CHARLES E. BAILEY AND WILLIAM R. TALBOT, OF PROVIDENCE, R. I.
ORNAMENTAL-HEADED NAIL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,269, dated October 18, 1881.
Applicationfiled April 25, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES E. BAILEY and WILLIAMB. TALBOT, citizens ofthe United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ornamental Heads for Nails; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghadtotheaccompanyingdrawings, andto the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in ornamental heads or buttons for nails, tacks, screws, and other articles of a kindred nature; and it consists, essentially, of a head or button formed of sole-leather, pressed into shape by suitable dies, and stained with transparent colors to resemble various kinds of natural wood, or colored to match upholstered furniture, said heads being connected to the nails or tacks, all as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of our improvement, and Fig. 2 a vertical section of the same.
Similarletters of reference indicate like parts in both figures.
Referring to the drawings, Arepresents the head or button, which is formed ofsole-leather, stained with transparent colors to suit, and
.part of said head A during the process of manufacture.
In the operation of forming the complete device the solt texture of the leather head is compressed around the head of the nail by great pressure, the finished leather head presenting a hard, compact, and solid body, capable of taking a high polish.
The advantages of our invention are such that the nails thusformed can be readily driven into place without liability of the head being split, chipped, or broken, thereby remedying a serious defect which occurs in all other devices used for a similar purpose. We are also enabled toproduce a neater and cheaper article, combined with great strength and durability.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and useful is- As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described ornamental nail, con sistin g of the compressed-leather head A, stained in suitable colors, and provided with the nail B, substantiallyas specified.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES E. BAILEY. WILLIAM B. TALBOT. Witnesses:
