nppnationiea aanuary si, 4,1925. serialV No. 6,113. c
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known-'that I, vGEORGE DEGHEFE, a citizen of the United States, residing at De- .troit, in the county 'of lVayne and Stateof Michigan, `have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Saw-Filing Machines, of which the .following is a' specification, reference being -had to the accompanying drawings. i Y 4 This invention relates to limproveiirents .in saw 'filing machines and itis an object of the invention to Aprovide a device of Athis kind embodying novel and improved means whereby the saw may be effectively held or clamped in desired position.
Another object of the `invention vis to provide a ynovel iandimpro'ved device of this 4general character Whichmay be adjusted in a manner wherebyl the file kor thelike may be adjusted in a direction substantially'tlie same as'the `line lof the toothed edgeoffthe saw blade.
The invention also has for kan object tov -provide a novel' and y improved :device of this kind including a holding or clamping structure together with `a Vcarrier slfidably` supported by said structure, the carrier being adapted tosupport .a saw 'file or other implement, together with .ineans for adjusting the carrier lin accordance with the spac device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenientand advantageous v for use, as will be'hereinafter more fully set forth.
rllhe novel features of my invention willA hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention Vmay ybe. .the
better understood, I will -now pro'ceedfto def scribe the sanie'with reference to the aocoinpanying dra-wings, wherein:-

As disclosed in Athe Vaccoinpaiiying.draw-f,
ings, .il :denotes ea base vj orefera'bly .of wood, and said base beingl relatively long .and .provided iat its opposite ends with theupstanding plates or lbrackets 2. v .An `elongated .rod

Resting upon .the upper Asurface -of the base l and extending along ha" lon'gitm'iinal marginal portion :thereof is a'nietallic me'ml` ber or strap .7 provided atl its opposite end.
yportions with the yd epe'nding,ilanges8. The member or strap Vmay be heldinfapplied position inlany desired manner but. as -liereing bolt 11 is adapted to begselectively en-- gaged in accordance with the size of the saw to bel filed, reset or the like.
Each of the clamping bolts 11 has slidably disposed through the head thereof an operating handle 14 to facilitate` effective manipulation of the clamping bolt.
In practice, the saw to be filed or the like has its toothed marginal portion inserted between the forward edge of the base 1 and the bar with the teeth upwardly disposed.
In order to assure the proper placing of the saw the Oau 'es 15 are arranved ad'acent the opposite ends of the member or strapr7, each of saidgauges 'being pivotally held to the member or strap 7 by a screw 16. When each of the gauges 15 is disposed in a direction lengthwise of the member or strap 7, the same is provided with a laterally div i'ected lug 17 which is adapted to bereceived accordance with the size of the saw.
between a pair of'adjacent teeth of the saw Vand thereby assure the requisite and desired placing of the saw. After the saw' has been properly placed and clamped by the bar 10, the gauges 15 are sprung inwardly into an inoperative position. i
It is to be noted that one end portion of the member or strap 7 is provided with a 4series of spaced threaded openings 1S with which the holding screw 16 `of one of the gauges 15 is adapted to be selectively engaged so that such gauge may be adjusted with respect to the member or strap 7 in The bar 10 is constantly `urged or forced outwardly by thecoil springs 19 interposed between the opposite end portions of the base 1 and the bar 10. These springs 19 are of such tension that when thev clamping bolts v 11 are retracted to effect a release of an applied saw, thejbar 1() may be automatically forced outwardly to facilitate such removal of the saw. I
' Mounted on the opposite end portions of the bar'10 outwardly of each ofthe bolts 11 and inwardly of, the'adjacent spring 19 is Va cuff or sleeve 20, the inner or interposed wall of which being ofV a thickness substantially equal to the thickness of the saw blade. By use of these sleeves or cuffs outbowing of the central portion of the bar 10 Ais avoided `when the clamping bolts 11 are tightened and thereby assuring a close contact of the bar 10 at all points along the saw to effecbolt 11 is adjusted lengthwise of vits flange 8 and the bar 10 it is to be understood that the adjacent cuff or sleeve 2O is correspondingly adjusted in order to maintain a maximum of efficiency.
The base 1, as herein disclosed, is provided adjacent its opposite ends with the clamps 21 of a well known type whereby said base may be effectively held to a workbench or the like.
As is well known, the toothed edges of new saws are generally Vdisposed on a slight outward curvature and in order to maintain such curvature when filing a saw it is of importance that the intermediate portion of the base 1 besprungL upwardly to an extent substantially equal to such curvature ofthe toothed edge of the saw. As herein disclosed, the base 1 adjacent the forwardlongitudinal marginal'portion-thereof is provided with a longitudinally directed groove or channel 22 in which is arranged an elongated nietallic strap 23 the extremities of which being slidably engaged, as at 24:, with the headed `holding members .25. Normally the strap 23 is entirely housed or confinedY if within the groove or channel 22 so that no till hinderance or obstruction is offered to the under surface of the base 1. However, when y it is desired to spring upwardlytheyintermediate portion of the base 1, the central Vpart of the strap 23 is forced outwardly to the extent desired. ln the present embodiment of my invention this is accomplished through the medium of the elongated screw 26 threaded inwardly from the rear through the base 1, the inserted end portion of the screw 26 being tapered, as at 27, for contact with the inclined wall 28 provided on the inner face of tlie'stra-p 23 and at preferably the longitudinal center thereof. As the screw 26 is forced inwardly, the central portion of the strap l23 will be moved outwardly and as the bolt or screw 26 is retracted, the inherent resiliency of the strap-23 will cause the same toV return `inwardly of the channel 22. f
Freely mounted on the rod 3 is a carrier C with which is adapted tobe attached .a le holder H or asaw set S. As herein disclosed, the carrier C comprises a barrel v23 snugly surrounding the rod 3 and to which is connected av plate 30 extending beyond opposite sides of the barrel 29V. The base block' 31 of the saw holder, as herein dis closed, has one end portion pivotally connected, as at 32, to the inner or rear end por,-
llO
tion of the plate 3() while the forward por- Y the plate 3 0 so the rholder "H in its ene t'i-rety maybe adjusted at desired anglewith respect tothe saw as the requiremerftsof practice may necessitate. f'
A detailed description of the fiile lrolder is not believed to be necessary as the same is 'fully 'described and illustrated in another application for patent executed on even date herewith.
The saw set S is substantially of a typek now generally in use and is attached only lto the forward or front end portion of the plate 30, said attached portion ofthe set being provided with a lug which extends within a notch 3G in the forward end marginal portion of the plate 30 whereby said setis held against lateral or side movement. i
As herein disclosed, the barrel 29 is provided with a latch mechanism 37 which is adapted to engage within a notch 6 so that the carrier C is maintained in a fix-ed posivtion during the period'the file holder H or the saw set S is in use. After one tooth has4 been operated upon it will be understood that the carrier C will be adjusted along the rod 3 to the next notch and as the vention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembledand 'operated, and it will also be obviousthat my invention is susceptible of somech'ange and modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason Ido not wish to vbe understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.l
