9 Claims.
The present invention relates to new and useful improvements in revolvers having for its primary object to improve the balance of the revolver without sacrificing the long range accuracy and ring power thereof.
In a rearmof this character the range thereof is controlled by the length of the barrel and in conventional designs, with the barrel extending forwardly of the handle a considerable distance, the flrearm looses its balance by reason of the added weight at its front end thereby making it more difficult to accurately fire' the revolver. Accordingly it is an object of the present invention to improve the balance of the revolver by positioning the handle substantially at the center thereof and placing the cylinder rearwardly of the handle and further to position the main part of the ring mechanism directly above the handle. A
A further object is to provide a device of this character of simple and practical construction. which is eicient and reliable in operation, relatively inexpensive to manufacture and otherwise well adapted for the purposes for which the same is intended.
Other objects and advantages reside in the details of construction and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:

Referring now to the drawings in detail, wherein for the purpose of illustration I have disclosed a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 5 designates a barrel projecting forwardly from a stock 6, the stock having a handle l extending downwardly therefrom and preferably of hollow construction and provided with a removable cover plate 8.

A rear sight arm 9 extends rearwardly from the top of the stock 6 with a rear sight I0 carried by said arm.
A rod II is reciprocally mounted in a bush-lng I2 rotatably carried at the rear end of the stock 6, the rod and bushing projecting rearwardly from the stock with a cylinder I3 rotatably supported on the rear end of the bushing under the arm 9. A guard 6a extends rearwardly from the stock 6 under the cylinder. A ratchet I4 is integrally formed or suitably secured to the front end of cylinder I3.
'Ihe front end of rod I I projects forwardly into a chamber I5 in the stock 6 in striking position by a primary hammer I6 secured to a transverse shaft I 'I journalled in the side walls of the chamber. The lower end of arm IB is formed with a shoulder I8 engaged 'by a lateral pin I9 at the rear end of an arm pivoted to the lower rear portion of a trigger 2I which is pivoted to the stock as shown at 22 behind a trigger guard 23 and working in the front edge of chamber I5. A wire spring 2li carried by the trigger holds the arm 20 in a raised position to releasably maintain the pin I9 engaged with the shoulder I3.
A wire coil spring- 25 suitably secured in the upper portion of chamber I5 has one end bearing against hammer I6 and is placed under tension by a forward movement of the hammer to urge the hammer in striking engagement with the front end of rod II when the hammer is released by pin I 9 during a predetermined rearward movement of trigger 2| doing the trigger pulling action. The trigger is returned to its forward position by a coil spring 2S positioned behind the trigger.
The rear end of rod I I projects into a chamber 2 in a rotatable cap 28 positioned at the rear end of cylinder I3 and integrally formed on the rear end of bushing I2, the cap being locked in position by a dove-tail shaped locking lug 2@ engaging a, complementary shaped groove 3B in the under side of arm 9.
A secondary hammer 3l in the form of a semicircular plate is pivoted in a vertical position on a transverse pin 32 in the chamber 2l, the lower edge of the hammer 3l being in the path of rearward sliding movement of rod Il and the upper edge of hammer 3l being formed with a forwardly projecting firing pin 3Ia working in an opening 33 in the upper front portion of cap 28 for tiring a cartridge 341 in the uppermost chamber of cylinder I3.
A cam 35 is also secured to shaft I 'l and is formed at its lower portion with a substantially radially extending slot 36 in which the pin I3 works for rotating the cam during the forward and backward movement of pin I9 and arm by trigger 2|.
A pawl 31 is pivoted at one end on a pin 38 carried eccentrically at the lower portion of cam 25, the pawl extending upwardly and rearwardly in a guide passage 39 at the rear end of stock 8 for engaging ratchet |4 at the front end of cylinder I3.
The front end of cylinder i3 is formed with circumferentially spaced recesses 40 receiving the tapered rear end of a locking pin 4| slidably mounted in the rear end of stock 6. A cap 42 slidably receives the frort end of pin 4| and which is also slidably carried by the Stock and with its front end riding on the edge of cam 35. A coil spring 44 is positioned in the cap behind pin 4| to project the pin into one of the recesses 4I). The edge of the cam is formed with a notch 43 in which the cap 42 -enters to permit unlocking movement of pin 4| during a predetermined movement of cam 35 to permit rotating of the cylinder by pawl 31 and ratchet |4.
In the operation of the device the cap 28 is removed from the rear end of cylinder |3 by a partial rotation of the cap and then withdrawn rearwardly to permit loading of the cylinder with cartridges 34 and the cap replaced and locked in position by the locking lug 29, the locking of the cap placing the firing pin 3|a in firing position with the uppermost cartridge and with the lower end of secondary hammer 3| in the path of rearward movement of rod II.
The cylinder I3 is normally held in a locked position by the locking pin 4| and the initial pulling force subjected to trigger 2| will swing primary hammer |6 forwardly to place the same under tension of spring and at the same time rotate cam to release locking pin 4| and move pawl 31 and ratchet |4 to rotate cylinder I3 to bring a loaded cartridge into firing position. Continued rotation of cam 35 by further rearward movement of trigger 2| will cause the cam to move the locking pin 4| rearwardly into locking engagement with the cylinder and thus hold the cylinder in firing position.
This continued movement of the trigger will also move the shoulder I8 at the lower edge of hammer I6 rearwardly to a point where the shoulder is released from pin I9 thus placing the hammer under the influence of spring 25 which then forces the primary hammer I6 rearwardly to stroke the rod the blow then being delivered to secondary hammer 3| which rocks the firing pin 32 forwardly for firing the cartridge.
In view of the foregoing description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings it is believed that a clear understanding of the device will be quite apparent to those skilled in this art. A more detailed description is accordingly deemed unnecessary.
It is to be understood, however, that even though there is herein shown and described a preferred embodiment of the invention the same is susceptible to certain changes fully comprehended by the spirit of the invention as herein described and the scope of thev appended claims.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
l. A revolver comprising a barrel, a cylinder rotatable at the rear end of the barrel, a handle for the barrel extending downwardly therefrom at in front of the cylinder, a secondary hammer positioned rearwardly of the cylinder. and operating means for the secondary hammer actuated by the trigger through the primary hammerr Y' n 3. A revolver comprising a barrel, a cylinder rotatable at the rear end of the barrel, a handle for the barrel extending downwardly therefrom at a point forwardly of the cylinder, said cylinder counterbalancing the weight of the barrel, and firing mechanism forv cartridges carried by the cylinder and including primary and secondary hammers at opposite ends of the cylinder, an operating connection between the hammers positioned axially of the cylinder, and trigger operating means for the primary hammer.
4. A revolver comprising a barrel, a cylinder rotatable at the rear end of the barrel, a handle for the barrel extending downwardly therefrom at a point forwardly of the cylinder, said cylinder counterbalancing the weight of the barrel, and firing mechanism for cartridges carried by the cylinder and including primary and secondary hammers at opposite ends of the cylinder, an operating rod slidable axially of the cylinder and transmitting motion of the primary hammer to the secondary hammer and trigger operating means for the primary hammer.

