This invention relates to button loops and especially to loops made from a single piece of wire and having at the base of the loop substantially abutting extremities relatively secured by a clip coupling for a limited movement therein.
The objects of the invention are to provide substantially abutting extremities of a button loop with enlargements cooperating with the structure of a clip coupling to movably secure the extremities therein, and to provide a clip coupling for a button loop having enlarged terminals, the structure of which clip coupling encloses the terminals and limits their.
The invention consists of the novel constructions, to be hereinafter described or claimed, for carrying out the above stated objects and such other objects as may hereinafter appear.
The character of the invention may be best understood by reference to one illustrative device embodying the invention and illustrated by the several figures in the accompanying drawings of which the Figure 1 is a front elevation of a button loop with parts in normal position and with the clip coupling illustrated in cross-section;the Figure 2 is a similar elevation, but of a complete device; the Figure 3 is a front elevation similar to that of the next previous figure, but illustrating an expanded loop, the parts enclosed within the coupling being illustrated in dotted lines; the Figure 4 is a side elevation of the button loop; and the Figure 5 is a group of views in perspective of the clip coupling in steps of forming. The device is a button loop for connecting a suspended strap to a button provided by a garment to be thereby supported, the loop comprising a suspension loop 1, a button receiving loop 2, and a button-retaining loop 3, the loops being associated in axial alignment. The button loop is preferably formed of a single piece of resilient wire, a middle porton of which is bent to form an elongated suspension loop 1 having the horizontal bar 4 and the remaining portions of the wire being bent to cooperatingly form the spring arms 5 and 6 to provide the loops 2 and 3 1930. relative positions of the enlargements 9 are not material so long as they substantially abut in their normal condition. Preferably however the enlargements 9, if looped as aforesaid, are positioned relatively divergent as illustrated more clearly by the Figure 1.
The clip coupling is preferably made of sheet metal stampedout in a flat section having a centralperforationlO, the edges of the flat section being turned at right angles thereto to provide the flange '11 so that the stamped section .is made to resemble a cover to abox. Diametrically opposite portions of the flange 11 are cut away, as at. 12 as illustrated by the Figure 5, for a purpose about to be explained. The clip coupling thus formed is partially folded approximately upon the dotted line 13 extending through the perforation 10 as illustrated by one of the views of the Figure 5, the clip coupling being folded to about the extent illustrated by the other view of the same'figurer ,The clip coupling is then placed over the aligned portions 8 and the abutting enlargements 9 and the folding operation on the clip coupling completed to permit the perforation 10 to provide a seat for the shank S of a button and to cause-the edges 14 of the portions of the flange 11 to meet-in close association as best illustrated by the Figure 4, each of the aligned portions 8 of the springarms 5 and 6 freely fitting withinan opening provided therefor by the cut away sections of the flange 11, as at 12, the remaining portions of the flange 11 cooperating to otherwise normally enclose the aligned portions 8 and permanently enclose the enlargementst) as illustrated by the Fig: ures 2 and 4. The shank Sof a button received within the loop 2 may rest upon the contracted throat portion 7 of the button loop, as illustrated by the Figure-1, without 7 expanding'that portiomth'e enlargements 9 substantiallyabutting and spaced from opposite portions of the flange 11, but the shank iii S may be urged from that position into the throat 7 thereby expanded, as illustrated by the Figures 2 and 3, the enlargements 9 separating until they approximately engage the opposite portions of the flange 11 serving as stops to limit the expansion of the spring arms 5 and 6 upon the passing of the shank S into the retaining loop 3, the shank naturally assumingits position in the shank seat provided by the perforation 1O as illustrated in dotted line by the Figure-2L Theresi'liency of the spring arms 5 and 6 is relied upon to restore the button loop parts to'th'eir normal condition. w a

1. A clip'coupling-for enclosing therein with a limited freedom of separating movements enlarged and normally abutting extremities of a button loop for receiving and retaining the shank of'a button, the clip coupling comprising a sheet metalsection having a central perforation and flanged edge portions, the clip coupling being folded at the perforation and over the extremities of a button loop to provide a seat for the shank and to move theflanged edge portions intoclose association to complete the enclosure, 'opposite flanged portions of the clip coupling providing stops to limit the separating movements of the extremities Within the clip couling. y r

A button loop comprising a pair of spring arms cooperatinglybent to form associated loops in axial alignment and having an intermediate normally contracted throat portion, the extremities of the arms being longitudinally aligned and having elongated looped enlargements relatively converging and substantially abutting, and a clip coupling mounted upon the aligned extremities, the clip coupling having flanged edge portions enclosing the enlargements, the enlargements having Within the clip coupling a freedom of separating movements upon the expansion of the throat portion, said flanged edge portions abutting each other and opposite flanged portions of the 'clip'coupling providing stopsto limit the expansion.
