This invention in general relates to improvements inmanifold or duplicating sales-booksof the kind described.

This application is a substitute for the application filed June ,13, .1936, bearing Serial Number 85,837, now abandoned.

The objects of the inventionare: the provision of a manifold sales .book of such constructionthat when checks and/or duplicates are placed therein a perfect alignment is permitted, thesaid checks being .firmly attached to the covers, thereby preventing shifting or sliding,.andan undesired flexibility which might causean imperfect record to .be transferred to the duplicate; the provision of a manifold sales book of a lighter and simpler construction by the elimination of needless metal parts, thus effecting a substantial reduction in the cost of manufacture; and the provision of an improved construction in a device of the character described having no metal parts exposed.

The invention will be best-understood by reference to the drawings, wherein-- Figure 1 is a plan view of an embodiment of the invention showing a manifo'ldsales book with cover open, the location of check :and duplicate holder, and the relative position of checks and duplicates;

Figure 2 is a side'view of the "invention showing the location of check and duplicate holder and the relative position of checks and duplicates;

Figure 3 is a transverse sectional view of the device disclosed in Figure 1, showing the duplicate holder, and relative position of checks and duplicates, with the book in closed position;

Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3 with the book in open position;

Figure 5 is a view similar to Figures 8 and 4 showing the upper member of duplicate holder in unclamping position;

Figure 6 is a plan view of an unfinished metal stamping out of which the check holder is formed;

Figure 7 is a view similar to Figure 6 showing the metal stamping folded upon itself to form the completed check holder;

Figure 8 is a fragmentary perspective view of the upper member of the triple hinged duplicate holder;

Figure 9 is a view similar to Figure 8 showing the center member of the duplicate holder; and

Figure 10 is a view similar to Figures 8 and 9 showing the lower hinge element of the duplicate holder.

With more particular reference to the drawings wherein similar reference numerals indicate corresponding parts in the several views of the preferred form of the invention, the numerals I and 2 designate the front and back of a manifoldsales book ;cover with a binder hinge in center to permit folding over of cover to which the check holder 3 and duplicate holder 4 are secured with originalchecks 5 andlduplica'tesfi arranged'thereon. The original checks and duplicates referred to are-of standardmanuiacture, the checks being plain pads with binder-board backs and wirestitched 50 .or .100 to a pad. The duplicates are ofrsimilar manufacture withtwo holes on left side of pad .to accommodate the prongs of the duplicate. holder, .a single sheet of carbon paper being attachedron-topof the duplicate pad for the purpose of superimposing the original impression on duplicate.

The duplicate holder, as bestshown in Figs. 8, 9 and :10, consisting of ..a..1o.wer or center body portion having two-prongs .and an integral hinged portion to whichtwocoa'cting hinged portions are secured in any suitable manner as by the pin .24, the parts last described being referred to more fully hereinafter.

Figures 1 and 2 show the location of check 1 holder 3 fastened to'cover-l with a rivet II! and the checks 5 fitted therein, and the duplicate holder 4 with the lower member -Il fastened to cover I with rivets l5 while duplicates are held firmly in position in duplicate holder 4.

Figures 3, 4 and 5 show bottom views of the duplicate back with duplicate holder 4 closed in Figure 3, open in Figure 4, and closed in Figure 5 with clamp 20 open and also shows upright pins or prongs [8 with a notch l9 provided so that when the clamp 20 is closed over the said pins 18, it functions as a snap fastener in such wise that when clamp 20 is closed over pins I8 it acts as a snap fastener so that when a pad of duplicates is placed in duplicate holder 4 it is held firmly in place. The holder 3 in Figure 7 which is for the original checks is made of a single strip of metal raised at both ends with two rivet holes I provided, the said metal holder being bent over at right angles as at 8, and then bent back on the sides leaving a space of approximately A; inch between the back and front part of holder. This permits the back binder board of the pad of checks 5 to be slipped in with ease, thereby holding the pad 5 firmly in place, the angle 8 acting as a stop to prevent checks 5 from slipping out once placed therein and allows no flexibility, sliding or shifting of the check.

Figures 8, 9, and 10 show the three parts of the duplicate holder 4. There is a central or body portion it formed of a plain sheet of metal suitably cut and folded at its edge to provide a hinge portion IT. The body portion is also provided with prongs I8 havin notches [9 which serve to hold the duplicates in position. A lower part II formed of a stamping substantially L- shape in cross section is provided with rivet holes I2 which serve to accommodate suitable fastening means such as the n'vets I for attachment to the cover I. The lower portion is also integrally formed with a hinge portion I3 provided on a substantially L-shaped body portion M. The third and upper portion of the duplicate holder 4 comprises a stamping substantially L- shaped in cross section having integrally formed hinge portion 2| and a flange 23 at an upper edge which latter coacts with the notch I9 in the prongs I8 in order to securely retain the pad of duplicates in operative position, as best shown in Figures 3 and 4. The hinge portions II, It and '20 described above, it will be observed, are coactingly arranged and held in operative mutual hinged relation by a pin 24, as mentioned above, a triplicate or three way hinge being achieved.

As best shown in Figures 1, 6 and 7, it will be observed that the metal stamping 3 which serves as the check holder, is fastened to the lower cover at a position where the duplicate holder can be conveniently applied thereto in the manner described above, the said stamping particularly lending itself to quantity production as an article of manufacture. Likewise the triple hinged duplicate holder is particularly adapted for quantity production at a substantial saving of material and cost.

In using the duplicate book which holds the original pad of checks 5 and the pad of duplicates 6 the cover is opened, and the duplicate holder 4 is raised, permitting access to checks 5, the check desired being'raised and the dupli- 40 '4 of necessity dropping in their predetermined places of alignment on the duplicate pad 6.

It will be observed that by reason of the design and construction employed any exposed or rough metal parts which might cause injury to the user are eliminated. This is an important feature since manifold sales books of the present type are frequently carried in the pockets of the waiters, who when busy reach hastily for the book and are often out or scratched by same when the metal parts are exposed.

Applicant is aware that the invention may be embodied in other specific forms without departing from the spirit of essential attributes thereof, and applicant therefore desires the present embodiments to be considered in all respects as illustrative and not restrictive, reference being bad to the appended claim rather than to the foregoing description to indicate the scope of the invention.

Iclaim:

A manifolding sales book of the character. described comprising in combination, a cover, a holder for checks fastened to the cover, a second holder for a pad of duplicates, said second holder including a main body portion, a hingeelement and duplicate positioning means fastened to the main body portion, a member having a pivoted connection to said hinge element and adapted to clampingly engage duplicates on the main body portion, a second hinge element fastened to the cover, and means to operatively join the first mentioned hinge element, the member and the second hinge element together.
