This invention relates to'pencil clips and more particularly to a device of this character supporting a knife blade. 1
An important object of the invention is'to provide a device of this character, in which the mounting-of the knife blade thereon is such that the blade may not beat anytime accidentally opened or opened while in position uponthe pencil. I p
. A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby the blade will be relatively securely held in its operative position.
These and other objects I attainby the construction shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein for the purpose'of illustration is showna preferred embodiment of my 1nvention and wherein a Figure 1 is a side elevation showing a combined pencil clip and knifelconstructed in accordance with my invention applied to a pencil;
Figure 2 is an elevation at right angles to the view shown in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a longitudinal sectional View therethrough, the knife being in the open position Figure 4 is an end elevation partially broken away.
Referrin now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral 10 indicates a tubular barrel adapted to receive the pencil and having one end thereof slotted at 11 to producefingers 12, which are inbent to resiliently grip a pencil passed through the barrel. The
opposite end of the barrel is provided with diametrically opposed ears 13, apertured, as at 14:. One of the slots 11 disposed upon a diameter at right angles to the diameter upon which the ears 13' are arranged is elongated,
as at 15, for apurpose presently to appear.
The numeral 16 generally indicatesa'blade support arcuately curved with an internal curvature similar to that of the exterior of the barrel 10. This'support is slightly more than semi-cylindrical and has projecting inwardly therefrom at points equally spaced from its side edges pivot lugs '17 whichare arranged upon the diameter of the support and are adapted to' enter the apertures 14 of the ears 13. These lugs are preferably formed by the inturned endv portions of an arcuately curved band 18 which are secured to and form a reinforcement for the Wall of the support.
At one end, the support has projecting therefrom a knife blade 19, which is rigidly seedges'of the support beyond. the

cured thereto and which, when thesupport is in applled position and arrangedat that side of the tube lOhaving the'slot 15, has its cutting edge extendedinto said slot. 1
It will .be obvious that the extension of the diameter will cause this support to frictionally engage with the walls of the tube as the support is swung from one side tothe othersiof the tube and resist such movements until they are nearly completed when the extended portions Wlll spring over the wall'of'the barrel and firmly hold the support in its new position.
The slotted end of the barrel 10 is provided with an integral extension 20 forming a clip for engagement over the outer wall of a pocket, within which the pencil, to which the device is applied, is inserted. The outer face,
of this entension is preferably constructedto form a nail file, as indicated at21.
It will be obvious that adevice of this character may be carried with safety and will provide a convenient knife blade foruse in sharpening pencils and the like. The extension or clip 20 provides an extension of the effective length of the tube, such that it may" be conveniently handled.
such. specific i Y of the tube to positions where it substantially,
aligns with the tube and either end thereof extends outwardlyfro'in the tube, a knife blade secured to andextendingoutwardly' from one end of the support and means for frictionally holding the support in either of said positions. V
' 2. In a pencil clip, a tube adapted to receive and frictionally hold a pencil and through opposite ends "offwhich the pencil may extend, an arcuately curved blade sup-' v port pivoted. intermediate its ends to one I end of th e'tube and swingable about said end of the tube to positions where it substantially aligns with the tube and either end thereof extends outwardly from the tube, a knife ing the tube having a longitudinally extendingslot receiving the edge of the knife blade Whenin one of said positions.
3. In a pencil clip, a tube adapted to receiveand frictionally hold a pencil, an arcuately curved blade support pivoted intermediate its ends to one end of the tube and svvingable about said end of the tube to positions Where it substantially aligns with the tube and either end thereof extends outwardly from the tube, a knife blade secured to and extendoutwardly from one end of the support, theedges of said support'being spaced apart a distance less than the external diameter of the tube.
4. In a pencil clip, a tube adapted to receive and frictionally hold a pencil and through opposite ends of Which the pencil may extend, an arcuately curved blade support pivoted intermediate its ends. to one end of the tube and swingable about said end of the tube to positions Where it substantially aligns With the tube and either end thereof extends outwardly fronrthe tube, a knife blade secured to and extending outwardly from one end of the support, the edges of said support being spaced apart a distance less than the external diameter of the tube, said tube having a slot receiving the cutting edge of the blade When in one of said positions In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
