' ATTORNEY UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICEO CHARLES RIOHTMANN, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
BAG-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 246,035, dated August 23, 1881.
Application filed March 14, 1881.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES RICHTMANN, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to' furnish for bags, satchels, va1ises,&c., an improved lock, which is arranged entirely on the outside of the frame and constructed in such a manner that supplementary locking devices at or near the corners are provided, which are opened or closed together with the locking device at the central part of the bag-frame.
The invention consists of a bag-frame the exteriorjaw of which is provided with sliding and spring-acted rods, which extend from the central lock-casing to points at or near the corners of the frame, the bolts being arranged with catches at both ends, so as to take hold of the catches of the inner jaw at the center as well as at the corners of the bag-frame.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation, partly in section, of myimproved bag-lock. Fig. 2 is atop view, partly in section; and Figs. 3, 4, and 5 are vertical transverse sections of the bag-frame, respectively on lines aa2, 3 y, and z 2, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts In the drawings, A A represent a bag or satchel frame of the usual construction, to the outer jaw, A, of which is applied, at the central part, a casing, B, with the regular baglock 0. The casing B is provided with the usual spring-pushers, B, by which the recessed catches a a of a plate, I), attached to the center of the inner jaw, A, are released. To the spring-pushersB are applied longitudinal bolts D, which are extended inwardly into the casing B, and are provided with interior hookcatches, a, and also in outward direction toward the ends or corners of the bag-frame A A, where they are provided with catches d. The longitudinal locking-bolts D are guided in perforated lugs e e of top plates or mountings E of the outer jaw, A, and also in supplementary sockets or casings e at or near the corners of the frame, which sockets are preferably made in one piece with the mounting-plates E. The inner jaw is also provided, at or near (ModeL) the corners of the frame, with plates 1), having i n wardly-proj ectin g recessed catches 6 which, like the catches of the central plate, I), enter through corresponding openings ofthe sockets into the recesses of the central and corner catches, so as to lock the bag-frame at the center and corners thereof, and dispense thereby with the separate staples or catches heretofore employed at the corners of the bag-frames.
In place of the sliding caps of the middle casing, projecting pushers or other suitable device by which the locking-bolts are conveniently taken hold of for being withdrawn may be arranged. The bag is opened by pressing upon the spring-pushers and withdrawing simultaneously the end catches of the lockingbolts from the center and outer catches of the inner jaw, A.
Between the guide-lugs 0 maybe placed upon the locking-bolts D the sleeves of the handle- 7 5 fastening.
The exterior moun tin )lates E are also provided with recesses f for the passage of straps,
if such are desired to be used around the bag or satchel.
As the entire locking device is arranged on the outside of the bag-frame, it not only forms an ornamental feature of the same, but is not in the way of the material from which the bag is made when riveting the same to the frame. As both the center and corner locking devices are operated at the same time, the opening and closing of the traveling-bag is greatly facilifated, and by the same device not only the appearance of the bag-frame enhanced, but also In a bag-lock, the combination of a cen- In testimony that I claim the foregoing asgxo tral casing, 13, and Sockets 0 on the outside of my invention I have signed my name, in presthe outer jaw, at or near the corners of the ence of two Witnesses,tl1is 22d day of Februbag-frame, with longitudinal locking-bolts D, ary, 1881. connected to the spring-pushers B of the centrel casing", and with central endeorner catches I CHARLES RIOHTMANN' 0f the inner jaw of the bag-frame, which are Witnesses: simultaneously locked or released by the lon- PAUL GOEPEL, gituclinal bolts D substantially as described.
