1 Claim. 1 This invention relates to a clip for carrying cartridges, and is more particularly designed for hunters use to carry shot gun shells.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a clip for supporting shells in which the shells can be rapidly inserted and removed.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the clip that it can be quickly and easily applied to any belt without the use of elaborate tools or machinery.
Other objects and advantages reside in the detail construction of the invention, which is designed for simplicity, economy, and eificiency. These will become more apparent from the following description.
In the following detailed description of the invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing which forms a part hereof. Like numerals refer to like parts in all views of the drawing and throughout the description.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary side view of a carrying belt on which the improved clip is supported, illustrating shot gun shells in place therein;
Fig. 2 is a front view of the shell clip employed on a belt;
Fig. 3 is a side view of the improved clip;
Fig. 4 is a rear view;
Fig. 5 is a top view thereof; and
Fig. 6 illustrates the metal blank from which the clip is formed.
In the drawing, a belt is illustrated at l formed of leather, canvas, or other suitable flexible material. Typical shot gun shells of the type having a flanged cap extremity M are indicated at I2.
The improved clip is formed from a single blank of resilient sheet metal, such as spring steel, brass, or bronze, stamped, as shown in Fig. 6, to form a vertical back plate portion l3, two side Wing portions IS, an upper pair of prongs IS, a lower pair of prongs l1, and a neck portion l8.
The back plate l3 and the wing portions l5 are formed on a cylindrical radius slightly smaller than the radius of the shells l2. The prongs l6 and I! are turned to project rearwardly in parallel relation. The neck portion I8 is arcuately indented to form a cap-receiving groove [9. The
2 adjacent edges of the wings are rolled outwardly, as indicated at 20.
The device is applied to the belt II by punching four slotted holes at each position where it is desired to place a shell. The prongs i6 and I! are passed through the holes and bent so that the prongs of each pair face each other with their points turned into the material of the belt II.
The cartridges l2 are inserted by simply fitting their shot extremities between the flared portions 20 of the wings l5 and forcing the shell downwardly until the cap portion of the shell aligns with the groove 19. The shell is then released and the inherent resiliency of the wing portions l5 snaps the edge of the cap into the groove 19, securely retaining the shell in place.
The shells can be quickly and easily removed by simply gripping the cap extremities and pulling them outwardly from the groove I9 and from the resilient grip of the wing portions l5.
While a specific form of the improvement has been described and illustrated herein, it is desired to be understood that the same may be varied, within the scope of the appended claim, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired secured by Letters Patent is:
A clip for supporting a shot gun shell of the type having a flanged cap extremity, comprising: a backing plate; two resilient, inwardly facing, arcuate wings projecting from said backing plate and adapted to grip a shell thereagainst; and a relatively narrow neck portion extending upwardly from said backing plate above the upper edges of said wings and having an indented groove in its forward face for receiving the flanged extremity of a shell.
