IMPROVEMENT'. In FARM-earns.
` ro ALL WHOM rr MAY conciliant:r
'Be it known that I', CHRISTIAN RICH, of Marshallsville, in the coun ty of Wayne, and State'of Ohio, have invented new4 and useful. Improvements in yllarm-Grates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, andexact description of my invent-ion, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings, forming a part 'of this specification, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, of which drawings- Figure l is a perspective view` of my improved gate. Figure 2v is a side view of the latch-post for said gate.
rFigure 3 is a view showing the arrangement of notch'on latchlplate and wheel on end of latch.
Figure 4 is a plan of gear for operating the gate.
The-nature. of my invention consists in the peculiarcombination of devices for opening and closingafarm gate, said devices consisting of a sliding bar with gear on -the side of it, whichacts in combination with the gear on" the gatcepost, and opens and shuts said gate, and with a metal-plate attachment, which has a depression made on the under side of it', andjwhich, acting in combination with a .wheel on the end of the gate-latch, unlatches the gate when it is to be opened.- The aforesaid sliding bar being operated by' levers at Athe ends,
which-are so arranged thatl the gate can be opened or closed without getting out of the carriage, the whole being Y very cheap and simple, sure in its operations, and not liable to getoutof repair.
, To lenable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its'construction and operation. v
`The gate is of a common form, being constructed of bars G and H, rails I I, and brace R, as shown, and is hung on the gate-post B, as shown in tig. 1', or in any other suitable manner. The gate-latch K is made of a strip of wood or iron, and is hung by a bolt, a, between the pieces vL Il, which are secured to the rails I I, as shown. l
The front end of this latch works up and down in the slot Q in the gate-bar H, and catches in the notch l? in the lower part of the notch 0in the latch-post C, while lthe other end of said latch projects through the slot Qin the gate-bar G, and has the wheel R arranged 'on it, as shown.
"The-sliding bar E slides in a notch in the gate-post B, and isoperated by the levers F F, the ends of which set in holes in the bar E, as shown, and to which they are attached by bolts b c, which pass through holes in*- these'levers, the'levers being pivoted to the posts A A bybolts ff, as shown.
This sliding bar E has the rack-gear M fastened on the side of it, which gears into the portion of a gearwheel, N, on thelgater-bar Cavas shown in lig. 1, and in vdotailin iig. 4.
The metal-plate attachment D is bolted on the bar E, as shown, and has a depression, d, on the lower side' of it, which, whenfthe gate is shut, sets over the wheel R on the end of the latehK, as shown in figs. 1 and 3;
The operation'of my gate is asfollows: i i
When 'the gateis closed and is to be opened, one of the levers, F, ispulled to .or from the gate, according to whether the gate is' to be opened from or toward the operator. y v
The teeth on the rack M and .pinion N are made so as to have a little play, as shown yin fig'. 4, thus allowA ing of a small sliding motion of the bar E, before the gate is acted on.
This sliding 'of lthe bar E causes a sliding of the plate D, and, by the action of the notch d, presses down.
the wheel'R on the end of the latch- K under said notch, and raises'the other end ofsaid latch from the notch P in the latchpost C, thus unlatching the gate.A
' The'bar E, which carries the rack-gear M, being caused to slide by the action of the lever F, acts on the glear N on the gate-bar G, and forces the gate to swing open.
By reversing the action of said lever F, the gate will be closed, and `the end of the latch K sliding up theinclined'faces of the lower part of the notch O in the latch-post C, will drop into the notch P, and thus latch Athe gate.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The Iiecular arrangementand combination of the gate G I H, gaite-post B, gate-latch K, whel R, latchplate D, sliding bar E, rack and pinion -M N, levers F F, and lever-posts A A, the sqveml patwbing arranged and combined in the ma'nnex and for the purposes specified. i l v i As evidexice that I claim the foregoing,` I- have hreunto set my` hand in. the presgnc of two witnesses, this 12th dayof March, A. D. 1868. v
' CHRISTIAN RICH.
