This invention relates to improvements in sanding blocks.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved sanding block which will support and firmly hold a piece or sheet of sand paper when surrounding the same and attached thereto.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved sanding block for supporting a sheet of sand paper comprising an elongated rectangular upper block or member and a pair of oppositely extending wedging blocks or members, said upper block or member having a longitudinally extending slot formed in its upper surface and a cooperating inverted V-shape metal sand paper clamping or wedging strip removably supported in said slot together with the ends of a sheet of sand paper, and one of said wedging blocks being movable longitudinally with respect to the other block for spreading the blocks to firmly bind and secure the sheet of sand paper about the three blocks forming the sanding block.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved three piece sanding block including a substantially rectangular upper block member and a pair of cooperating wedge shape block members secured thereto by means of a pair of screws, said upper wedge-shaped member being longitudinally slotted and capable of relative movement with respect to the upper block and lower wedging block, the upper block being formed with a longitudinally extending slot for supporting the ends of a sheet of sand paper when positioned about the blocks, and an inverted V-shape metal sand paper clamping strip receivable in said slot.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved sanding block which will be highly eificient in operation and relatively inexpensive to manufacture and produce.
Other objects will appear as the description proceeds.
In the accompanying drawings which form a part of this application,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved sanding block, showing the intermediate wedging block in dotted lines and in extended position;
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Like characters of reference are used throughout the following specification and the accompanying drawings to designate corresponding parts.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided an improved sanding block comprising a substantially rectangular upper block I having a longitudinally extending slot 2 formed in its upper surface.
A pair of oppositely disposed wedge- shaped block members 3 and 4 are disposed below the upper block I for cooperation therewith.
The intermediate or upper wedge-shaped block member 3 is formed with an elongated longitudinally extending slot 5 extending completely through it.
The lower wedging block 4 is attached to the upper block I below the same and in vertical alignment therewith, being held by the spaced screws 6 and I extending through the block 4, through the slot 5 in the block 3, and into the upper block I.
A sheet of sand paper 8 is adapted to be disposed about the sanding block with its opposite ends 9 and I0 received within the longitudinally extending slot 2 in the upper surface of the upper block I.
An inverted V-shape metal clamping and wedging strip I I is adapted to be inserted within the slot 2 between the ends 9 and III of the sheet of sand paper 8 to firmly hold the same in operative position.
The sheet of sand paper 8 is attached to the sanding block when the wedging block 3 is disposed in its outermost position as shown in Figures 1 and 2. By pushing the wedging block 3 inwardly until its end is flush with the ends of the blocks I and 4, the over-all dimension of the sanding block will be increased to bind the sand paper tightly about it.
From the foregoing description, it will be apparent that there has been devised and provided a highly efficient form of sanding block which may be manufactured at a relatively low cost.
While the preferred embodiment of the instant invention has been illustrated and described, it will be understood that it is not intended to limit the scope of the invention thereto, as many minor changes in detail of construction may be resorted to without departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having described the invention what is claimed as new is:
1. A sanding block comprising a top block member formed with a longitudinally extending slot in its upper surface, an inverted V-shape clamping strip disposable therein, a pair of wedgeshaped block members supported below said top member, the intermediate or upper wedge-shaped block member being longitudinally slotted and movable with respect to said top block member, securing screws extending through the lower wedge-shaped block member and through the slot in said intermediate block member into said top block member, and a sheet of sand paper disposed about said block members having its opposite edges secured in the slot in the top of said top block member by means of said inverted V-shape clamping strip.
2. A sanding block comprising a rectangular top block member and a wedge shaped bottom member secured together, a longitudinal slot ex,-' tending the length of said top block, a, single sheet of sand paper positioned about said block. members, the free edges thereof being secured in said slot, and a complementary wedge. positioned between said block members, said scuring means consisting of a pair of retaining and guiding;
screws, and said complementary wedge is slotted and movable along said guiding screws.
