Description

M. LELY I COSTUME JEWELRY Filed Sept. 4, 195
INVENTOR.
TTORNEYS Patented Mar. 17, 1936 UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIQE 8 Claims.
This invention relates to costume jewelry and has particular reference to improved means for attaching one or more ornaments to an article of wearing apparel.
The invention broadly contemplates in an article of the character described, one or more coiled contractile clips of any desired configuration and means continuous therewith constituting a guide for facilitating the insertion of the article decorated thereby.
The invention further provides an attaching clip comprising coiled contractile opposite end portions having ornaments mounted thereon with inter-engageable means for releasably attaching the ornaments together and guide means for facilitating the application of the clip to an article of wearing apparel.
The invention further resides in an article of costume jewelry including coiled contractile opposite end portions and an intermediate connecting portion continuous therewith providing a guide for facilitating the attachment of the contractile end portions to an article of wearing apparel. 7
Other objects of the invention reside in the provision of articles of costume jewelry which are not, unduly complicated in their construction or mode of use, which may be economically produced and which are highly decorative and effective.
With these and other objects in View, the invention is more particularly set forth in the specification and drawing wherein there are disclosed several embodiments of the invention, while the claims cover other variations and modifications falling within the scope of the invention.
In the drawing:
Fig. 1 illustrates an article of costume jewelry constructed in accordance with the invention in applied position to a garment.
- Fig. 2 is a rear view thereof.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view therethrough taken approximately on the line indicated at 33 in Fig. 2. a
Fig. 4 is a plan view of the same.
Fig. 5 is a rear view illustrating a modified form of the invention.
Fig. 6 is a side edge view thereof.
Fig. 7 is a rear view of another form of the invention.
Fig. 8 is a perspective view of a further modification.
Referring to the drawing by characters of reference and particularly to the form of the inand H designate respectively coiled contractile clips constructed from a length of resilient wire and preferably formed integral with a substantially V-shaped connecting portion I2 which constitutes a guide for facilitating the engagement of the same with an article of wearing apparel A which is adapted to be clamped between the connecting portion l2 and the coils I and II.
As shown, the divergent arms l4 and E of the connecting portion i2 extend diagonally across the coiled contractile portions i0 and l l with the bight l6 of said portion l2 protruding beyond the confines of the coiled portions. The terminals ll' preferably carry ornaments l8 which, as illustrated, are of spherical form and lie partially within the confines of the coils. If desired, the wire. may be further decorated with beads or other ornamental elements i9 strung thereon to obtain -a decorative effect as shown in the drawmg.
' The article may be employed for various purposes such as an ornament for a dress, an ornamental clasp for securing together scarfs, as an ornament for a hat, belt or any other article of wearing apparel.
' In the form of the invention illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6, the coiled contractile portions 20 and 2! which are joined by the V-shaped connecting portion 22 have hingedly connected to the forward convolutions thereof, ornamental or decorative elements 23 and 24 which permit of the swinging of the same with reference to the coiled portions 20 and 2|. This arrangement permits of the swinging of the decorative elements 29 and 24 away from the coils and connecting portion 22 to facilitate the engagement and disengagement of the coils with the garment or other article of wearing apparel.
In the form of the invention shown in Fig. '7, the device which is similar tothat illustrated in Figs. 5 and 6 is disclosed as having the decorative or ornamental articles 23 and 24 provided with separable means of connection in the form of a coupling having a resilient clasp 2t and keeper 2'! provided respectively on said elements.
In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 8, a single coil 28 is provided which has hingedly attached to the terminal of one end convolution thereof a decorative element 29, while the terminal of the other end convolution is bent into substantially U-shaped form as at 39 and extends between adjacent convolutions with the bight portion 3| protruding beyond the confines of said convolutions to provide a guide for facilitating the engagement of the device with a garment or other article of wearing apparel.
In its various forms the article of jewelry may be employed in various ways and in some instances it may be utilized for securing together the parts of a garment or the ends of a scarf, while it is readily adjustable with reference thereto and firmly fastened in place thereon against accidental or unintentional displacement.
What is claimed is:
1. A costume ornament including resilient coiled contractile opposite end portions each including a plurality of convolutions arranged in difierent planes and adapted to secure therebetween an article of wearing apparel and an intermediate portion joining said end portions, said intermediate portion being bent to substantially V formation extending beyond the confines of said end portions to provide a guide for facilitating the insertion of an article of wearing apparel between said intermediate portion and said contractible end portions.
2. A costume ornament including resilient coiled contractile opposite end portions each including a plurality of convolutions with adjacent convolutions of each end. portion arranged in different planes and adapted to secure therebetween an article of wearing apparel, ornamental means secured to the said end portions and an intermediate portion joining said end portions and providing a guide for facilitating the attachment of said costume ornament to an article of wearing apparel.
3. A costume ornament including resilient coiled contractile opposite end portions adjacent convolutions of which end portions are arranged in difi'erent planes, an ornament secured to the front convolutions of said end portions and an intermediate portion joining the rear convolutions of said end portions, said intermediate portion being rebent to provide a guide for facilitating the attachment of an article of wearing apparel between said intermediate portion and said contractile end portions,
4. A costume ornament including coiled contractile opposite end portions adjacent convolutions of which end portions are arranged in different planes, an ornament hingedly secured to the front convolutions of said end portions and an intermediate portion joining the rear convolutions of said end portions, said intermediate portion being bent to substantially V formation extending beyond the confines of the said contractile end portions to provide a guide for facilitating the attachment of an article of wearing apparel to said contractile end portions.
5. A costume ornament including a resilient coiled contractile body including a plurality of convolutions adjacent convolutions of which are arranged in different planes, a decorative element hingedly secured to the front convolution thereof and a rebent portion continuous with said contractile body and providing a guide for facilitating the attachment of an article of wearing apparel to said contractile body.
6. A costume ornament including coiled contractile opposite end portions adjacent convolutions of which end portions are arranged in different planes, an ornament secured to the front convolutionof each of said end portions and interengageable means on said ornaments for releasably attaching the same together and an intermediate portion connecting said opposite end portions providing a guide for facilitating the attachment of an article of wearing apparel to said end portions.
