Description

March 29, 1949. B, MURDOCK 2,465,913
GIRDLE Filed June 14, 1946 I INVENTOR BENJAMIN MURDOCK ATTORNEY Patented Mar. 29, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE GIRDLE Benjamin Murdock, Brooklyn, N. Y.
Application June 14, 1946, Serial No. 676,722
3 Claims. 1
This invention relates to ladies undergarments of the pantie-girdle type.
One difiiculty experienced with known types of pantie-girdles is the unnecessary bulk at the waist line of the garment when worn on the person. This difiiculty is caused by the extra length of material used in these known garments in order to furnish the flexibility required for the wearer to get into the garment. The design of the pantie-girdle is such as to necessitate this extra length; otherwise the girdle would not have the flexibility to pass over the hips of the intended wearer.
The present invention provides an improved pantie-girdle which eliminates the unnecessary bulk at the waist line necessitated in previous garments. This result is accomplished by a design which has less length or height than prior pantie-girdles but still gives the flexibility necessary to pull the garment over the hips. By a suitable combination of elastic sections having certain configurations and stretchable in certain directions only, the pantie-girdle of the invention provides, in addition to the foregoing advantage (1) firmer support across the buttocks, (2) flexibility of movement in an up and down or vertical direction without any sacrifice of up and down support, while still enabling the wearer to easily get into the garment, and (3) greatest stretch at the top of the garment and minimum stretch at the bottom. An important advantage of the pantie-girdle of the invention is that it does not lose its shape but retains its form fitting characteristics.
A more detailed description of the invention follows, in conjunction with a drawing, wherein Fig. 1 is a rear view of the garment of the invention; and
Fig. 2 is a front view of this same garment.
Referring to the drawing, there is shown a pantie-girdle having a V-shaped panel ll] of one way stretch material located centrally in the rear of the garment and which is stretchable in a vertical direction only, with the apex of the V at the top or waist sewed to the seam 22, and the widest portion of the V at the bottom. The V-shaped panel is disposed between rear side panels I2 and II, in turn, sewed to front panel l6 by side seams 20. Panels l2, I4 and [6 are made of one way stretch material which is stretchable in a horizontal direction only. In practice, panels l2, l4 and I6 may constitute a single piece of continuous material, although difierent pieces are preferred, as shown in the drawing, because of the saving of material in the manufacture of the garment.
It will be observed from an inspection of the drawing, that the vertical stretch of the rear centrally located V-shaped panel l0 extends from the top to the bottom of the garment to provide up and down flexibility for the bending movements of the wearer. The very narrow apex portion of the V panel ID at the top enables the garment to have maximum horizontal stretch at the waist portion of the garment due to the presence of the one way horizontally stretchable sections l2, I4 and I6 which extend substantially completely around the waist, thereby permitting the girdle to be pulled over the hips which have the largest circumferential dimensions of the wearer. The very wide bottom portion of V panel It] extends across the entire buttocks and provides a firmer support therefor than is obtainable in prior type pantie-girdles.
A suitable crotch member ['8 is provided, and which may comprise a rayon or other non-stretchable fabric, but which is cut on the bias line and so arranged to give a slight stretch horizontally.
The top seam 22 and the bottom seams 24 comprise suitable elastic ribbons suitably sewed to the adjoining sections.
It should be noted that the junction points of side seams 20 with waist seam 22 occur slightly to the rear of the garment, rather on the exact sides, in order to prevent bulging; thus obviating observance of these seams through the snug fitting overlying dress of the wearer.
I claim:
1. A pantie girdle comprising a rear centrally located V-shaped section of elastic material which is stretchable in a vertical direction only, the apex of said V-shaped section being located at the waist, the bottom of said V-shaped section being sufficiently wide to extend across the buttook-s of the wearer, elastic material which is stretchable in a horizonta1 direction only connected to both sides of said V-shaped section and extending circumferentially around the remaining portion of the girdle, and a crotch of inelastic material permanently secured to the bottom of said V-shaped section.
2. A ladys undergarment of the pantie girdle type comprising a rear centrally located V-shaped section of elastic material which is stretchable in a vertical direction only, the apex of said V-shaped section being located at the waist, the bottom of said V-shaped section being sufficiently wide to extend across the buttocks of the wearer, a pair of rear panels of elastic material which are stretchable in a horizontal direction only stitched to both sides of said V-shaped section and forming seams therewith, said panels being wider at the Waist than at the bottom of the garment, and a front section of elastic material which is stretchable in a horizontal direction only stitched to both panels, a ribbon of elastic material forming the top or waist portion of said garment and stitched to said sections and panels, the junction points of said seams and. said ribbon being located to one side of a line drawn through the exact center and sides of said garment, and a crotch portion of inelastic material, cut along the bias to provide a slight amount of elasticity in the horizontal direction, permanently secured to the central bottom portion of said V-shaped section and to the bottom of the front section.
3. A pantie-girdle comprising a rear centrally located V-shaped section of elastic material which is stretchable in a vertical direction only, the apex of said V-shaped section being located at the waist, the bottom of said V-shaped section being sufiiciently Wide to extend across the buttocks of the wearer, and elastic material which is stretch-'- able in a horizontal direction only connected to *both sides of said V-shaped section and extending REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the file of this patent:
