This inventionV relates 'to clothesline' holders and has for its object 'to simplifythe structure, and to provide a devicefor securely holding the holder in its inmost and outermost position.

The invention consists in the locking guide member for the holder, on the upper bracket, consisting of a U-shaped enclosure having a central hole at its bottom, for holding the horizontal portion of the rod of which the holder is constructed in its inner or outer position, the horizontal portion being raised from the U cavity to ride on the upper edge of the guide member while passing from one to the other position. The invention combines therewith a lower bracket and a coiled terminal portion on the lower end of the rod, to hold the line passing through the terminal.

The invention will be more fully described hereinafter, embodiments thereof shown in the drawings, and the invention will be nally pointed out in the claim.

Referring to the drawings, the clothesline I is supported on two pulleys, one of which II is shown, other being on the usual pole (not shown). The frame I2 ,of the pulley II engages a hook shaped portion of a rod I3 extending inwardly of the room, which rod I3 has a bent corner I4 and then extends vertically downwardly, and is bent into a curved terminal portion I5, permitting the line .or rope I0 to easily enter, be held therein, and be removed therefrom.

The window frame I6 supports by suitable bolts two brackets I8 and I9, vertically spaced from each other. The lower bracket I9, in the form shown, is a flat bar, twisted at its central portion, to enable one end to be parallel with the plane of the window frame and the other to be in a horizontal plane. This end 20 has an opening 2l, for the passage of the vertical portion of the rod I3, in sliding engagement therewith.

The terminal portion I is spaced from this end to permit the upward movement of the vertical portion of the rod I3, a certain distance.

The improvement consists in the structure of the'upper bracketjIB. This, in the form shown,

has a flat portion 23, in a vertical plane to enable' it'to be fastened to'the window'frame. 'Ihis'bar is then twisted as at 24, to form a horizontal platform 25. To this platform 25, there is secured by bolts I8a, a U-shaped guide member 26 having a rearward extension through which and through the platform 25, fastening bolts I8a pass. The bottom of the U has a hole 28 slightly larger in diameter than the diameter of the rod. When the pulley II is within the room, the horizontal part of the rod I3 rests in the U at the inner side of the guide member 26. The upper part of the line or rope II passes between the vertical part of the rod I3 and the window frame I6, and remains in the same relation when the pulley I I is swung 'to its extreme outer position as shown in Fig. 5. The lower part of the line or rope I0 is free of the terminal I5 to enable the user to apply by means of clothespins the garments to be dried and then move them outwards, the pulley I I being in its inward position. When a suflicient number of garments have been applied, and it is desired to close the window, the horizontal portion I3a of the rod I3 is raised until the bent corner portion rests on the guiding member, the rod I3 being moved on the pivot formed by the rod I3 passing through the hole 28, and the horizontal portion I3a rides on the upper edge 26a of the guide member until the extreme .outer part of the upper edge .26a is reached when the horizontal portion of the rod I3 drops into the U again and is locked thereby. Prior to moving the pulley I I from its inmost position, the user passes the line or rope I0 into the terminal I5, and by the outward movement of the pulley II, the lower part .of the line is doubled on itself being bent at the terminal I5, as shown in Fig. 5.

The distance between the terminal and the lower bracket is determined by the amount of the distance corresponding to the required raising of the rod I3 from its U to the rupper `edge 26a.

When the garments are dried, the pulley II" is moved from its outermost position to its innermost position, and the lower line is disengaged from the terminal I5. To so move the pulley, it is necessary to slightly raise the horizontal 13a until it rides on the upper edge, and until it drops into the U at its innermost end.

By the arrangement of the U-shaped guiding member 26 with the rod I3 passi-ng through its opening 28, a very simple but very secure holding member is provided, which cooperates with the terminal to hold the line securely. By the mere raising of the rod I3, it may be moved to either inward or outward position.

I have described several forms of my invention, but obviously various changes may Ibe made in the details disclosed without departing from the spirit of the invention as set out in the following claim.

I claim:
