SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 247,245, dated September 20, 1881.
Application filed July 30, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
BeitknownthatI,FRANszJosEPHFIscHER, of Hamilton, Butler county, Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my improved hoe; Fig. 2, a face view, and Fig. 3 a vertical section, of the same.
This invention relates to a novel device for attaching together the blade and handle of a hoe.
A is the blade. It is provided with two perforations, J J.
B is the handle.
F is a downward-hooking lug, adapted to engage in the lower perforation of the blade. This lug is rigidly secured to the handle B by means of the shank D and rivet I, as shown. The shank D partially encirclesthe handle, and in the vicinity of the blade A, and at about the vertical center of the handle, forms a fulcrumsurface, L. on each side of the handle.
U is a shank encircling the upper portion of the handle in a manner similar to the lower shank, and bearing upon the fulcrum-surface L with its fulcrum G, as clearly shown in the drawings. The shank O has an upward hooked lug, E, at its forward end, adapted to enter and engage with the upper perforation of the blade. seen to form a lever, by means of which the bolt H acts to forcibly separate the hooks E and F and engage them firmly with the blade. The fit of the shank O upon the upper surface of the handle should be such as to permit the properlever-like motion as the bolt H is actuated. The shank O has a fulcrum-bearing upon the upper side of the end of the handle, as shown atK, and it is immaterial which of the fulcrumbearings is utilized or which one is omitted.
In case the handle shrinks away so as to destroy the proper relation of the parts, the fulcrum-point K may be re-enforced by a scrap of leather laid between it and the bearing-surface of the shank O.
While I show and prefer that the lower shank, D, be rigidly fixed to the handle, as by the rivet I, I find that such rigid independent fixing is not essential, as the tendency of the bolt H is to bind the wholestructure firmly together.
I claim as my invention- In a hoe,the combination of a handle, a blade having two perforations,two oppositely-hooked lugs adapted to engage in said perforations and having rearwardly-projectin g shanks fulcrnmed, with reference to each other, and a bolt passing through the handle and shanks, and adapted to separate the lugs and bind the parts together, substantially as set forth.
