In incandescent lamps of this type known hitherto the base of the lamp is mounted to the neck portion of the bulb, and consequently it has not been possible to produce a lamp having a narrow bulb and a small base. This has proved to be of great disadvantage when wishing to manufacture lamps having a shape reminiscent of a candle flame. Such a configuration means that the bulb must terminate relatively abruptly, remote from the base, and the lamp present a free contour adjacent a narrow neck portion, simulating the wick of a candle, and the bulb connection should not be visible to the eye. Furthermore, it is desirable to obtain a darker core at the lower portion of the bulb, so that it obtains the natural character of a flame. This has been impossible to provide in incandescent lamps known hitherto.
The object of the present invention is to solve the aforementioned problem, and to provide an incandescent lamp which when illuminated has the appearance of a candle flame. This object is fulfilled by means of the incandescent lamp of the invention which is mainly characterized in that the base is connected to the pumping stem, which thus connects the base with the bulb which is located at a distance therefrom.
The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing, where FIG. 1 is a vertical view of an electric incandescent lamp according to the invention in enlarged scale, and
FIG. 2 is a vertical view of another embodiment of the incandescent lamp of theinvention.
FIG. 3 is an enlarged view of a portion of the lamp of FIG. 2.
The incandescent lamp shown in the figures comprises a bulb l, a base 2, a glass flare 3, a filament 4, a pumping stem 5 for evacuating the bulb during manufacture, and electrical conductors 6 and 7 which connect the base to the filament. The pumping stem opens out into the bulb through an orifice 8 in the glass flare. The filament is supported by a support member 9, the free end of which abuts the inside of the bulb.
In accordance with the invention, the base 2 is connected direct to the pumping stem 5 instead of to the bulb. In this way it is possible to make the base very small, as shown in FIG. 2
or, as shown in FIG. 1, a standard base can be fitted and a narrow neck portion obtained between the bulb and the base.
Further, the bulb can be made long and narrow, to present a candle flamelike fon'n without a visible attachment to impair the appearance. As the base is not secured in the bulb, the bulb and the glass flare extend freely around the pumping stem towards the base. To enhance the candle flarnelike appearance, the pumping stem can be surrounded above the base by an insulating sleeve 10, which, for example, can be darkly colored to simulate in the embodiment of FIG. 1 a candlewick, and in the embodiment of FIG. 2 the dark core flame.
The sleeve also surrounds the electrical conduits and thus also forms a protective cover for the same. In the embodiment of FIG. 2 the base can also be darkly colored to give the impression of a wick. In both exemplary embodiments, the glass flare can be darkly colored, to simulate the dark core flame.
The embodiment of FIG. 1 is intended for standard fittings for Christmas tree illuminations etc., and is therefore provided with a standard base. The embodiment of FIG. 2 is intended for chandelier lighting with a special base, which can also be movably arranged to simulate the fluttering of a candle flame.
I claim:
1. An electric incandescent lamp including a filament, a glass flare, a bulb connected to said flare and surrounding said filament, a base, a pumping stem for evacuating the bulb during manufacture and electrical conductors connecting the base and the filament, wherein the base is fixed to one end of the pumping stem and the glass flare is mounted on the pumping stem at a point spaced from the base whereby the pumping stem provides the connection between the base and the glass flare, so that the lamp provides an illusion of a wick with a flame when the lamp is on.
2. A lamp is claimed in claim 1, including a sleeve arranged between the base and the bulb and surrounding the pumping stem and the electrical conductors.
3. A lamp as claimed in claim 2, wherein the sleeve is colored dark to simulate the wick or the dark core flame.
4. A lamp as claimed in claim I, wherein the glass flare is colored dark to simulate the dark core flame.
5. A lamp as claimed in claim 2, wherein the sleeve is an insulating sleeve.
6. A lamp as claimed in claim 5, wherein said bulb is substantially conically shaped and said glass flare is substantially cylindrically shaped.
Claims (6)
1. An electric incandescent lamp including a filament, a glass flare, a bulb connected to said flare and surrounding said filament, a base, a pumping stem for evacuating the bulb during manufacture and electrical conductors connecting the base and the filament, wherein the base is fixed to one end of the pumping stem and the glass flare is mounted on the pumping stem at a point spaced from the base whereby the pumping stem provides the connection between the base and the glass flare, so that the lamp provides an illusion of a wick with a flame when the lamp is on.
2. A lamp is claimed in claim 1, including a sleeve arranged between the base and the bulb and surrounding the pumping stem and the electrical conductors.
3. A lamp as claimed in claim 2, wherein the sleeve is colored dark to simulate the wick or the dark core flame.
4. A lamp as claimed in claim 1, wherein the glass flare is colored dark to simulate the dark core flame.
5. A lamp as claimed in claim 2, wherein the sleeve is an insulating sleeve.
6. A lamp as claimed in claim 5, wherein said bulb is substantially conically shaped and said glass flare is substantially cylindrically shaped.
