PATENT FFICE.
CHARLES H. LOVRIEN, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
Pl PE-TONGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,269, dated July 12, 1881.
Application filed April 25, 1881.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLES H. LOVRIEN, of Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Tongs; and I do hereby declare that thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pipe-tongs patented to me November 9,1880; and it consists in the construction and arran gement of parts, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 3 y. Fig. 3 is a side view. Fig.4is a section on the line a: :10, and Fig. 5 is a detail.
Like letters indicate like parts.
A B represent the jaws of the tongs. The jaw A is provided with a flanged lug, O, in the upper end of which is a recess, a, for the reception of the cube 0, and in the bottom of this recess is a boss, b, that may be round, square, or of any suitable form, and serves as a bearing for the cube, to prevent its bottoming at theg'edges and allow it sufficient play to compensate .for any slight irregularity in the adjustment of the jaws. By this means the cube is enabled to bite the object more surely, and thus affords greater assistance to the jaws in securingandretaining afirm gripe. The cube 0 is held in place by a pin, a.
At the lower end of the lug O is a flange, d, which is perforated for the passage of, a hotpressed double-headed rivet, D, which passes through anelongated slot, e, in the jaw B, the
(No model.)
two jaws being thus secured together, so as to have an adjustment upon each other, by
means of a screw, E, that works in the slotted or mortised portion of the jaw B. This screw may be provided with a thumb-nut, E, as shown in Fig. 2, or a thumb-screw, E may be employed, as shown in Fig. 3.
The shank of the rivet or pivot 1) may be either cylindrical or rectangular, in the latter case having, however, cylindrical ends, and forms a bearing for the end of the screw E, so that as the latter is moved forward the jaw A is brought to a closer adjustment upon the jaw B.
When the tongs are applied for griping, any irregularity in the adjustment is taken up by the loosely-fittin g cube 0, which rocks upon the boss b, so as to enable the'jaws to secure a firmer hold.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a pipe tongs, the combination, with the recessed lug 0, having boss b,of the loosefitting cube 0, substantially as specified.
2. in a pipetongs, the combination, with the flanged jaw A, having recessed lug 0, provided with boss I) and cube 0, of the slotted jaw B, double-headed rivet D, and adjustingscrew E, all constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES HARRISON LOVRIllN.
