F. J. WERTZ CHILDRENS AND GIRLS PANTS Filed Dec. 23, 1947 INVENTOR. T1 Jean 778112;,
Patented Oct. 11, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE CHILDRENS AND GIRLS PANTS Flo Jean Wertz, Washington, D. 0. Application December 23, 1947, Serial No. 793,341 2 Claims. (01. 2224) This invention relates to apparel, and has particular reference to improvements in childrens and girls pants or so-called shorts.
A serious fault with prior childrens and girls pants is that they are not formed to afford requisite give in the crotch commensurate with proper fit, with the result that they soon rip and tear at this point. Moreover, the design of most prior childrens and girls pants is such that they cannot be cut and assembled from only two main pieces of material, but must be made up of four main pieces of material; i. e., separate front and back pieces for each of the two right and left half sections of the pants.
Accordingly, one special and important object of the present invention is to provide childrens and girls pants or shorts which are so designed as to afford, commensurate with proper fit, requisite give at and in the vicinity of the crotch to practically eliminate ripping and tearing at the crotch or in the vicinity thereof.
Another special and important object of the invention is to provide childrens and. girls pants or shorts which not only possess, commensurate with proper fit, ample give at and in ithe vicinity of the crotch, but which advantageously may be composed of only two main pieces of material; viz., one for each of the two right and left half sections of the pants.
With the foregoing objects in view, the inven- :w'
tion consists in childrens and girls pants or shorts embodying the novel features of construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings and as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the different views:
Fig. 1 is an elevation of a pair of shorts" constructed in accordance with the invention; and
Fig. 2 is a plan View showing in full lines the manner of cutting a single folded piece of material to provide the duplicate front and back portions of one of the present pants half sections, and in dotted lines one of said portions unfolded from the other.
Referring to the drawings in detail, it will be observed that a pair of childrens or girls pants or shorts constructed in accordance with the present invention are composed, as usual, of a waist portion, designated as It, and leg portions designated as I I, II. It will further be observed that said waist and leg portions are composed of duplicate, right and left pants half sections which, as usual, are stitched together along the median line of the pants; 1. e., along the crotch l2 and along the front and back of the waist portion In. I
As illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, each of the two main right and left sections of the pants i cut from a single, folded piece of material and is composed of duplicate, front and back, upper or waist portions l0, l0 and duplicate, front and back, lower or leg portions H, H. The fold line of the piece of material is designated as it and is located at the outer side of the half section. It extends parallel, or substantially parallel, to one set of the threads of the material; 1. e., either the warp or the weft threads. Likewise, the inner edges 14 of the leg portions II, M extend parallel, or substantially parallel, to the same set of threads of the material as the fold line l3. On the other hand, the inner edges l5 of the waist portions it, it are cut on a downwardly and inwardly extending bias beginning at or near their tops and progressively increasing downwardly to the tops of the inner edges of the leg sections H, H, becoming accelerated as the tops of the leg sections are approached.
Following cutting of the two right and left pants half sections as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the inner edges of the leg portions H, l l of each half section are stitched together and the bottoms of said leg portions are hemmed or otherwise finished as desired. The two half sections then are stitched together along their mating bias'cut inner edges and thereafter the waist portion it of the pants is hemmed or otherwise finished at its top as desired.
Because of the mating, stitched together inner edges of the pants half sections being cut on a progressively increasing downward and inward bias from, or substantially from, the tops of the waist portions of said sections to the tops of the inner edges of the leg portions of said sections, with the increase becoming accelerated as the tops of the leg portions are approached, crotch fullness is afforded commensurate with proper fit of the pants without undesirable excess material in the crotch. At the same time, any tension set up in the material of the pants at or in the vicinity of the crotch thereof, due to spreading of the legs of the pants, obviously will be in directions diagonal with respect to the threads of the material with consequent ample give or stretching of the material to permit free spreading of the legs without rupture of the pants at or in the vicinity of their crotch. Moreover to further insure against rupture of the pants at or in the vicinity of their crotch, the distance between the top or Waist band portion of the pants and the junction of the inner edges of the leg portions II, I I with the inner edges of the waist portions H1, H1, or, in other words, the distance between the waist band portion and the crotch of the pants, is made approximately equal to the distance between the waist and the crotch of the person which the pants are designed to fit. The
crotch of the pants thus is high and more or less closely fits the crotch of the wearer of the pants so that upon spreading of the legs of the wearer of the pants the pants legs hinge approximately in the crotch of the wearer of the pants and there is avoided any pull and consequent tendency of the pants to tear or rupture in their crotch as is commonly the case with prior pants the design of which is such that the crotch thereof is spaced more or less below the crotch of the wearer of the same.
While each half section of the present pants preferably is formed advantageously from a single folded piece of material, it may, less advantageously, but if desired, be formed from separate front and back pieces of material.
Pants formed in accordance with the invention have been found to possess, commensurate with proper fit and without excess of material in the crotch, exceptionally long life without splitting at or in the vicinity of the crotch.
I claim:
1. A pair of childrens or girls pants comprising duplicate right and left half-sections each composed of substantially duplicate front and back waist portions and duplicate front and back leg portions, each half-section being formed from a single piece of material folded upon itself along a straight medial vertical line to dispose the waist portions and the leg portions thereof into registering overlying relationship to each other, respectively, -said fold line extending substantially parallel to a set of the threads of the material, the inner edges of the leg portions of each halfsection being substantially straight and being disposed substantially parallel to the fold line of the half-section and being stitched together, the inner edges of the front and the back waist portions of the half-sections being cut on a bias with respect to the threads of the material and extending downwardly and inwardly on duplicate progressively increasing curves to the tops of the inner edges of the front and the back leg portions, respectively, of the half-sections, the inner edges of the back waist portions of the respective half-sections being stitched together and the inner edges of the front waist portions of the respective halfsections being stitched together to form the waist and the crotch portions of the pants, and the distance between the tops of the waist portions and the junctions of the inner edges of the leg portions with the inner edges of the waist portions of the half -sections being substantially equal to the distance between the waist and the crotch of the person which the pants are designed to fit.
2. A pair of children's or girls pants comprising duplicate right and left half-sections each composed of substantially duplicate front and back waist portions and duplicate front and back leg portions, the outer edges of the front and back waist and leg portions of each half-section being joined together along a substantially straight line extending substantially parallel to one set of the threads of the material from which the halfsection is formed, the inner edges of the leg portions of each half-section being substantially straight and being disposed substantially parallel to the outer edges of the waist and the leg portions of the half-section and being joined together, the inner edges of the front and the back waist portions of the half-sections being cut on: a bias with respect to the threads of the materialof said half-sections and extending downwardly and inwardly on duplicate progressively increasing curves to the tops of the inner edges of the front and back leg portions, respectively, of the halfsections, the inner edges of th back waist portions of the respective half-sections being joined together and the inner edges of the front waist portions of the respective sections being joined together to form the waist and the crotch portions of the pants, and the distance between the tops of the waist portions and the junctions of the inner edges of the leg portions with the inner edges of the waist portions of the half-sections being substantially equal to the distance between the waist and the crotch of the person which the pants are designed to fit.
