1 I said arms are frictionally held in latched position but by exerting an upward pull on each of the arms the same are adapted to be readily disengaged for swinging upwardly, at which time they will pivot about the loops $5. The upward movement "of the arms it and H is occasionally necessary when positioning the trousers within their supporting means, to be later described. As aforeindicated, I a pair of arms M are suspended from the member iii and said arms support the-trousers hanger indicated generally by the numeral-2i. By referring to Fig. 4 it will be noted that the arms H! are substantially U-shaped and the free ends thereof support the trouserhanger 2|. The hanger 2! is preferably formed of two parts and includes ccmplemental frame members 22 and 23, said frame members being substantially rectangular shaped and having a plurality of transverse bars 24 forming a part; thereof. In the preferred. form of the in: vention the frame and bars are formed of wire and said bars may be attached to the frame by any desired means such as soldering or the like.
Referring to Fig. 4, it will be noted that the lower ends of the frames 22 and 23 are tapered as indicated at 25, and extending across the tapered ends are the transverse bars 26. When using the hanger 2! for supporting trousers, the same are suspended by the cuffs thereof and said cuffs are received within the enlarged area 2'! as defined by the cross bars 24. The reduced end 25 and transverse bars 26 engage beneath the edge of the cuff so as to doubly assure the retention of the trousers within the hanger. It will be readily noted that should the gripping of the trousers be reduced at the area 21, the reduced portion 25 and bars 26 will prevent the total dislodgment of the trousers from the hanger.
For locking the members 22 and 23 together there is provided on each of the U-shaped arms I9 a slidable ring 28 movable thereon to increase or decrease the tension of the membersin the usual manner of trouser hangers. A series of projections 29 are provided on the arms i9 for engagement with the ring 23 to retain the same in its adjusted position.
From the above description it will be readily apparent that there is provided a garment hanger adapted to support a coat and trousers thereon. The coat supporting arms are adapted to be swung upwardly when positioning :the trousers within its hanger 2|. After positioning the trousers the arms In and H are swung downwardly to support the coat and by means of the ends 20 said arms are frictionally held.
To accommodate the bulging seams in the cufis of trousers, the transverse bars 24 are pressed outwardly as indicated at in Fig. 3 of the drawing.
In Figs. 5 and 6 there is disposed a modified form of the invention which is directed particularly to a trouser hanger in which the supporting members are formed preferably of sheet metal. The complemental members 3| and 32 are of substantially the same size as the trouser cuffs and have attached thereto arms 33 which extend upwardly and converge into a suspending book 34. The members 3| and 32 are compressed by means of the ring 35 slidable on the arms 33 in the manner previously described. Referring to Fig. 6, it will be noted that the ends of the members 3| and 32 converge inwardly to conform to the shape of the cufis and the portions 36 will engage beneath the cufi to assure its support.
In Figs. 7 and 8 there is disclosed the second modified form of the invention in which the arms 3! extend downwardly thru the cuff-engaging portion 38 and are bent to form complemental members adapted to fit beneath the edge of the cuff of the trousers. As in the other forms of the invention, these loop-shaped ends 39 serve as a secondary means for supporting the trousers and to prevent the same from becoming totally dislodged even tho the clamps: 38 become loosened.
It is to be understood that this improvement is capable of extended application and is not confined to the exact showing of the drawing nor to the precise construction described and, therefore, such changes and modifications may be madetherein as do not affect the spirit of the invention nor exceed the scope thereof as expressed in the appended claims.
What is claimed as new is:
1. In a trousers hanger, suspension members movable toward and away from each other, a plurality of sets of cooperative clamping members carried by said suspension members respectively to clamp the cuff ends of trousers therebetween,
.one of said sets of clamping members having portions which engage beneath the cuffs, while the cuffs are pressed between another set of clamping members, to aid in supporting the trousers, and means which cooperates with said suspension members toretain all of said sets of clamping members in clamping engagement with the cuff ends.
2. In a trousers hanger, a plurality of sets of cooperative clamping members for clamping therebetween the cuff ends of trousers, a first set of members having an ofiset formation near the center thereof adapted to accommodate seam portions of said cuffs, and a second set of clamping members carried on said first set and having inwardly directed portions adapted to engage beneath the cuffs while said cuff ends are pressed between said first set of clamping-members, and means adapted to retain all of said sets of members in clamping engagement with said cufi ends.
