Application August 22, 1947, Serial No. 770,036
2 Claims. 1
My invention relates to a collapsible hanger adapted for supporting wearing apparel such as shirts, skirts, etc. The hanger herein to be described is especially useful for those who travel, since it may be reduced to very small size for storage in a very small space.
The present hanger is simple in the extreme, and also inexpensive to produce. It comprises essentially an endless band of spring metal, together with a strap which is extended laterally therefrom, the band being manipulable to provide a hanger of figure 3 form with the strap serving as a pendant whereby the hanger may be suspended from any convenient hook or other support. The hanger is collapsible into different forms, one being a circular band of one convolution, and another a band of much smaller diameter comprising several convolutions. A hanger having these characteristics may be carried in the pocket or be placed in hand luggage, according as may be found most convenient.
As a suggestive embodiment of my invention, reference is made to the accompanying drawing wherein Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the hanger ready for use;
Fig. 2 shows the circular band with attached strap, as it appears when collapsed into a single convolution ready for storage;
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a suggestive form of strap which in its connection with the band serves also to join the two ends thereof;
Fig. 4 is a detail in section, taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 shows the device converted into a small band made up of multiple convolutions; and
Fig. 6 shows the device as it appears when these convolutions are being formed.
The hanger comprises essentially but two parts, viz. a band B which may be produced from lightweight spring steel or other suitable material. The cross sectional form of the band is largely optional-it may be a wire that is round, flat, etc. The band ends a and b are overlapped for a short distance where they are joined together, as by rivets II! which also secure the strap S thereto. This strap may be of any desired form and shape, but desirably is provided near its free end with a hole l2 into which may be fitted a hook l5 whereby to facilitate suspension of the hanger structure from a fixed support, such as a bar, nail, etc.
When first produced, the device will be in the form of a circular band with a laterally extending strap, as shown in Fig. 2. To convert the device into a hanger, one side 0 of the band, which is opposite the strap, is deflected toward the other and passed over the strap and down thereupon so as to lie in edge-to-edge relation with the band at the point where it joins with the strap. When so manipulated, the band assumes the form of a figure 8 with looped arms d and e extended oppositely. The strap is desirably formed with an offset portion 20 proximate to the band to provide a shoulder 25 which serves as a barrier to prevent the crossed-over upper run of the band from sliding upwardly and over the strap, thereby to resume its circular form which is shown in Fig. 2.
When opposite sides of the band are crossed, one behind the strap S, the device will serve admirably as a hanger for articles of wearing apparela shirt, or a skirt, for example. The strap then becomes a handle-pendant whereby to facilitate carrying and suspending of the hanger. The looped ends (1 and e of the hanger are maintained in outwardly extended relation and oppositely with respect to the strap which occupies a medial position.
A second collapsed form to which the device may be converted is suggested in Figs. 5 and 6. In reaching this position, the band is given a twist whereby to produce a plurality of convolutions which may then be compressed axially into substantially nesting relation. Although the strap may still project laterally, the compactness of the collapsed structure is such that it may be accommodated within a very small space, even within a coat pocket if desired. When removed to be placed in use, the band convolutions will tend to spring axially then outwardly, passing through the stage which is suggested in Fig. 6 while reaching the circular band form of Fig. 2. From this point on the band is manipulated, as before described, to cross its peripheral portion 0 over and behind the strap S, as shown in Fig. 1, whereupon the device is conditioned to serve as a hanger.
I claim:
1. A clothes hanger comprising an endless, normally circular. fiat wire band of spring metal, a
rigid strap afiixed at one end thereof to the band and extending laterally therefrom, the band being looped at opposite ends to present an elongated side opposite and beyond the strap for engagement therewith whereby to provide a hanger of figure 8 form with the strap upstanding centrally thereof for attachment to a support.
2. A clothes hanger in the form of an endless, normally circular, flat band of spring metal having secured thereto one end of a laterally extending strap, the band being looped at opposite ends to present an elongated side opposite and beyond the strap for engagement therewith whereby to provide a hanger of figure 8 form,
and means integral with the strap providing a stop to normally prevent disengagement of the band from the strap.
