The present invention relates to switch control pendants provided with a luminous or glowing substance, such as that commonlycalled radium luminous material, and, more particularly, to improved means for-joiningthe component parts and entrapping the radium emanations.
It has been the general practice heretofore to leave one end of a radium luminous painted pendant open, thus exposing the luminous paint, or to so'poorlyenclose the luminous paint as to permit escape of the emanations and thereby to decrease the luminous efficiency. Furthermore,
luminouspainted surfaces exposed to the atmosphere are'more or less rapidly coated with foreign particles, depending upon location and conditions, thereby to reduce the luminous efliciency.
Therefore, one of the objects of this invention is to completely enclose the section within the for concentrated illumination and a milky tran'slucent plastic material to provide an overall even- 1y diffused luminosity.
Still another object is to provide a pendant shaped to simulate a conventional incandescent lamp design expressive of luminosity, this same shape also utilitarian feature of providing excellent finger grip.
A still further object is to provide a pendant shaped and designed to simulate a fluorescent tube also expressive of luminosity and being convenient to the grasp.
Also, other important objects of the invention are to provide a pendant of good efl'iciency; simple in structure; of a nature to receive a trade-mark or insignia; long in life; pleasing in size and contour; free from liability of accidental loss of luminous paint or painted section; and easy to' attech to an electric switch cord or the like.
Other and more specific objects of the invention will become apparent from a consideration of the following specification and claims in connection with the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention by way of example, in which:
Fig. 1 is an enlarged view in side elevation of a pendant embodying the invention in one of its forms;
Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but drawn approximately to actual size;

'I' he pendant I0 shown by Fig. 1 of the drawing, embodies the invention in an illustrative form and comprises an outer housing H, which is of any suitable transparent or translucent material such as glass or plastic composition having a threaded section I2 on the small diameter end simulating a lamp base which could be brass lacquered or painted. A longitudinal hole l4 passes'through' the entire length, having different diameters, the smallest diameter l5 being near the top end to receive with tension the split locking cup l6 attached to the bead chain l1. The cup 16 is split, as indicated at 20, to facilitate installation. The next larger diameter l8 receives and 22 receive, cemented in place, the separate plastic cr -glass translucent or transparent plug 23 (Fig. 3) after having its surface 24 coated with radium luminous paint. Being of plastic the base of the plug 23 can be imprinted with an insigma, trade-mark, name, or other wording if desired. Plug 23 is provided with a center hole 28 permitting an optional method of painting the inside of the hole 28 with luminous paint, or depositing a radium active luminous powder within this hole 28 sealed into position with a cemented in plastic plug 30 (Fig. l). A plug which is substantially the length of the bore section 22 can be used if the inside 21 of the hole within the plastic housing were itself painted with radium luminous material.
The invention shown by Fig. 1 of the drawing may be embodied in a pendant housing 35 (Fig. 4) having a small diameter section 36 to receive, clinched into position, a threaded metal cap 38 to which is fastened a bead chain 39 by means of a larger diameter split ball, for example, within the cap 38. As shown in Fig. 4, an optional split metal cup 4|, split as indicated at 42, for locking the bead chain 39 within the cap 38 may be used.
The longitudinal central hole, corresponding to the hole I4 of Fig. 1, within the housing 35 does not extend throughout but is only of sufllcient length to accommodate a luminous coated plug have the small diameter end 36 of outer housing II or 35 (Figs. 1 and 4, respectively) threaded to,
receive the threaded metal cap 38 threaded on and staked in position if desired toprevent accidental unthreading. v
The invention shown by Fig. 5 of the drawing may be embodied in a pendant comprising an outer housing 52 which is ofany suita'bletransparent or translucent material such as; glass or plastic composition having a hole 53 running completely through to receive a glass orplastic rod 54 coated on the outside surface 54:; with radium luminous material ,cementedand sealed in position with plastic, plugs; 56 (one of which appears in Fig. 5) at each end of the hole 53. Both ends 5.! of the outer housing 52 are formed. with an undercut 58 to receive the metal caps -59 clinched in position, the top. cap having the bead chain 62 locked into position with a split washer 64 shown separately in Fig. 6.,
The plastic material of the outer housings ll, 35, and 52 circumscribi-ng the inner luminous coated sections, being convex in .form, provide magnification and consequently better luminous visibility. j
The invention claimed is:
1. A marking (pendant for an electriofswit'ch operating cord comprising,v a body composed of light-transmitting material, said body being provided With an aperture extending inward-1y and axially from one of its. ends, said aperture having,
a wide-diameter portion located adjacent-to said .end, a plug of light-transmitting material socuredin said apenture, said plug being provided with a tubular; shank portion of less diameter thanthe wide diameter :portion of the aperture, said shank portion bearing a coating of lumishank at one end of the same, said head being in cup-shaped form and including an annular wall portion spaced from and surrounding a portion of the luminescent-coated shank, the head having a diameter closely fitting Within the Wide-diameter portion of the aperture, said head having a rounded outer surface extending over one end of the shank, said surface being exp sed on the outside of the body and followingthe curvature of adjacent surrounding portions of the body.
2. A marking pendant for an electric switch operating cord comprising, a body of light-transn escent material, an integral .head .iormed on the mitting material shaped to simulate the appearance of an electric light bulb, said body having a iobular end portion, and having an axially extending bore provided with a wider-diameter portionat the end of the globular part of the body, a plug having a cylindrical head portion of a diameter enabling it to snugly fit within the widerdiameter portion of the bore, said head being of cup-shaped formation and including eta-annu r Wall, the head being provided with, a -central shank extending from itsconcave tside-into the bore, the periphery of the shank being, surrounded P vfor a portion of its length by the annular wall Ioi the head but spaced from said wal-L said plug being provided with a luminescent coating- A marking pendant as provided .fori-n claim 2, wherein the shank is hollow and the luminescent coating, isv contained on theinside of the shank, said shank being, provided with a closure plug; at one of its ends said head having a rounded, outer closed end arcuately. eurvedto sollow'the curvaturesoi the globular portion of the body 7 v 1 JOSEPH A.