A revolver comprising a barrel, a cylinder rotatable at the rear end of the barrel, a handle for the barrel extending downwardly therefrom at a point forwardly of the cylinder, said cylinder counterbalancing the weight of the barrel, ring mechanism for cartridges carried by the cylinder and step by step feed means for the cylinder.
6. A revolver comprising a barrel, a cylinder rotatable at the rear end of the barrel, a handle for the barrel extending downwardly therefrom at a point forwardly of the cylinder, said cylinder counterbalancing the weight of the barrel, firing mechanism for cartridges carried by the cylinder and step by step feed means for the cylinder, said firing mechanism and said feed means being trigger actuated.
7. A revolver comprising a barrel, a cylinder rotatable at the rear end of the barrel, a handle for the barrel extending downwardly therefrom at a point forwardly of the cylinder, said cylinder counterbalancing the weight of the barrel, primary and secondary hammers at opposite ends of the cylinder, an operating connection between said hammers transmitting motion of one to the other, a step by step feed mechanism for the cylinder, and trigger actuated means for the hammers and said feed mechanism.
8. A revolver comprising a barrel, a cylinder rotatable at the rear end of the barrel, a handle for the barrel extending downwardly therefrom at a point forwardly of the cylinder, said cylinder counterbalancing the weight of the barrel, primary and secondary hammers at opposite ends of the cylinder, operating means between the hammers transmitting motion of one to the other.
