This invention relates to improvements in gloves and particularly relates to improvements in blanks or tranks for gloves and to thumb and forefinger constructions therefor.

An object of the invention is to provide a glove in which the back portion of the thumb is formed integrally with the palm portion whereby great economy of material is eifected.

Another object of the invention is to provide a glove in which the tip of the thumb and the base of the thumb are seamless thereby imparting greater strength and durability to the glove.

A further object of the invention is to provide a glove in which the back portion of the thumb is formed of material which is conventionally and normally cut away to provide an opening to which the thumb piece is sewn.

Another object of the invention is to provide a glove which will have enhanced visual appeal through the use of longer lines and which may be fabricated with economy of labor and material.

Further objects and advantages of'the invention will readily appear from the following description of a, preferred embodiment of the invention taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein Fig. 1 is a plan view of the main trank'which may be employed in making a glove.

Fig. 2 is a plan view of an auxiliary piece or trank which becomes the front portion of the forefinger of the finished glove.

Fig. 3 is plan view of another auxiliary piece or trank which becomes the front portion of the thumb of the finished glove.

Fig. 4 is a front plan view of a finished glove formed from the tranks illustrated in Figs. 1-3 and with the thumb piece bent back to show the relation of the assembled tranks;

Fig. 5 is a front plan view'of the glove similar to Fig. 4-. but with the thumb in its normal extended position.

Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a right-handed main trank similar to that shown in Fig. 1 folded along its vertical, longitudinal fold 1ine and with the auxiliary forefinger trank attached thereto.

The main trank or blank of the glove is indicated at It and is preferably a unitary piece comprising a palm portion H and a back portion E2. The respective finger portions of the: palm portion Ii are indicated at I, 2, 3 and 5 and the corresponding back finger portions ofthe ba ck portion H are indicated at I, 2' and 3', the numeral 4' representingthe'backportion oftl'ie forefinger. Palm portion H is slit deep along a line coinciding with the inner lateral edge of the third finger portion to define a free inner edge 3d adjacent finger portion 5.

An important feature of the invention is the provision of a glove having a thumb piece which is seamless at the tip thereof and whose back portion is formed integrally with the palm portion of the main trank. Accordingly, finger portion 5, which becomes the back and side portion of the thumb in the finished glove, is out having a free square edge E and is inwardly notched or cut away on both of its lateral edges at a point below edge E to form two

5a, and 5b symmetrical about the fold line F. Fold line F is located at approximately one-half the length of finger portion 5 measured along its outer lateral slit-edge 5c from free edge E, it being noted in this connection that theinner lateral slit-edge 5d of finger portion 5 is longer than said outer edge and is cut deeper into palm portion H for a purpose to be hereinafter indicated.

In forming the glove upper thumb section 50, of finger portion 5 is folded back along fold line'F which becomes the tip of the thumb and the main trank II] is folded along fold line l3 which is coincident with the outer lateral slit-edge 5c of finger portion 5.

The auxiliary forefinger trank 4 illustrated in Fig. 2 is an elongated piece having a square edge E at one end and a rounded edge R at its other end. Square edge E of auxiliary trank 4 is joined to square edge E of thumb section 5a of the main trank Ill by stitching, it being understood that thumb section 5a is to be folded back along fold line F as clearly shown in Figs. 6 and '7. Thus, after main trank ID has been folded along line l3 with auxiliary trank 4 stitched to thumb section to in the manner just described, the auxiliary trank 4 becomes the front portion of the forefinger of the finished glove.

Side edges l4 and Ma. of the main trank l0 are stitched together and the outer lateral edge of forefinger trank 4 is stitched to the respective outer'lateral edge of finger portion 4' of main trank Ill. The inner side of the forefinger of the glove may be provided with a conventional fourchette (not shown) to which the upper portion of the inner lateral edge of trank 4 may be stitched, the lower portion of said lateral edge being stitched to the free inner edge 3d of palm portion I l which is coincident witli'the inner lateral' edger of 'finger'portion' 3" as clearly "shown in Fig. 6; Theiouter'lateral edge ofthumb section fia'is' stitchedto the corresponding edge 50 of 3 thumb section 51) to form the back of the thumb.

The inner side of the little finger may also be provided with the usual fourchette and the remaining two fingers of the glove may similarly be provided with conventional fourchettes (not shown) to the front and back portions of which the respective later-a1 edges of finger portions 2 and 3 of palm portion II and finger portions 2' and 3' of back portion l2 may be stitched.

In order to complete the thumb portion of the glove, a preferably diamond-shaped trank illustrated in Fig. 3, is employed. Trank 5', which may vary in shape and which may have rounded or pointed ends, becomes the face of the thumb in the completed glove, being stitched along one side to the inner edge 5d of thumb section 51) and being stitched along its other side to the inner edge of thumb section 5a uppermost and to the lower portion of the free inner edge 3d of palm portion I! lowermost. Thumb trank portion 5 is wider medially than at its extremities in order to give proper configuration and smooth fit to the thumb and to freely allow for the normal range of movement of the thumb.

