L. M. MONTOYA HIGH-CHAIR TRAY ATTACHMENT Filed Dec. 8, 1945 Inventor zau/sflMo/vroyfl A tto meys Patented Oct. 25, 1949 UNITED STATES PTENT @PFICE 1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in high chair tray attachments, and more particularly to a guard rail or frame adapted to be clamped onto a high chair tray to prevent the dishes placed on the tray from being pushed off of the tray by an infant when sitting in the high chair while eating its meals.
An object of my invention is to provide an improved guard rail or frame adapted to be clamped about the outer edge of a high chair tray at feeding time, so that an infant will be less'liable to pushor knock the dishes from its tray, also the guard or frame may be equally well employed to assist in keeping a childs toys on the tray while he is playing.
A further object of my invention is to provide a highly efiicient and relatively inexpensive high chair tray guard rail or frame which may be quickly and easily placed on a high chair tray when desired, and which may be just as quickly and easily removed when its use is no longer needed.
Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of my application,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a high chair showing my improved tray guard rail or frame in position thereon;
Figure 2 is a top plan view of my improved tray guard rail or frame in position on the tray, and
Figure 3 is a partial sectional view taken on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Like characters of reference are used throughout the following specification and the accompanying drawings to designate corresponding parts.
In carrying out my invention, I provide any suitable high chair I provided with the usual tray 2 which is pivoted at 3 between the side arms 4 of the chair and extends forwardly therefrom.
I have illustrated my improved tray guard rail or frame 5 as having five sides 6, I, 8, 9 and I0, although it may be made in one integral piece if desired, and in any suitable shape to fit the desired high chair tray. The five sides are secured together by means of the angular metal braces I I which are fastened to the side members by means of the screws I2.
For holding the guard rail or frame 5 upon the high chair tray 2, I employ three similarly constructed clamps secured to the opposite sides and to the outer end of the frame 5. Each clamp comprises a bracket member secured by the screws I3 to the outer surface of the sections, as clearly illustrated in Figures 1 and 3 of the drawings, and extends outwardly and downwardly and finally is bent inwardly as at I4 to engage the under surface of the tray 2. Each clamp is fur- 6O ther provided with the clamping aw I5 wh1ch 1s adapted to clamp over the head I6 of the tray 2,
and is bent downwardly as at H to contact the upper surface of the portion M of the clamp. A headed and threaded bolt I8 extends through the jaw body I5 and through the inwardly bent portion I4 of the bracket member, and is adapted to receive the wing nut ill on its'lower end. A coil spring 20 is placed over the bolt I8 between the parts It and I5 to facilitate the opening of the clamp when the wing nut I9 is unloosened. Cotter pins 2i will be passed through aligned openings in the bracket member, the clamping jaws and the inwardly extending portions I l of the bracket members and will be spread open to hold them in place and to prevent lateral movement between the bracket members and the clamping aws,
From the foregoing description it will be seen that it is only a simple matter to secure the guard rail or frame to the high chair tray by tightening up on the wing nuts I9. Conversely, it is only necessary to unloosen the three wing nuts I9 to quickly remove the guard rail or frame from the tray.
Many minor changes in detail of construction may be resorted to without departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
In a high chair having a tray and a guard rail for the tray; a clamping means for removably retaining the guard rail on the tray comprising a plurality of brackets secured at their upper ends to the guard rail, inwardly bent extensions at the lower ends of said brackets and adapted to engage the lower face of the tray, clamping jaws overlying said extensions and adapted to engage the upper face of the tray, resilient means for holding said clamping jaws and extensions apart, and removable locking pins extending through said brackets, clamping jaws and extensions to prevent lateral movement between said brackets and said clamping jaws.
LOUIS N. MONTOYA.
