United States Patent 2,919,828 COMBINATION PAINT BRUSH SCRAPER AND SHAPER Charles B. Lemke, Tampa, Fla. Application May 23, 1958, Serial No. 737,279 4 Claims. (Cl. 220-90) This invention relates to new and useful improvements in a brush scraper and shaper and has for its principal object a brush scraper and shaper attachment which is readily applied to the open top of a paint can or the like.

Another object of my invention is in the provision of a brush wiping attachment which when attached to the open end of a paint can will effectively remove excess paint or the like from the brush when it is withdrawn from the can.

Still another object of my invention is in the provision of a paint brush scraper and shaper which can be readily applied to cans of various sizes.

Yet another and equally important object of my invention is in the provision of a device of this character which when placed upon a can or the like will be held against accidental displacement therefrom during the brush scraping and shaping operation.

Other objects will appear hereinafter.

The invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings showing the preferred form of construction, and in which Fig. l is a fragmentary perspective view of my improved paint brush scraper and shaper when applied to a paint can or the like;

Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the paint brush scraper and shaper when applied to a paint can or the like; and

Fig. 3 is a perspective view of my paint brush scraper and shaper.

Referring to Fig. 1 I show my improved paint brush scraper and shaper in its applied position with respect to a paint can or the like which can provides upwardly extending

circular flange members

11 and 12 which encircle and describe the open top 13 thereof.

My improved paint brush scraper and shaper comprises an elongated cross bar 14 having diverging

end portions

15 and 16. These diverging end portions 15. and 16 terminate into laterally extending outside depending

legs

17 and 18.

The arrangement of parts hereinabove described, comprise a paint brush scraper and shaper that is readily attachable to paint cans of various sizes. In so attaching my improved paint brush scraper and shaper, the upwardly extending

circular flanges

inside legs

21 and 22. The paint brush scraper and shaper is then moved transversely with respect to the longitudinal axis of the paint can in a manner that the

23 and 24 of the

inside legs

21 and 22 will engage the under side of the peripheral edge of the opening of the can 10. Such a position is shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The rectangular cross bar 14 is provided with a scraper and shaper edge 25 across which the brush is adapted to be wiped. This movement will remove the excess paint from such brush and at the same time have the bristles thereof shaped into proper relationship with respect to each other. 15 and 16 provide a corner into which ends of the paint brush may likewise be scraped and shaped.

While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. 1, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:

1. A brush scraper and shaper for paint cans comprising an elongated flat strip of material, said strip having at each end thereof diverging end portions with the extremities thereof bent laterally with respect thereto and providing depending outside legs, said diverging end portions adjacent their line of junction with said strip providing depending inside legs spaced from said outside legs and adapted to embrace therebetween the top contour of said paint can to vertically dispose said strip in spanning relation to the open top thereof.

2. A brush scraper and shaper for paint cans comprising an elongated flat strip of material, said strip having at each end thereof diverging end portions with the extremities thereof bent laterally with respect thereto and providing depending outside legs, said diverging end portions adjacent their line of junction with said strip providing depending inside legs spaced from said outside legs and adapted to embrace therebetween the top contour of said paint can to vertically dispose said strip in spanning relation to the open top thereof, and means provided by said depending inside legs for preventing vertical displacement of said brush scraper and shaper from said paint can.

A brush scraper and shaper for paint cans comprising an elongated flat strip of material, said strip having at each end thereof diverging end portions with the extremities thereof bent laterally with respect thereto and providing depending outside legs, said diverging end portions adjacent their line of junction with said strip providing depending inside leg s spaced from said outside legs and adapted to embrace therebetween the top contour of said paint can to vertically dispose said strip in spanning relation to the open top thereof, said depending inside legs provided with lateral extensions extending in a parallel plane with respect to said diverging end portions for preventing displacement of said brush scraper and shaper from said paint can.

A brush scraper and shaper for paint cans comprising an elongated fiat strip of material, said strip having at each end thereof diverging end portions with the extremities thereof bent laterally with respect thereto and providing depending outside legs,said diverging end portions adjacent their line of junction with said strip providing depending inside legs spaced from said outside legs and adapted to embrace therebetween the top contour of said paint can to vertically dispose said strip in spanning relation to the open top thereof, said depending inside legs provided with laterally extending hook portions for engagement with a portion of said can to prevent'displacement of said brush scraper and shaper therefrom.
