ROLLER SUPPORT FOR SLIDING DOORS Filed May 6, 1949 INVENTOR. 27
- Harold 6? 114 121- HIS A T TOHNE" Y Patented Apr. 22, 1952 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ROLLER SUPPORT FOR SLIDING DOORS Harold G. Myhr, Pacific Grove, Calif. Application May 6, 1949, Serial No. 91,836
1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a roller support for sliding doors and has for one of its objects the production of a simple and efficient means for supporting a slidin door in a manner whereby the door may easily slide to and from a closed position without binding.
A further object of this invention is the production of a simple and efiicient means for bracing and keeping the door straight and preventing the door from warping.
Other objects and advantages of the present invention will appear throughout the following specification and claim.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of my improved door structure, certain parts being broken away and certain parts being shown in longitudinal section;
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary sectional perspective view of the bottom channel or binder strip;
Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Figure 1;
Figure 5 is a perspective view of one of the end plates;
Figure 6 is a fragmentary sectional view of a modified form of the invention, certain parts being shown in longitudinal section;
Figure 7 is a vertical sectional view taken on line 1-1 of Figure 6; and
Figure 8 is a perspective view of the roller carrying member shown in Figure 6.
By referring to the drawing, it will be seen that It] designates the door which is provided with an upper longitudinal channel or binder strip I I which encases the upper edge of the door I 0. The ends of the door II) are also encased in vertical channel or binder strips I2, which are similar to the strip II. The bottom edge of the door I!) is provided with a plurality of roller receiving notches I3 which are located at proper points to permit the rollers mounted therein to efiiciently support the door. These notches are formed in the lower edge of the door I to register with selected apertures I4 which are preformed in the bottom channel or binder strip I throughout the length thereof, as shown in Figure 3.
Roller carrying frames I6 which carry rollers I! are fitted upon the lower edges of the door I 0 in a position to support a roller I! in a selected notch I3, the lower edge of the roller or rollers I'I protruding below the lower edge of the door and through the aperture or apertures I4, so as to restupon the invented T-shaped supporting track IS. The track l8 rests upon the floor below the bottom edge of the door Ill and extends for a proper distance to support the door in its movement to and from an open and closed position. The bottom channel or hinder strip I5 comprises a longitudinally extending central door engaging portion I9 in which the apertures I 4 are formed and which abuts the bottom edge of the door Ill. The strip I 5 is provided with depressed channels 20 which flank either side of the central portion I9. The strip I5 is also provided with upstanding side flanges 2| having inturned edges which abut the side faces of the door I0, as shown in Figure 2. C10- sure plates 22 are-carried by the' ends of the door In and shield the ends of the strip I5.
It will be noted by considering particularly Figures 2 and 3, that the channel strip I5 is provided with longitudinally aligned roller receiving slots I4 formed therein through which the rollers I 1 extend. The strip I5also is provided with longitudinally extending laterally spaced parallel depressed channels 20 depending below the rollers, thereby defining lateral guards upon opposite sides of the rollers to prevent accidental lateral displacement of the rollers from a supporting rail upon which the rollers are adapted to travel. The upstanding side flanges 2| upon each side of the strip are located laterally of the channels and each flange 2| is provided with an upper inturned door abutment edge to hold the flange 2| in braced laterally spaced relation relative to the bottom edge of the door upon which the roller support is adapted to be carried.
In Figures 6 and '7 there is shown a modified form of the invention wherein the door 23 is provided with an upper channel bracing strip 24 and end strips 25 generally similar to the strips shown in Figure 1. The door 23 is notched at selected intervals to provide notches 26 along the lower edge of the door 23 and to register with selected preformed apertures 21 formed in the bottom channel or binder strip 28. A roller carrying member 29 is fixed to the under face of the bottom strip 28, as shown in Figure 6, adjacent each selected notch 26 to support a roller 30 within the selected notch 26. The roller 30 is journaled upon the upstanding plates 3| of the member 29. The roller 30 protrudes below the bottom of the member 29 and rests upon the inverted T-shaped track 32. The strip 28 is generally of the same structure as that shown in Figure 3, but the strips may be changed if notches at selected locations, whereas in other 7 instances more rollers may be required for eflicient operation, in which event any desired number of notches may be formed in the lower edge of the door to accommodate the desired number of rollers which may be located to register with the selected apertures in the strips and 28.
By means of the structure illustrated this will facilitate the building of a strong and efficient door even if the door may be constructed of plywood. Furthermore, the structure illustrated provides a very economically-constructed door.
It should be noted that the depressed channels or depressed channel portions which flank either side of the central portion I9--note Figure 2 of the drawing, provide means to prevent lateral displacement of the rollers relative to the supporting track. The upstanding side flanges 2| of the channel strip will protect the sides of the door adjacent the bottom thereof.
Certain detail changes in the construction and arrangement of parts may be made provided such changes fall within the scope of the appended I claim.
Having described the invention, what I claim as new is:
A roller support for sliding doors and the like, comprising a roller receiving channel strip having longitudinally aligned roller receiving slots formed therein, rollers extending through said slots, said strip having longitudinally extending laterally spaced parallel depressed channels depending below said rollers thereby defining lateral guards upon opposite sides of said rollers to prevent accidental lateral displacement of the rollers from a supporting rail upon which the rollers are adapted to travel, and an upstanding side flange upon each side of said strip laterally of each channel, and each flange having an upper inturned door abutment edge to hold the flange in braced lateral spaced relation relative to a door upon which the strip is adapted to be secured thereby defining a spaced shield along the bottom edge of the door upon which the roller support is adapted to be carried.
