Wise Wood, New York, N. Y., assignor V vto Wood Newspaper Machinery Corporation, New York, N. Y., a corporation'of Virginia Application March 31 1928. Serial ,No. 266,229 f Renewed May 22, 71931 j a Claims. (01. 270-17) This invention relates to supporting means for the'folding rollers of a folding machine.
The principal objects 'of the invention are to provide an improved adjustable meansfor controlling the distance between the folding rollers to enable them to operate upon folded products of difierent thicknesses; to provide the two, folding rollers with means whereby, when a choke occurs, one of the rollers will automatically fall out of position, permitting the papers to be cleared out; and to provide this means in such form that the rollerscan be replaced very readily intheir original position withoutchanging their adjustment.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter. r r Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig.1 is an end view of a folding couple withbodiment of this invention; 1 i
Figs. 2 and 3 are diagrammatic end views showing the adjustment for products of different thicknesses; i
Fig. 4 is a plan of the supporting means for one end of the folding rollers; a Fig. 5 is a similar view showing the other end;

folder occur in the folding rolls. It is important, T
rectly supportedat eachend by'bracketsl l and V 14% which are pivoted :on studs 15 carried by the frame-160i ,the'machine. Each'bracket 14 and 1d carries at the side a pivot stud 17 on which is pivotally mounted a swinging bracket 18 which 9 isthe real support for the folding roller shaft. Each swinging bracket 18-is located. of course. on the inner side of the bracket 14 or 14% and.
carries ball-bearings for the end'of the folding roll shaft. p r Each'bracket 18 is normallyfixed tothe pivoted bracket 14 or .14 by a shear pin 19, and in ordi-' nary operation thes'e two brackets act as one. Each'bracket 14 and-14*. is provided with a stop pin 20, against which the bracket 18 engages 1,
' when it' drops down due to the shearing ofthe pin 19. This occurs when achoke-of paper exerts enough pressure on the folding roll to break the pins 'at both ends.
The pin 19 is held. in place by a set screw 21 and 7%.
can be taken out when broken, and replaced by a new one very readily to set the roll back in the position which it previously occupied. and without any change of the adjustment. o I
The folding rolls are driven by a gearr22 on the 9,. folding cylindershaftvmeshing with a gear 23 on the shaft of the folding roll 13. 7 On this shaft is a gear 24 which. in turn, meshes with a gear 24. of the same size on the shaft of the folding roll 12. 1
- The folding roll supports are made the same wayat both ends of each folding roll, and the same .way. but of the opposite hand,,at the ends of the'two rolls. The brackets 191 and 14 are provided with open-ended slots 25' "and'26 for're-i ceiving' studs 27 and 27 on a pair'of nuts 28;
Thesenuts receive' an-adjusting screw -29..which has a right and left hand thread. so that uporrturning the screw the rolls are moved toward or fromeach other. 951 Behind the bracket having the slot 26 is a spring 30 on'the': adjusting screw 29 held in position by a nut and check-nut 31 for holding the bracket 14 yieldingly against the stud: 27 inthe slot 26. The other .slot 25 is vertical and therefore posi- On each of the adjusting'screwsZQ is'an adjusting sleeve 32 threaded into a hole in the frame.
It; can be moved out and in, being providedwith 7-105 spanner holes 33 for that purpose, and with a check nut 34.
On the end of the" screwv 295is a dialf35 numbered in accordance with the conditionsexisting. and a stationary-zero point 36 is carried'by. the frame. This provides a reading to show how far 110 number of sheets. I
Of course it will be understood that the two ends 7 of both rollers should be adjusted alike ordinarily,
and for that reason each one of the two adjusting screws 29 is provided with a gear or toothed wheel 38. A shaft 39 extends across the machine having twoworms or gears 40 meshing with the gears 38, and when they are both turned alike will adjust the two screws 29 alike.
One of these worms is fixed to, the shaft 39 and the other is rotatable thereon but fixed to a sleeve 41. On the sleeve is a hand wheel 42 and on the shaft 39 is a hand wheel 4:3 Therefore these two hand wheels can be turnedtogether very conven-' iently or one of them turned separately the rolls. v g, m In this way it will be seen that when a choke occurs one of the shear pins will break. This allows the roll to fall down as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 6 and permits of clearing the papersaway from the folder without bendingthe folding roll'shafts or injuring any of the parts. When this is done, theroll is moved up to its normal position andthe shear pins replaced, all without any change-inthe adjustment of. the distance between the folding rolls.
Although I have illustrated and described only a single formofthe invention, I am aware-of the factthat changes canibe made therein by any personskill'ed in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as expressed in the claims. Therefore, I do. not wish to be limited to the exact form shown, but what I do claim is:( 1.
