JJA. MOK. BOUVIER. FASTENING FOR HATS AND BONNETS. No. 248,251. I Patented Oct. 11,1881..
WITNESSES: INVENTOR:
I I 1 M565 n PETERS. Phololiliwgnpher. Walkinglon. ac.
UNITED I STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPHINE A. MCK. BOUVIER, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
FASTENING FOR HATS AND BONNETS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,251, dated October 11, 1881.
' Application filed August 2, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Beitknown that I,'JosE1 HINE AnELa MoK. BOUVIER, of Denver, in the county of Arapahoc and State of Colorado have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fastenings for Hats and Bonnets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to fasteuings for securing hats and bonncts upon the head; and it has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive fastener, which shall be adapted for being secured in position without the use of needle and thread.
The invention consists in a button of peculiar construction, as hereinafter described.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a bonnet with the fastener attached thereto; Fig. 2, a perspective view, and Figs. 3
and 4, respectively, aplan and a section of the button.
The fastening for hats and bonnetswhich is chiefly used at the present time consists of two elastic cords which are sewed to a hat on opposite sides, and adapted to engage with each other by means of a loop in one and a button which is sewed to the other. Sewing the elastic cord, however, renders it liable to break, and more or less repairing is thus necessitated. Besides, in large millinery-establishments, the time required for attaching elastic and buttons to bats and bonnets by meansof thread is an item of considerable expense, and the reduc tion of this expense by an improved method, which willadd to the convenience of those who buy as well as those who sell, is particularly desirable.
The button a, which is to be made of any desirable material and in any convenient form,
is constructed with a suitable opening, 6, formed in the back thereof, and leading to the cavity f, which is designed to receive the knotted end of an elastic cord. 0. The back g of the button is provided with a circular smooth-edged perforation, h, of suitable size for accommodating the cord, and a narrow slot, i, leading from the said perforation to the opening e, through which the cord is forcibly passed to the perforation after the knotted end is inserted into the said cavity. The end of the cord opposite to that to which-the button is attached is to be provided with a knot and secured to one side of a hat or bonnet by means of a suitable clasp which shall engage with the cord and hold the same by the knot when the latter is drawn against it. A looped cord, secured in like manner to the oppositeside of a hat, is to be placed in engagement with the button, in the usual manner, to hold the hat upon the head.
It will readily appear that the button above described is adapted for use not only upon hats and bonnets, but in any analogous situation,
and that my method of attaching a button by means of a knotted cord may be variously modified without departingfrom the principle herein set forth.
Having thus described my'invention, what I claim is- A button having a portion of its back cut away to form an opening. and the remaining portion of said back provided with a key-hole slot which communicates with said opening and is adaptedto receive a knotted cord, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
JOSEPHINE ADELE MCK. BOUVIER.
