. A UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID H. JARRARD, OF TALLADEGA, ALABAMA.
GATE.
SPECIFICATION formnglpart of 'Letters Patent No. 244,611, dated July 19, 1881.
'Ap'pncat'in filed May-1,1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, DAVID'H. JARRARD, of Talladega,in the county of Talladega and State of Alabama, have invented a new and valuable Im provement in Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the ,construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed.
drawings', making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of side view of myimproved gate. Fig.v 2 is a top or plan view of the same, and Figs. 3 and 4L are detail views.
This inventionv has relation to turning and sliding gates; and it consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the recessed supporting-post and its hooks, the hinge plates or boards, center roller, and end eyebolts also, in connection therewith, the rolling latch and drop-latch, arranged at opposite ends of the gate, and the slotted lock-pate, all as hereinafter shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings, the letters A A designate the end gate-posts which carry the latches, and B is the supporting hingepost, arranged between the end posts, and
' usually a little nearer one than the other. It
' are formed in the inner corner of the post B oblique] y, and in these recesses are the oblique hooks b b, which are turned toward each other,
the upper hook being turned down and thev lower hook upward. By this construction the hooks or hinge-pintles are brought as near as possible to the center of the post B.
The gate C is constructed ot' horizontal .bars c c and uprights d d,and is provided with a roller-hinge, D, which is formed of side plates e, perforated at the center to form journalbearin gs for the journals of the roller E, which is designed to fit between the middle bars, c', of the gate, said bars passing between' the side plates or boards, e, of the hinge-body. At their ends the plates or boards e are perforated for the passage of the eyebolts g, which are provided with washers h and'nuts k, and serve to secure the parts of the hinge together, and
being engaged with the hooks b as the hingeeyes, whereby the gate is connected to the post B, and on which the gate depends in turning. The upright d is arranged near, but at one side ot', the middle of the gate, as shown in the drawings, and serves as a stop to prevent the.
gate from being pulled-far from its point of balance in sliding it forward for turning on its hinge.
The rear gate-post, A, is provided with a rolling latch, l, consisting of a sleeve having a cylinder-body, on which the gate-bar bears, and a conical end, a, which serves as. a stop and inclined plane, said sleeve being pivoted on the pin p, which is secured in the gatepost. v n
F is a vhorizontally-slotted lock-plate, which is designed to slide on a pin or screw, q, secured to the upright d ot' the gate, and rests by its lower edge on the lowermostof the bars, c. Between this lock-plate. and the upper bar, c', which rests on the roller-latch, is a space sufcient only for the cylinder portion of said latch, so that when the lock-plate is pushed forward or into the gate it will pass under said latch and behind its conical head a, and will prevent the gate from being lifted to unlatch it at this end. When the slide-plate F is pushed in the opposite direction it passes from under the roller-latch, so that the gate can be lifted. At the other end of the gate -is secured rigidly an upturned hook, c, which projects beyond the-end of the gate, to enter, when the gate is closed, a recess, w, in the front gate-post,
A', across the face of which extends the lower 'gate only it moves on the hinge-roller and roller-latch. When the wide portion of the gateway is to be used the rear end of the gate is lifted oft' the roller-latch. This action depresses the hook e and unlatches the front end IOO of the gate, so that it can be readily turned on the hooks b b to extend at right angles to the gateway.
Having described this invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s
l. The combination, withthe gate-post I?, having the recess a and oblique hooks b turned toward each other, of the horizontal gatebars c', and the perforated hinge plates or. boards c, center roller, E, eyebolts g, and nuts k, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with a sliding gate and its middle hinge, D, of the roller-latch Z at one end, and the drop-latch G and upturned hook v at the other end, substantially as specified.
