UNITED STATES FRANK PLATT, 0F OLDHAM, ENGLAND,
ASSIGNOR TO ASA LEES AND COMPANY i LIMITED, OF OLDHAM, LANCASTER, ENGLAND.
MACHINE FOR CARDING COTTON AND OTHER FIBERS.
Application filed February 26, 1924. Serial No. 695,163.
To all whom "it may concern: c
Be it known that I, FRANK PLATT, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at 27 Osmond Street, Oldham, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Machines for Carding Cotton and Other Fibers, of which the following is a specifica tion.
The invention relates to improvements in or relating to machines for carding cotton and other fibers and has ion its object to provide improved means for mounting the undercasings of the cylinder and the tak r-in roller in such machines, whereby said undercasings may be adjusted as the wire on the cylinder is worn down and when set it close up to the nip or point of contact of the cylinder and the taker-in roller.
The invention also comprises means for holding the undercasing of the taker-in roller so that the nose of said undercasing can be set relatively to the taker-in roller with-- out altering the adjustment at the back part of the undercasing also said under-casing can, if desired, be removed without disturbing the lap.
Further, improved means are provided for mounting the mote knives and adjusting same so that either or both of said mote knives may be in operation simultaneously.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side view, partly in section, of the takerin mechanism of a carding engine showing the method of attachment of the undercasings in accordance with the presentinvention.
Figure 2 is a plan of part thereof having the taker-in roller removed, and
Figure 8 is a side elevation of the adjustable bracket carrying the cylinder unden casing.
Referring to the drawingsl represents the cylinder, 2 the taker-in roller which rotates in bearings 3, 4 represents the cylinder undercasing and 5 the taker-in roller undercasing, both of said under-casings being a-djustably mounted at 6 and 7 to the side plate 8 to which also are adjustably attached the mote knives 9 and 10 at 9 and 10*. c
The side plate 8 is provided with a lug or bracket or its equivalent 8 by which it is attached to the taker-in roller pedestal 3* by a bolt or equivalent 11.
The taker-in roller undercasing 5 is so constructed and attached to the side plate 8 that the nose 5 may be lowered away from the taker-in roller 2 without altering the relative position at 5", also this construction allows the whole undercasing 5 to be removed without necessitating the disturbance oi the cylinder undercasing 4, the taker-in roller 2 or its pedestal 3 Vi hen the wire l on the cylinder 1 becomes so worn by grinding that adjustment of the taker-in roller 2 is necessary, it will be understood that by altering the setting oi the taker-in roller pedestal 8 to the desired position, the cylinder undercasing 4,, the taker-in roller undercasing 5 and the mote knives 9 and 10 are automatically adjusted into their correct positions for the new setting of the taker-in roller 2.
In Figure 3 is illustrated the means of attaching the cylinder undercasing 4 to the frame 12 of the machine which consists of a bracket 13 and the setting of said cylinder undercasing 4 is accomplished by releasing the clip 6 l) and adjusting the set screw 14, the cylinder undercasing -l pivoting about the clip 6 into the desired position.
It will be understood that the details of construction of the device may be modified withoutdeparting from the principle of the invention.
Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a carding machine, the combination of a cylinder, a pedestal mounted for adjustment relatively to said cylinder, a taker-in roller mounted for rotation in said pedestal, a plate secured to said pedestal and movable therewith, a cylinder undercasing, a taker-in roller undercasing and a pair of mote knives all independently adjustably secured to said plate for movement therewith, whereby said members are automatically and simultaneously adjusted relatively to the cylinder and taker-in roller when said pedestal is adjusted.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
