' DEVICE FOR INGREASINGDRAFT. No; 245,143.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN DEMANGEOT, OF LANCASTER, NEW YORK.
DEVICE. FOR INCREASING DRAFT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentjNo. 245,143, dated August 2, 1881. Application filed April s, 1851. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN DEMANGEOT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have made certain Improvements in Devices for Increasing the Draft under Grates, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the arrangement of the exhaus't-steam-feeding pipes in connection with the steam-discharge pipe, (set under the grate,) the object of such arrangement being to get dry steam as near as possible, and, by operating it with the ash-pit door open, get a combination of air and steam to improve the draft, blow away theashes from the coals to the back of the ash-pit, and improve the burning of poor or any fuel, all as hereinafter explain'ed.
In the drawing the figure is a side elevation orview of the device in connection with a grate and boiler, partly shown.
A represents a portion of one end of a boiler; B, the front ends of the grate under the same; and O, the single exit steam-pipe, set only a few inches below the grate and near the front end of the same, and provided with a series of steam openings or holes, a a a, as many or few as needed, and as this pipe screws into the elbow-joint b it can be set so as to throw the steam straight or slanting, the latter being preferable, so as to throw it the entire length of the grate.
The steam usually will be the exhaust'from the cylinder D, which will be taken through the main exhaust-pipe E,then by a pipe, G, which runs as far as required; but instead of being united in a direct line with the steameseape C under the grate, it is set at right angles by an elbow, c, downward, making a vertical pipe,cl, and, with ajoint or elbow, c, attached to a horizontal pipe, 0, forming the hot- 7 tom of a crook, F. The pipe e-is joined to another elbow,c, then to another vertical pipe,
a, corresponding to d. This is joined to the elbow b. This makes the entire crook F, the object being todrop all the water in the ex- 'pit door closed.
haust-stea n and all condensatidns in the pipes into the lower pipe, 0, where it will be drawn off by the faucetf. By this arrangement when the steam reaches the pipe 0 under the grate it is dry, and is therefore much more effective.
When it is desired to shut off the exhaust from the grate a valve, h, in pipe G. is employed, and this is also used to regulate the flow of steam, the full force beingused or only a portion, as the draft is light or strong. The
.valve 9, in the main steam-escape pipeE, is
set above the exhaust-pipe G, so as to shutoff steam above pipe G or to open and exhaust out into the air when no steam is desired for little water gets into pipe 0 is drawn ofi at pipe is. A
I believe, usually, that devices for iinprow ing draft of'grates by steam are with the ash- Mine is with it open, by which I get the necessary air to unite with the exhaust-steam.
Of course live steam can be used; but my arrangement is more especially adapted for using the exhaust-steam.
I am aware that exhaust-steam has been used for the same purpose; but I believe I am the first so to arrange the conducting'pipes, and in connection with a single exit-pipe, C, so placed.
I claim- In combination with the single steam-pipe 0, having perforations a a a, set immediately under the front of grate B, and adjustable by the elbow-joint b, the attached crook, consisting of pipes d (1 e, elbow-joints b c o 0, exhaust-pipe Gr, regulating-valve h, and faucet f, all arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
- I JOHN DEMANGEOT.
