E. W. ANDREWS. ADJUSTABLE ROCKER.
' Patented July 12,1881.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD W. ANDREWS, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOROF ONE-HALF TO WILLIAM W. PETHERIOK, OF SAME PLACE.
ADJUSTABLE ROCKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 244,104, dated July 12, 1881,
Application filed March 23, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD W. ANDREWS, of Detroit, lVayne county, Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Adjustable Rockers, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of this invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of rockers which are removable and capable of adjustment upon ordinary chairs; and the invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of devices whereby such adjustment is obtained, all as more fully hereinafter set forth.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a chair provided with my improved adjustable rocker. Figs. 2 and 3 are details of construction of the clamp for securing the rocker to the chair.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A A represent rockers which are designed to be removably secured to the legs B of a chair. At or near the front end of each rocker I rigidly secure a proper casting, O, which is provided with the upwardly-proj ectin g stud D, preferably of the form shown. E is a sleeve, which fits upon the stud D, and is designed to be sufficiently large to receive the leg of any ordinary chair. F is a thumb-screw,which is threaded through one side of the sleeve E, theinnerend of which is intended to impinge against the back face of the stud D.
By this construction it will readily be seen that by the operation of the screw the sleeve and stud may be drawn toward each other and thoroughly clamp the leg of the chair which is between them, it being evident that the device will receive and clamp legs of various sizes.
The device for securing the rear legs is the same as that already described, with the exception that the plate 0 is made adjustable longitudinally upon the rocker. The accompanyin g drawings represent that such plate is susceptible of a longitudinal adjustment upon the rocker by slidingbetween the ways or guides a, which are rigidly secured upon the rocker. Thus it will be seen that chairs the legs of which are of different distances apart in their spread can readily be secured upon the rockers, and that any ordinary standing chair can be converted into a rocker, it being designed to give sufficient adjustment to the rear clamps to meet the various forms and sizes of chairlegs.
If desired, at the points where the clamps comein contact with'the legs there may beinterposed between them a rubber or other elastic cushion, which would prevent the marring of the leg, although ordinarily this would not be necessary.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. In combination with the rockerA and the plate 0, having a semi-cylindrical stud, D, the sleeve E and screw F, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with the sleeve E, screw F, and plate 0, having a stud, D, the guide plates at a, fastened to the rocker A, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
