The invention relates to mechanism used "n connection with printing presses forl fol-dino; the printed sheets before final delivery from the press, and it relates particularly to the foldingy or tucker blade and mechanism for adjustingthe sam-e.
The objects and advantages of the invention will be in part set forth inthe following specification and in part will be obviousy therefrom` without beingrv specially pointed out, the same being realized and attained by means of the instrumentalities and combinations pointed out in lthe claims hereof.
The invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement andcombi'nation of various elements and parts.` asset forth in the claims hereof, one embodiment of the ame being illustrated in the accompanying drawings and described in the Specification.

In printino presses of the kind to which this invention relates. there are supported in a suitable framework cuttingcylinders.v which are designated in the accompanying drawings 11 and 12 respectively,-which are mounted as usual on shafts 17 and 18. These cutting cylinders are provided with theusu'al cutting devices, indicated at 13, which operate to sever a web of paper 14. The cylinders are also provided with the usual paperengaging pins 15 and 16 and the operating devices therefor, and within the cylinder 12 are also provided a plurality of rotary tucking blades 19, located at suitably spaced Oints, mounted upon shafts 20 journaled in suitable bearings.A These shafts bear spur gears 21 which engage withran internally geared rack 22`r adjustably mounted on the frame ofthe machine so as to normally-remain stationary with regard tothe cylinder 12, but to be capable of a slight rotatorial adjustment for the purpose and by the means now to be described.
Secured to the upper portion of the rack 22 is a bracket 30. Secured to the Outer frame surrouriding` the rack 22 is a bracket 31. The operation of myv invention is as.fOl-' lows: Referring rmore particularly toy Fig. 1 of the drawings, the web 14 is shown leading down fromV the former, which is'located aboye but not shown in the drawings.- In the drawings the web is shown as having been carried down past'the'cutting knife and past the tuclring-in yblade y19, in order to illustrate the' Operation of the'fsame, but it will be understood that at the beginning of the operation the leading edge of the web is brought down and introduced between the rollers 11 and `12 and engaged by the pins 15. The leading edgeofthe web is then vdrawn around the rcylinder 11 in the direction of the arrow and when it has made a complete turn the knifemechanism 13 operaround the v'cylinder 11 but alsojthe leading edgejof, the following'portio'n of the web 14. There will then be two superimposed or associated sheets held by the vpins 16, and these associated sheets are carried on around the large cylinder until the tucking blade 19 pushes them in between the folding-off rollers 35 by which they are given the final fold and are passed on to the delivery belts.
When the paper is folded off between the rollers 35, they must of course be placed close enough together to 'grasp the paper and draw it away from the cylinder 12. When alrelatively small amount of paper is lbei folded, these rollers will necessarily ed, the folding-off rollers :must be adjusted considerably further apart, which is done by adjusting the screw 36 above described. It is obvious, however, that th-e path of the tucking blade 19 should pass eX-actly in the middle of the space between the two rollers, and hence when a large volume of paper is being folded and the folding-off rollers are separated by a larger space than is otherwise the case, the position of this blade 19 must be further to the left than when a` thin paper is being` folded, and one of the principal objects of my invention is to Aprovide means whereby this necessary adjustment can be made.
As the tucking blades are carried on shafts having bearings in the cylinder 12. which shafts are carried around as the cylinder rotates, and as these shafts bear gears which mesh with a relatively stationary internal gear 22, itis obvious that the position of the tucking blades with regard to the foldingoif rollers 35 depends upon the adjustment of the internal gear 22relative to the rotating cylinder 12, When it is desired therefore to cause theV downward or tiicking-in position of the blade 19 to take place at a different place, this is easily effected` in an apparatus constructed according to my invention, by slightly adjusting rotatorily the internal rack 22. For instance, if a large number of sheets are to be folded` the left hand folding-off roller 35 is moved slightly to the leftby the screw 36, thus increasing v the space between the iolls 35. The nuts 33 are then loosened, and the annular rack 22 rotated slightly but sutliciently for the purpose in a clockwise direction by means of the 'adjusting screw 32, until the parts are placed in such relative position that the tucking lade 19 stands in a. straight radial direction from the centre of the shaft 18 when it is half way between the folding ofi" rollers 35, whereupon the nuts on the adjusting screw 32 are tightened, and the nuts 33 which secure the annular rack 22 are also screwed down tight, and the operation of the machine proceeds as before, the only difference being that the tucking-in operation of the blade 19 between the folding-ofi' rollers 35 occurs at a slightly further advanced position of the roller 12 thanfis the case when but a few sheets of paper are being folded and the rollers 35 are consequently very near together.`
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent islas follows:
1. In folding mechanism for printing presses and the like, the combination with a suitable supporting frame and folding-"off rollers journaled therein, one of said rollers being adjustable toward and away from the' other; of a cylinder journaled in said frame adapted to convey paper to be folded to said folding-off rollers, a rotary tucking blade mounted in said last-named cylinder and adapted to tuck paper in between said folding-ottl rollers, andvmeans for rotating said tucking blade, comprising an internal gear adjustably securedto said frame, a spur gear adapted to engage with said internal gear and operatively connected to said tucking blade, and means adapted to adjust said internal rotatorially with relation t0 said folding-olf rollers. In folding mechanism for printing presses and the like, the combination with a suitable support-ing frame and folding-off rollers journaled therein, one of said rollers being adjustable toward and away from the other; of a cylinder journaled in said frame adapted to convey paper to be folded to said folding-oit rollers, a rotary tucking blade mounted in said last-named cylinder and adapted to tuck paper in between said fold.-

3. In folding mechanism for printing presses and the like, the combination with a suitable supporting frame and folding-ottl rollers journaled therein, one of said rollers being adjustable toward and away from the other; of a cylinder journaled in said frame adapted to convey paper to be folded to said folding-oft1 rollers, a rotary tucking blade mounted in said last-named cylinder` and adapted to tuck paper in between said folding-ofi1 rollers, and means for rotating said blade, comprising'an internal gear rotatably secured to said frame, means for adjusting the same with relation to said frame, means for securing said internal gear fast on said frame when adjusted at a predetermined position, and a spur gear adapted to engage with said internal gear and operatively connected t-o said tucking blade: said internal gea-r adjusting means comprising a bracket on said internal gear and movable with the same, a second bracket independent ot said internal gear and stationary, and an adjusting screw passing through said brackets and adapted when` rotated to draw said brackets nearer together or impel same further apart.
