AUGUSTUS H. VVARNER,OF BRISTOL, CONNECTICUT.
LANTERN-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming lpart of Letters Patent No. 247,860, dated October 4, 1881. Application filed December 13,1880. (Model.)
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS H. WARNER,
of Bristol, in the county ot' Hartford and State y of Connecticut, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Lantern-Holders; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference' duration havesbeen open to the objection of rattling disagreeabl y when the vehicle to which they areattached is in motion. Again, some devices ldesigned for this use have assumed the form of depending cages, while others have had depending arms and clamps extending down forsome distance on the body of the lantern. These latter devices have not only been found to be cumbrous in use, but are unsightly in appearance. r
In view, then, of the existing state of the art, the objects of my invention are to produce a lantern-holder of extremely simple construction, and hence capable of beingprodnced and supplied to the trade at aslightinitial cost, and one which when attached to a vehicle is entirely out of sight and annoyance.
With these objects in view my invention consists in a lantern-holder embodying'certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will hereinafter be described and shown.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view of my lantern-holder with a lantern secured in position therein. Fig. 2 is a detached perspective view ofalan tern-holderconstructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 3 is a view in longitudinal cross-section thereof.
Let A represent a brackebplate of any desired form of construction, and adapted by means of apertures a to be secured underneath the body of a vehicle. Bracket A is also provided with a blade-shaped depending arm, B, which may be attached thereto, but is preferably cast integral therewith.
Resilient jaws G are riveted at each side of jaws, and thereby extra `stead ot the central tube.
is attained, consistsin a seinicircular recess, a',
in each ofthe jaws, and ot" an outwardly-flaring lip, a2. When, now, the t'wojaws are `riveted. to the opposite faces of the bladeshaped depending arm B in such position that the convex faces of the semicircular recesses a are eX- posed, a cylindrical socket to receive the lantern-tubes willbe formed, admission for the tube into the socket being obtained through a wedge-sh aped and resilient en trance formed by the conjunction of the two aring lips of the jaws.
The practical application of my improvement is'too simple and apparent to need further explanation than is furnished by the drawings, Fig. l of which shows a lantern supported by my form of holder.
- The resilient jaws, in addition to the leverage obtained on the center tube of the lantern by their width, are designed to be made of once in position it will be a practical impossi bility for the lantern to work itself free. under face of the upper cross-tube of the lantern has bearing on the upper edges of the two support is afforded therefor.
I have shown and described the holder as clasping the center tube of the lantern. However, it is apparent that if any advantage would result two holders of the form described might be placed side by side and adapted to clasp each of the outside tubes of a lantern in- It is also apparent that I should not violate the spirit of my invention by forming a bracket with two depending blade-shaped arms, and providing them The with resilient jaws to operate as just above dev IOO been intended or adapted for the purpose oi retaining a lantern in place. A lanternholder must be constructed and arranged not only to support the lantern, but to hold it rigidly and prevent it from swaying or swinging to and fro when the vehicleis passing over rough and uneven roads. To eect these results, I provide a bracket which is adapted to be flrmly secured to the under side ot' the wagon-body, and to a depending arm or lug of the bracket I rivet the ends ot' two wide and sti springmetaljaws, each of which is provided near its free end with a seniicircular recess and with outwardly-Eating ends. The central tube of the lantern being inserted between the wide spring-nietaljaws, is retained within the semicircular recesses in su id jaws, whereby the latter serve t0 not only support the lantern, but, by reason of theextended beari ng ot'thesprin gmetal jaws on the tube ot' the lantern, serve to prevent the latter from swinging when suspended beneath a vehiclebody.
Having fully described my invention, hat
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Alanternholdcrconsistingot'abracket-plate adapted to be secured to the under side of a wagon-body, said plate having a depending lng or blade cast integral therewith, in combination with the two wide, at metal spring-jaws C C, which are riveted at one end to the lower end ot' the bracketlug or blade, and arranged parallel to the bracket-plate, the free ends ot' said jaws being formed with an elongated socket for grasping the central tube of the lantern and supporting the same, and also preventing the lantern from swinging while in use7 substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoingl have hereunto set my hand this 8th day of December, 1880.
A U GUSTUS H. WARNER.