While the drawings and the foregoing description have indicated the use of a separate trank 4 forming the front of the forefinger in the finished glove, it is quite possible to cut the main trank ill with a forefinger portion integral with thumb section 5a and foldable along a suitably disposed fold line. However, this would result in wastage of material and the provision of a separately out forefinger trank t is desirable in the interest of economy of material.

It is obvious that the particular shape and size of the main trank Iii, the auxiliary front forefinger trank 4 and the auxiliary front thumb trank 5' may be modified for use in mens, womens and childrens gloves. The aforementioned tranks may be cut from all kinds of leather as well as fabrics such as cotton, rayon or other material.

Since certain additional modifications may be made in the component tranks and finished gloves of my invention without departing from the scope thereof. it is intended that all matter contained in the foregoing description and shown in the accompanying drawings be interpreted merely as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.

By the front portion of the thumb as used in the foregoing specification and annexed claims is meant that portion of the thumb extending downwardly from the tip of the thumb across the ball of the thumb to the base of the thumb.

The side and back portion of the thumb as used in the specification and claims refers to the remaining portion of the thumb not included in the definition of the foregoing paragraph.

I claim:

1. A glove comprising a main trank having integral palm and back portions provided with front and back finger portions, said palm portion having an innermost finger portion inwardly notched on both of its lateral edges and symmetricall bendable about a fold line to form the side and back portions of the thumb of the finished glove, said thumb portions being located Wholly within said main trank, the tip of the thumb being seamless, an auxiliary front forefinger trank joined to the free edge of said innermost finger portion and a front thumb trank joined to said back portion of the thumb.

2. A glove comprising a main trank having integral palm and back portions provided with front and back finger portions, said palm portion having an innermost finger portion inwardly notched on both of its lateral edges and symmetrically bendable about a fold line to form the side and back portions of the thumb of the finished glove, the tip of the thumb being seamless, an auxiliary front forefinger trank joined to the free edge of said innermost finger portion and a diamond-shaped front thumb trank joined to said back portion of the thumb along three of its edges and joined along its fourth edge to said palm portion.

A trank for a glove, said trank having integral palm and back portions provided with front and back finger portions, said palm portion being slit deep along a line coinciding with the inner lateral edge of the third finger portion thereof to define a free inner edge and an innermost finger portion, said innermost finger portion of the palm portion having a free square edge and being inwardly notched on both of its lateral edges at a point below said square edge to form upper and lower thumb sections symmetrical about a fold line defining the tip of the thumb, said thumb sections being located wholly within the body of the trank adjacent the finger portions thereof.

4. A glove comprising a main trank having integral palm and back portions provided with front and back finger portions, said palm portion being slit deep along a line coinciding with the inner lateral edge of the third finger portion thereof to define a free inner edge and an innermost finger portion, said innermost finger portion of the palm portion having a free square edge and being inwardly notched on both of its lateral edges at a point below said square edge to form upper and lower thumb sections symmetrical about a fold line defining the tip of the thumb, an auxiliary front forefinger trank joined to the free square edge of said innermost finger portion and a front thumb trank joined to said upper and lower thumb sections and to said free inner edge of the palm portion.

A glove comprising a main trank having integral palm and back portions provided with front and back finger portions, said palm portion being slit deep along a line coinciding with the inner lateral edge of the third finger portion thereof to define a free inner edge and an innermost finger portion, said innermost finger portion of the palm portion having a free square edge and being inwardly notched on both of its lateral edges a point below said square edge to form upper and lower thumb sections symmetrical about a fold line defining the tip of the thumb, said thumb sections being located wholly within the main trank, an auxiliary front forefinger trank joined to the free square edge of said innermost finger portion and a front thumb trank joined to said upper and lower thumb sections and to said free inner edge of the palm portion, said front thumb trank being wider medially than at its extremities.

6. A glove comprising a main integral palm and back portions front and back finger portions, said palm portion being slit deep along a line coinciding with the inner lateral edge of the third finger portion thereof to define a free inner edge and an innermost finger portion, said innermost finger portion of the palm portion having a free square edge and being inwardly notched on both of its lateral edges at a point below said square edge to form upper and lower thumb sections symmetrical about a fold line defining the tip of the thumb,

trank having provided with an auxiliary front forefinger trank joined to the free square edge of said innermost finger portion and a diamond-shaped front thumb trank joined to said upper and lower thumb sections and to said free inner edge of the palm portion.

'7. A glove comprising a main trank having integral palm and back portions provided with front and back finger portions, said palm portion being slit deep along a line coinciding with the inner lateral edge of the third finger portion thereof to define a free inner edge and an innermost finger portion, said innermost finger portion of the palm portion having a free square edge and being inwardly notched on both of its lateral edges at a point below said square edge to form upper and lower thumb sections symmetrical about a fold line defining the tip of the thumb, said upper and lower thumb sections becoming the side and back portion of the thumb in the 6 completed glove, an auxiliary front forefinger trank joined to the free square edge of said innermost finger portion and an auxiliary thumb trank joined to said upper and lower thumb sections and to said free inner edge of the palm portion to complete the thumb of the glove, said auxiliary thumb trank being wider medially than at its extremities.
