ATTACHMENT FOR FOLDING BEDSTEADS.
No. 393,803. Patented Dec. 4, 1888.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FIT'ZALLAN B. \VILLIAMS, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
-ATTACHMENT FOR FOLDING BEDSTEADS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 393,803, dated December 4, 1888. Application filed August 9, 1886- Serial No. 210,399. 010 model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FITZALLAN l3. \VIL- LIAMS, of Chicago, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Folding Bedsteads, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to attachments used in connection with the foot-rail of a folding bedstead for clamping the mattress and bedolothes at the foot and holding them up in position when the bedstead is folded; and the object is to simplify the construction and provide means for allowing the upper clamp to be turned to one side and for holding it up out of the way while the bed is being made.
The accompanying drawings illustrate the invention.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the attachment. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, showing two arms or clamps. Fig. 3 is a vertical central section. Fig. 4 is a horizontal section on line m w of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a section of a portion of the foot end of a bed of the class mentioned, showing the manner of applying the attachment. Fig. 6 is a front elevation of a modification, and Fig. '7 is a horizontal section on line. (I; a; of Fig. 6.
A designates a plate provided with screwholes a, for attachin it to the foot-rail B of the bedstead. This plate is provided with a projecting part, at, having a concavity, a on the inner side and being slotted, as at a This projecting part is preferably made in the form of the half of a round tube or pipe the same as would be produced by splitting a tube lengthwise through the center. At the top, as at c, it has a portion cut away between the slot and plate,- so as to enlarge the slot at that point.
The clamps C are provided with an enlarged, preferably cylindrical, head, a, a neck, 0', and shoulders 0 The Wide tip end e of the clamps will pass through the opening e by entering it, so that one of its edges will extend part way into the slot a and after the wide end is passed through the clamp may be turned a quarter round, so that the widened part at the end will be in a plane transversely of the slot. In this position the remaining portion of the clamp will pass through the opening 6 without extending into the slot until the neck is reached. The neck is of the proper thickness to pass down into the slot, and by now letting it down the clamp will be secured to the plate in working position. The clamps are both made alike and both are put in the plate in this manner, only the bottom one is put in with the reverse side up.
The head an d shoulders of the upper clamp are arranged to fit against the opposite sides of the shell of the projecting part, so as to slide up or down thereon when the clamp is moved squarely with the plate; but a slight oblique movement causes them to bind on the shell and hold that end of the clamp fast to it. The spring or rebound of the bedding and mattress on being compressed, acting on the tip end, gives this oblique action and holds the clamp down on them, and the clamp is released by pressing down on the tip end sufficient to bring the clamp into a position square with the plate. It can then be raised up to the top of the slot and swung round to one side against the foot-rail, so as to rest 011 the notch which forms the opening e, and this will prevent its falling down on the mattress while the bed is being put in order.
In the modification the projectiond on the plate is in the form of a rod attached to the plate A by a neck, (1, and extending above the top of the plate, as at 6 and the clamp, instead of having a head, is provided with a short slotted tubular part, (1 to fit over the rod, so as to slide up and down and bind thereon, substan tially in the manner before described, and when raised to' the top e of the rod may be turned around against the side of the foot-rail to the position shown in dotted lines, and one side of the tubular part (I will then rest on the top of the neck (1, so as to hold the clamp up, substantially in the manner .before described. In order to prevent it from being taken off the rod, a lug on a separate plate or piece may be attached after the clamp is put on, so as to prevent its passing off.
In order to make the spoon-shaped end of the clamp have a better hold on the bedding I make a large opening at f,which allows the clothing to spring up into the opening to aid in preventing slipping.
It is now quite common to use a woven-wire mattress under the hair mattress or bed-tick with this class of bedsteads, and in such case head and neck on one of said parts adapted to work in a slotted tubular projection on the other of said parts, and the said part A'heing provided with an opening at its top forming a shoulder for supporting said part 0 when raised to the top and turned to one side, substantialLv as speeified.
