In Spain April 30, 1943 The present specification relates to an automatic lock for doors, windows, and the like.
This lock may include two automatic catches; one fixed to the upper and the other to the lower part of the door or the like, and a locking element in the central portion of one of the wings of the door or the like, whichcatches into the element in the central portion of the opposite wing.
Each of these automatic catches is composed of: an assembly bolt, conveniently fixed to the frame of the door or the like; a semi-tubular catch, the inside of which is fitted with a spiral spring, to hold same in such a position that it will not catch into the bolt; and an exterior flap which revolves with said bolt in such a way that, upon closing the other wing, it applies force to said flap, thereby obliging the catch to fall into position and link into the corresponding bolt.
Any suitable number of these catches can be applied, as this is in accordance to the requirements of every individual case, however the operation of these is always affected by the central catch, which in this present construction has also been considerably improved upon, as it comprises two parts, one of these being similar (or, should need be, larger) to that which is provided with the bolt and forms the catch; and the other, which is a simple lever with a hollow shaft (the upper half 'of which forms a semi-tubular catch),
which, when revolving in a downward sense, ef-
fects either the closing or the opening of the door or the like.
The automatic locks are variable as regards to the size, the materials used for their manufacture, and the details of organization, etc., and in general, everything that is accessory and secondary is also variable, provided that the essence of the invention is not altered. On the sheet of drawings hereto attached, the lock, as a whole, is shown by way of illustration only and for the better comprehension of the invention and the mode of working the same.

I v In Fig. 1, the fasteners shown at the bottom and top of-the doors comprise, as illustrated in more detail in Figs. 2, 4 and 7, a retaining piece I which is fastened to the door with screws 3. This retaining piece is formed with a wall extending about a hollow cylindrical space, the axis of the cylinder being parallel to the door face. Within the hollow space of said retaining piece and fitted thereto to berotated upon the axis of the cylinder is the hollow cylindrical sleeve 5. The cylindrical portion of the retaining piecein the particular embodiment illustrated as in Fig. 4 extends over the casing when the door is in closed position. This portion of the retaining piece is provided with an opening 4 on the side I thereof toward the door through which, as the door is brought to closed position, a stud I may pass, this stud being fastened by means of angle bracket! and screws in to the casing of the door. The sleeve 5 adjacent the lower end thereof also is cut away to provide an opening 6 which, when in register with the opening 4 of the retaining piece I, will permit the stud 1 to pass into the hollow space within both the retaining piece and the sleeve.
When the right-hand door is about to reach the closed position illustrated in Figs. 2 and 4, the stud 1 may pass through the registering openings 4 and 6. When the door is in fully closed position, the sleeve 5 may be rotated upon its axis to bring the uncut portion 8 thereof behind the stud, thus to fasten the door to the casing. This rotation of the sleeve may be effected by a handle, such as the handle l2 shown in Fig. 8, connected to the sleeve and extending through a slot 14 in the wall of the retaining piece.
As shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4, the sleeve may be provided with a rod l6 fastened to the sleeve 5 and extended through slot 18 in the retaining iece I. The slot I8 is formed in a portion of the retaining piece which extends perpendicularly to the door face and the rod i6 is limited in its movement by the end of the slot l8 so as to take the position shown in Fig. 3 for engagement by the left-hand door as it approaches the closed position. Upon such an engagement when the left-hand door closes the rod l6 will take the position shown in Fig. 2, the sleeve 5 having been rotated approximately 90 from the position shown in Fig. 3. As may be seen in Fig. 6 the uncut portion 8 of the sleeve end is thus rotated from the position of Fig. 5 to a position approximately 90 therefrom to effect the looking as above mentioned. i I
A spring is inserted in the sleeve and engages the retaining piece so as to bias the sleeve to the position shown in Fig. 3. and 6 then will be in register and the right-hand door may be closed, the stud lentering the hollow space within the sleeve and the retaining piece: Engagement of the rod 16 by the v left-hand door thereafter will rotate the sleeve against the bias of its spring. This spring upon opening of the left-hand door will return the rod to the position shown in Fig. 3 and release the stud 1 from the condition of being locked by the sleeve 5.
It will be apparent from a consideration of Fig. 8 that as the left-hand door closes the stud may enter the space. Within the sleeve 2! and 11e taining piece 29 when the handle I2 is moved downwardly in the slot. I4 to rotate the sleeve. 21 to register its. opening. with the opening of the re taim'ng piece 29. After the left-hand door is. closed against. the right-hand door the handle I 2 may then be moved upward to the position Shown in Fig. 8 and the sleeve 21 will pass behind stud. 25. to lock. the left-hand door to the righthand. door- As. the right door is locked by the fastener at top and bottom thereof as above described both. doors are locked to the casing.
The form of sleeve. illustrated in Figs. 9, 10 and 11 functions in the same manner as does the sleeve 5 of Figs. 27, inclusive; the laterally projecting, finger 3.l performing the samefunotion as does the rod l6 of sleeve 5 above described.
This form of lock eliminates. the use ofcentrali grooves as locking-stops, which are. employed in other systems of locks.
The correct operation of the lock can easily be understoodby means of the corresponding drawings and. description, as laid down in this specification.
I claim:
A fastener for hinged door constructions and.
The openings Q 4 the like which comprises a stud fastened to the casing of said door construction with its length parallel to the casing face, a hollow retaining piece fastened to the door and providing a cylindrical wall having an opening in the side thereof which is toward the door face, the axis of the cylinder being parallel to the door face, said opening being. formed to receive said stud within the hollow space of said piece when said door is closed, a hollow cylindrical sleeve concentric with and retained within said retaining piece and rotatable therein on said axis, said sleeve having a lateral opening which may be rotated to register with said opening in said piece to permit said stud 1 toententhehol-low space of said sleeve and of pass-about said stud upon rotation of said sleeve within. said retaining piece so as to lock said door to said casing, a projecting finger attached to said sleeve. and arranged to engage a member of the door construction upon relative closing move.- ment of said door and said member to effectv rotation of said sleeve on said axis to locksaid door, and means. to bias said sleeve against said rotation to release said stud. upon reverse relative: movement of said door and said member.
