BED PARTITION Filed Nov. 28, 1947 awe/WM Alba H. PM
Patented May 31, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE BED PARTITION Albert Henry Power, Toronto, Ontario, Canada Application November 28, 1947, Serial No. 788,495
1 Claim.
My invention relates to improvements in beds as described in the present specification and shown in the accompanying drawing wherein there is illustrated an embodiment suitable for carrying out the invention.
In its general aspect my invention contemplates a novel construction and arrangement of a divisional wall in the form of a centre board, which .divides a bed into two separate and distinct spaces each for an occupant. The centre board is of a length to extend between the head and the foot of the bedstead and is desirably attached thereto. Separate mattresses are employed and these may be supported on any type of standard spring or otherwise.
The invention provides a double bed with the desirable features of two separate beds and moreover economizes on space and has from a health standpoint the advantages of single beds for the occupants particularly when one or other of the occupants is sick. The board completely divides the bed so that the space for one person is isolated from the space for the other, and the board does not interfere with the making up of the bed. The bed is admirably suited for use in hospitals and rooming houses. It will be found of general utility and would be a convenience in a nursery.
In a more specific aspect of the invention it provides a centre board of the character referred to which is preferably detachably secured to the head and foot of the bedstead as by clamps or like fasteners whereby the board can quickly and easily be removed as occasion requires.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in the drawing Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the centre board in applied position on a bed.
Fig. 2 is a transverse section on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional detail on line 3-3 of Fig. 2 showing a clamp attachment for the centre board.
Fig. 4 is a side view of one part of the clamp attachment. and Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the other part thereof.
The partitioning wall is in the form of a centre board 6 which is of a length to extend between the head 7 and the foot 8 of the bedstead 9 medially of the width of the bed, which bed may be of any standard type. The centre board upstands from the bedspring, indicated at I9. Two single mattresses are used, one at each side of the centre board. The mattresses are represented at I I, and it will be understood that separate bedclothes are used for each of them.
Suitable means are employed for attachment of the centre board to the bedstead. In the present instance the attachment means is shown as consisting of clamp fasteners at the ends of the centre board. Each fastener comprises a pair of clamp plates 12 and I3 for receiving an end portion of the centre board. The plate I2 has an integral shank M which is screw threaded for reception of a wing nut l5. The plate l3 has an inturned end l6 which is slotted as at H to fit on said shank IA. The plates are drawn into clamping engagement with an edge portion of the centre board by means of a bolt l8 passed through apertures therein and supplied with a nut. The plate I2 is secured to the adjacent end member of the bedstead by inserting its shank M through a hole therein and applying the wing nut. The clamp fasteners detachably secure the centre board to the head I and the foot 8 of the bedstead in order to permit it to be removed at will.
From the preceding description it Will be manifest that the invention provides a double bed in which the mattresses are separated by a partitioning board whereby the occupants may enjoy the advantages that accrue from single beds.
What I claim is:
A bed of the class described comprising a bedstead having end members constituting a head and a foot, a centre board extending between said end members, and clamp fasteners for securing said centre board to said end members, said clamp fasteners each including a pair of plates between which an edge portion of the centre board is gripped, one of the plates having an integral shank extending through an end member aforesaid and threadly engaged by a wing nut, the other plate having a bent end slotted to engage said shank, and a bolt passed through said plates to apply gripping pressure thereon.
ALBERT HENRY POWER.
