J. G. MULLER. DRAUGHT MECHANISM FOR OHIMNEYS 110. 244,472. Patented July 19,1881.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB G. MIILLEB, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
DRAFT MECHANISM FOR CHIMNEYS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,472, dated July 19, 1881.
Application filed January 13, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JACOB G. Mi'ILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, county of Erie, and State of New York, have made new and useful Improvements in Steam Devices for Improving the Draft in Chimneys, of which the following isa specification.
This device is mainly for large establishments that use steam. I It is set into chimneys, (not ash-pits,) especially where fire under boil ers is used for making steam, or in breweries, 850.; and the invention consistsin the general construction of the device and its arrangement in a chimney, as hereinafter fully explained, and set forth in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section through a chimney, showing the arrangement of the single device therein; Fig. 2, a plan of a double one, the chimney in crosssection.
A represents the chimney. B is the steampipe, having an elbow outside, which projects longitudinally in to the chimney, and there has another pipe or bracket attached thereto, with one, two, or three arms branching therefrom so as to partly fill the space in the chimney, as plainly shown in Fig. 2, which is of a large size, while Fig. 1 shows one of smaller construction and of a single instead of a double branch pipe, 0, inside. This pipe B is only one-fourth inch, (in the chimney,) and has (see Fig. 1) steam points or openings a a therein, of small bore on its upper surface, the end of the pipe being closed.
plan, Fig. 2,) which have short pipes d d screwed thereon. These are for air and steam, leaving a space of about one and one-half inch above the steam-points a a and below the bottom of the pipes 12. Exhaust or live steam will be used, which will be turned on or off as a draft is or is not required.
This device willbe placed in achimney some ten feet (more or less) above the fire, and with the door of the ash-pit open, and with or without a damper. The chimney may be either low or high, as it will work equally well in either.
I am aware that steam-blowers have been used in situations similar to mine; but these have a number ofjets underone common flue, and 1 do not claim such.
I claim- The herein-described draft device for chimneys, consisting of the steam-pipe B, having the openings at a, the branch bracket-pipe 0, having the T-pieces b b, and short pipes d d, arranged as set forth, one directly over each opening .64, all constructed and arranged as shown, and for the purpose herein set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JACOB Gr. MULLER.
Witnesses J. R. DRAKE, H. A. BENTLIP.
