Description

p 1930- R. J. HQDG: 1,775,102
BUTTON LOOP Filed June 28, 1929 HEJBEFIT -l-IUDGE UNITED STATES ROBERT J. HODGE, OF WEST HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE AMERICAN PATENT OFFICE BUCKLE COMPANY, OF WEST HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CONNECT- ICUT BUTTON LOOP Application filed June 28,
This invention relates to button loops hav ing multiple means for connecting a single strap with spaced buttons carried by a garment,0r the like, intended to be supported by the strap.
The object of the invention is to provide a double button loop with substantially rigid outer side arms but with laterally yieldable inner side arms held relatively movable therefor by means of a coupling.
The invention consists in the novel constructions, to be hereinafter described or claimed, for carrying out the above stated object and such other objects as may hereinafter appear.
The character of the invention may be best understood by reference to one illustrative device embodying the invention and illustrated by the figures in the accompanying drawing in which the Figure l is an elevation of a double button loop in normal condition; and the Figure 2 is a similar elevation but illustrating the double loop in expanding condition.
The device, as illustrated, is a double button loop for connecting a suspender strap to two buttons properly spacedapart and provided by a garment andcomprises the two button receiving loops 1 and2 and the two button retaining loops 3 and 4, each of the receiving loops being associated in axial alignment with a retaining loop having an expansible restrictedjentrance. The double button loop is preferably formed of a single piece of resilient wireof which the middle portion is bent to form the suspension loop 5 by which the device is suspended upon a looped strap. The remaining portions of the wire are each bent to form the outer side portions 6 of the double button loop and then each turned inwardly and returned to form the inner side portions 7 thereof, the extremities of the wire being bent inwardly into longitudinal alignment with tips 8 bent upwardly and normally resting in spaced relation. A coupling clip 9, similar to that described in an application of the applicant of even filing date herewith on an improvement in button loops, is here employed in inverted position. with open ends and base adapted to enclose the tips 1929. Serial No. 374,401.
8. The bosses 10, extending inwardly from both sides of the clip, provide stops against which the tips 8 laterally rest in normal position, as illustrated by the Figure 1, the bosses cooperating with the closed top to lock the bent tips 8 within the clip with a lateral freedom of movement toward and away from one another, as illustrated by the Figure Each button loop 1 and 2 is provided with a yieldable restricted opening 11 through which communication is had between each of the axially aligned loops 1 and 3 and 2 and 4, respectively.
As the spaced buttons having the shanks l2 and 13, illustrated in cross section by the Figure 1, are received within the loops 1 and 2, respectively, a downwardly directed force exerted upon these shanks will cause each to act as a cam to operate and expand a restricted opening, as illustrated by the Figure 2, to permit the passing of each shank into a retaining loop. As this expansion takes place each inner side portion 7 is thrust laterally inward toward one another, their movement being limited only by the meeting of the tips 8 within the clip 9, the resiliency of the wire being relied upon to return the inner side portions 7 upon the passing of the shanks, into their respective retaining loops. The extremities having the tips 8, if desired, may be otherwise formed and any form of coupling means in place of the clip as illustrated may be employed: for the invention is not limited to any specific form of construction and the details of the device may be varied to produce the novel features herein de scribed and claimed and to advantageously combine such a double loop in connection with other elements employed in garment supporters.
I claim:
1. A double button loop having associated button loops relatively spaced and comprising a rigid structure having depending side portions each forming a resilient button loop having a contracted throat. aligned extremities of the loophaving bent tips normally spaced apart and provided by the inner portions of both button loops, and a coupling having means for securing the aligned extremities and permitting them a limited relative freedom of movement upon the expansion of the contracted throats.
2. A double button loop comprising asingle piece of resilient Wire having a middle portion bent to form a suspension loop and the end portions bent to form associated button loops, each depending in spaced relation from the suspension loop, aligned extremities of the Wire having bent tips normally spaced apart, and a coupling having means forsecuring the aligned extremities and permitting them a limited relative freedom of movement upon the expansion of the associated button loops.
3. A double button loop having associated button loops relatively spaced, the loopscomprising a resilient Wire having a middle portion bent to form a sus ensio-n loo 3 end 30rtions of the Wire depending from the suspension loop and bent to form the outer s de arms of the associated button loops, and then inwardly bent and returned upwardly to form the inner side arms, aligned extremities of the Wire having bent tips provided bythe inner side arms, and a coupling having means for securing the'aligned extremities and permitting them a limited relative freedom of movement upon the expansion of the associated loops.
