This invention relates :to spring-loaded rollers for combing machines and the like, which expression should be understood to include any textile or other machine using spring-loaded rollers.
Hitherto it has been usual to employ separate springs, with means for adjustment of their individual loadings at each end of the draw-off or feed rollers, but with such an arrangement it is possible, by uneven tightening of the rollers, to get very much more pressure at one end of the rollers than at the other. In the case of a Noble combing machine, to which this invention is particularly applicable, there is a leather apron which passes through the rollers and such uneven pressure causes uneven wear of this apron.
Devices are known which provide balanced pressure for each end o f the rollers, and the object of the present invention is an improved construction of spring loading for such rollers.
According to the invention, cranked levers are provided, each having one arm adapted to load one end of the roller and a single spring engaged with the other arms of the levers with means for adjusting the loading of such spring.

Fig. 1 is a sectional side elevation of a springloaded roller assembly embodying the present invention.
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is an end view of the left-hand part of the assembly in Fig. 1.
In the construction illustrated, there is a main bracket 5 with a base ange 6 and boss 1 tted with a bearing bush 8 which receives an extension 9 of one end spindle of the non-movable primary roller I0. Upstanding from the ange 6 is an arm I I having an extension I2 overhanging the boss "I, and drilled coaxially with the bearing bush 8 to receive rotatably the spigot I3 at one end of a U-shaped assembly consisting of end arms I4, I5 and an oli-set cross member I6. The arm I4 which has the spigot I3 thereon is formed with a quadrant I1 having an arcuate slot I8 through which a setscrew I9 extends whereby the arm I4 may be adjustably positioned and secured to the extension I2 of the mainA bracket 5. The end arms I4, I5 are both provided with bearing bushes 20 for the end spindles 2I of the primary roller I0 and each is slotted or U-shaped to form a guideway 22 which receives a slidable bearing block 23 having a bush 24 for the adjacent end spindle 25 of the movable or secondary roller 26. Each block 23 is located against endwise movement by a cross pin 21 in the arm I4 (or I5) and on one side has wings 28 carrying a cross pin 29 exposed in the guideway 22 of the arm. Pivotally mounted in each such guideway 22 is a bell-crank lever 30, one arm of which extends alongside the adjaent end spine die 25 of the roller 26 and bears on the cross pin 29 in the associated bearing block 23. The other arms of the bell-crank levers 30 are bifurcated and hook-shaped at 3| to receive the abutments 32, 33 of a spring-loaded assembly which may properly be termed a telescopic linkage, sineeit comprises a cylindrical casing 34 in which is mounted a piston 35 with a compression spring 36 behind the piston pushing the same into the cylinder 34. The abutment 32 takes the form of -a T head on a rod 31 extending yfrom the inner end of the cylinder, while a piston-rod 38 passing through a gland 39 at the outer end of the cylinder has a slidable collar 4U thereon which is shaped to provide the other abutment 33. The end of the piston-rod 38 is screw-threaded at 4I and carries a manually operable nut 42. Adjustment of the nut 42 along the piston rod 38 enables the loading of the spring 36 to be varied, which loading is equally divided between the two bellcrank levers 30 and transmitted thereby to the bearing blocks 23.
Instead of the assembly aforesaid, a single rod could be provided extending from one lever 30 and through and beyond the other and the spring 36 could be located on the extension of such rod, between the adjusting nut 42 and the adjacent lever 30, instead of between the two levers.
What I claim is:
1. In combination a primary roller, supporting means for said primary roller, a secondary roller co-operating with said primary roller, a pair of bell-crank levers pivotally mounted upon said supporting means with corresponding arms thereof acting upon opposite ends of said secondary roller, a single spring interposed between the other two arms of said bell-crank levers and operative to press said secondary roller against said primary roller, and means for adjusting the loading of said spring.
2. In combination, a primary roller, supporting means for said primary roller, a. secondary roller co-operating with said primary roller, bearings for the ends of said secondary roller slidably guided in said supporting means for movement in a common plane towards or away from the axis of said primary roller, a pair of bell-crank levers pivotally mounted upon said supportingV means with corresponding arms thereof acting one upon each of said bearings, a single spring interposed between the other two arms of said bell-crank levers and operative to press said secondary roller against said primary roller and means for adjusting the loading of said spring.
3. In combination, a primary roller, supporting means for' said)l primary roller, said supporting means including guideways extending transversely of the axis of said primary roller at opposite ends thereof, a secondary roller co-operating with said primary roller, bearings for the ends of said secondary roller slidable one in each of said guideways, a pair of bell-crank levers pivotally mounted one in each of said guideways and having corresponding arms thereof engaged with said bearings, a single spring disposed externally of said guideways and acting upon the other two arms of said bell-crank levers so as to press said secondary roller against said primary roller, and means for adjusting the loading of said spring. 4. In combination, a primary roller, supporting `means for said' primary roller, a secondary roller co-operating with said primary roller, a pairof bell-crank levers pivotally mounted upon said supporting means with corresponding arms thereof acting upon opposite ends of 'said secondary roller, a spring-loaded linkage connectingv the other two arms ofy said bell-crank levers and operative to press said secondary roller against said primary roller and means for varying the eiective length of said linkage by adjustment of the loading of its controlling spring.
5. In combination, a primary roller, supporting means for said primary roller, a secondary roller :zo-operating with said primary roller, bearings for the ends of said secondary roller slidably guided in said supporting means for movement in a common plane towards or away from the axis of said primary roller, a pair of bell-crank levers pivotally mounted upon said supporting means with corresponding arms thereof acting one upon each of said bearings, a telescopic link associated with the other two arms of said bell-crank levers, abutments on said link directly engaging one with each of said other arms, a spring adapted to maintain said link in contracted condition, and means for adjusting one of said abutments longitudinally of said link to vary the loading of said spring.
6. In combination, a primary roller, supporting means for said primary roller, said supporting means including guideways extending transversely of the axis of said primary roller at opposite ends thereof, a secondary roller co-operating with said primary roller, bearings for the ends of said secondary roller slidable one in each of said guideways, a pair of bell-crank levers pivotally mounted one in each of said guideways and having corresponding arms thereof engaged with said bearings, a cylinder pivotally associated at one end thereof with one of the other arms of said bell-crank levers externally of the adjacent guideway, a gland at the other end of said cylinder, a piston in said cylinder, a spring biassing said piston towards the inner end of said cylinder, a piston-rod extending through said spring and gland to the exterior of said cylinder, an abutment on the exposed portion of said piston rod engaging the second of said other bell-crank arms, and means for adjusting said abutment along said piston-rod to vary the loading of said spring.
