DRAWER GUIDE l Filed June 8, 1945 4/ mlm B, WWW/Vm@ Patented Feb. 1, 1949 UNITED STATES PATENT oFFlcE Robert H. McMurtrie, Huntingburg, Ind.
' Application June 8, 1945, Serial No. 598,298 l 2 Claims.
My invention relates to improvements in drawer guides for the drawers ofv cabinets, bureaus, buffets, and the like, the primary object in View being to provide means of simple form and inexpensive construction for guiding drawers directly into casings and which is especially adapted to prevent sagging of drawers when the same are pulled open, and to compensate for warping of the sides of such casings, and to render opening and closing of drawers easy.
Other and subordinate objects, also comprehended by my invention, together with the precise nature of my improvements, will be readily understood when the succeeding description and claims are read with reference to the drawing accompanying and forming a part of this specication.
In said drawings:
Figure 1 is a view in transverse section illustrating my invention embodied in a cabinet, and a drawer,
Figure 2 is a view in longitudinal section with the drawer removed,
Figure 3 is a view in perspective of the drawer,
Figure 4 is a similar view of a portion of the right angled guide track, and
Figure 5 is a similar view of the other guide track.
Reference being had to the drawing by numerals, my invention has been shown therein, by way of illustration of the preferred embodiment thereof, as forming part of the equipment of a cabinet I having sides 2 and a top 3, and a drawer 4 provided with sides 5, a bottom 6, a front 1, and a back 8.
The drawer 4 is provided with a pair of lateral, exterior, guide anges 9 extending along the upper edges of the sides 5. A pair of disk-like rollers I are suitably mounted on the sides 5 of the drawer 4, respectively, adjacent to the lower rear corners of said sides.
The sides 2 of the cabinet I are provided immediately below the level of the lower face of the top 3 with longitudinal, internal guide grooves I I therein extending the full length oi said sides, said grooves II' accommodating the iianges 9 therein, whereby the drawer 4 is suspended at its top in the cabinet I. At the front end of each guide groove II, an anti-friction roller, as at I2, is suitably mounted on the side 2 of the cabinet I, in a recess I3 in said side, with its top substantially level with the bottom of the guide groove A pair of channel guide tracks I4, I are countersunk in the inner faces of the sides 2 to extend longitudinally parallel with the guide grooves I I and in which the rollers I0 are adapted to ride. The guide track I4 is of right-angled form in cross-section, whereasv the guide track I5 is substantially C-shaped in cross-section.
As will now be seen, by virtue of my invention, the drawer 4 when closed, is suspended in the cabinet i so that it cannot sag under weight therein, since it is supported by the anges 9 in the guide grooves I-I. Also, when the drawer 4 is pulled open, the flanges 9 and guide grooves I I tend to prevent the drawer from sagging and the rollers I, being at the rear, lower, side corners of the drawer 4 and prevented from upward play by the guide tracks i4, I5, serve to prevent the drawer 4 from sagging, in conjunction with the flanges Q and guide grooves I I, when said drawer 4 is pulled substantially completely open. The guide grooves II are deeper than the flanges 9 so as to obviate binding of said flanges in said grooves, should the sides 2 of the cabinet warp. The guide track I5 of C-shaped cross-section forms sides thereon designed to confine the roller I between the same against free lateral play so as to prevent said roller from running out of said guide track I5 because of warping of the drawer 4 sidewise away from said guide track I5, and also because of deformation of said guide track I5 laterally resulting from warping of the adjacent side of 2 of the cabinet I outwardly. The rightangled cross-section guide track I4 is completely open at one side and is thereby designed to permit side play of the roller I9 therein so as to compensate for warping of the drawer 4 sidewise away from the guide track I5, and also to compensate for lateral movement of the drawer 4 resulting from lateral deformation of the guide track i5. Thus, tendency of the drawer 4 to bind against the casing I at one side is compensated for at the other side thereof and in a manner tending to obviate binding at either side of said drawer. The rollers I2 provide for easily inserting the drawer 4 in the cabinet I, and together with the rollers Ill, for easy opening and closing of said drawer.
The drawer 4 is preferably made in one piece of a suitable light, strong warp-proof plastic.
The foregoing will, it is believed, suce to impart a, clear understanding of my invention without further explanation of my invention,
Manifestly, the invention, as described, is susceptible of modification without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What claim is:
