HACKSAW-FRAME.
Application filed June 25. 1919.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAx'ron J. MORGAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county ofGreen and State of isconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hacksaw-Frames, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in frames for holding hack saws, especially forjhand use, although a frame embodying the principles of my invention is also Well adapted to carry the saw in a power-driven sawing machine.
One of the objects of my invention is to provide quickly releasable clamping means whereby the saw can be tightly clamped in position or released and removed in an instant. 7
Another object of my inventionis to construct such a frame entirely out of sheet metal and bars without the use of any cast material.
Further objects and advantages of my invention will become apparent as the description proceeds.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a hack saw frame embodying the principles of my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectlon on the line 2-2 of Fi 1, and Fig. 3 is a perspectiveview of the s eeve for the rear bolt.
A device according to my invention comprises a handle, an arm telescopically mounted in said handle and two retaining bolts for the saw blade. In the embodiment of my invention selected for illustration the handle, designated as a whole by the reference character A, comprises a main U-shaped frame 10 formed by bending an H-shaped sheet horizontally along its center line to form a tubular portion 11 adapted to receive the arm B in sliding engagement. Each flap of the main rame is cut to the shape illustrated in Fig. 1, and the two flaps are held together throughout the hand grip by engagement between the handle pieces 12 which are clamped on by suitable screws 13 and throughout the front downward projection 14 by suitable rivets. to the main fram The arm B extends through the handle A forward and downward and carries a sleeve I 19 generally similar to the extension member 16 and adapted to embrace the front bolt C. Adjustment of the arm B over a considerable range is provided by a plurality of holes 20 drilled at intervals along the arm as shown in Fig. 1. A locking pin 21 carried by a leaf spring 22 is resiliently held by the said spring in the position shown in Fig. 2. The arm B may thus be locked in any one of a plurality of adjusted positions. A second and more precise adjustment is provided by an'adjustable mounting for the bolt C inthe sleeve 19. A'collar 23 carries a lug 24 engaging in a notch in the sleeve and is thus prevented from rotation. The collar carries a key slidably engaging in the slot 25 in the bolt C to restrain said bolt from rotation. Notches to receive the lug 24 are cut at ninety degree intervals in the sleeve 19 'for a purpose to be referred to'later. A nut 26 engaging the screw threads on the bolt C has ample bearing surface against the collar 23 to take the tension in the hack saw blade. A small locking nut 27 at the op osite end of the sleeve 19 holds the bolt in position when the blade is removed. The threaded portion of the bolt C is long enough to provide a range of adjustment substantially equal to the distance between adjacent holes 20. Exact adjustment of the position of the bolt C over the entire range is thus obtainable. Bolt C carries the usual pin 28 slightly inclined forwardly and the rear sliding bolt D carries a similar pin 29.
Quickly releasable clamping means are provided for drawing the bolt D back formed by the cylindrical portion of the extension to clamp and tension the hack saw blade. As shown the central portion of the sleeve 16 is cut away at the center leaving two loops 16". A sleeve 30 (see Fig. fits loosely within these loops for sliding axial movement. The sleeve 30 receives the rear bolt D which is prevented from sliding through the sleeve by a'small pin 31; notches 32 in the rear end of the sleeve 30 receive the pin 31 in any q in 31 in the slots adapt-ed to 'said cam.

. The pins 28 and 29 project from the flat sided semi-cylindrical ends of the bolts C and D respectively, and the ends of both bolts may be positioned in any one of four difierent positions by means of the pin 31 and lug 2 to allow the blade 39 to cut in the corresponding direction.
A compression spring 33 surrounding the sleeve D and engaging the faces of a shoulder 34 on the projecting front end of the bolt, and a washer 35, resiliently presses the bolt D forward and normally retains the 32. A lug 36 on the sleeve 30 formed by two pro ecting ears integral witli-Ithe cylindrical portion of the sleeve slides in the slot defined by the arms 18 of the projection 16. The front face of the lug 36 engages thesloping surface of a cylindrical cam 37 surrounding the sleeve 30 and restrained from endwise motion by engagement with the faces of the loops 16 The cam 37 carries a projecting lever 38 be manually engaged to rotate As illustrated in Fig. 2, the lever extends'on a line offset from the center of rotation of the sleeve so as to lie flat against the side of the handle member A. The'cam around its periphery and terminating in a flat portion adjacent the lever 38. The lever and cam are one integral pieceof material. In the position shown 1n Fig. 1, the lug 36 bears against the flat portion of the cam 37 and the tension of the blade 39 holds the parts securely in position by friction.
VViththe arm B and bolt C properly ad- 'iusted for. the length of blade being used, the blade can be removed from the saw by rotating the cam' lever 38 270 degrees'to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, allowing the spring 33 to-move the bolt D and sleeve 30 forward. This movement allows the'blade 39 to fall freely off the inclined pins 28 and- 29 and a new blade may be laid "over them and quickly stretched to the desired tension by returning the cam lever 38 to its locking position.
An advantageous feature ofmy construction, especially with regard to the cost of production and to the durability and service, is that no castings are used in any part of my device. The two bolts C and D can 'be'readily machined from rolled rods and.

I claim as my inventionv 1. A hack saw having, in combination, a frame, a fixed bolt and a slidable bolt carried by said frame, means on said bolts for engaging the ends of the hack saw blade, quickly releasable clamping means for sliding said slidable bolt, and resilient means urging said slidable bolt into position to release said blade.

In a hack saw? frame, a one piece handle member and bolt support member comprising a single piece of sheet metal cut 120 to an H shape, and folded horizontally along the center line of the cross piece of longitudinally 'spaced130 I loops, a sleeve slidable in said loops, a lug on said sleeve projecting between said walls to restrain said sleeve from rotation, an an nular cam encircling said sleeve and slidably engaging said loops, said cam being adapted to engage said lug, and means for rotating said cam.
8. In a device of the class described, in combination, longitudinally extending spaced parallel Walls, a pair of longitudinally spaced loops joining the lower edges of said. walls, a bolt slidable in said loops, projecting means carried by said bolt and engaging between said walls, and a rotatable annular cam encircling said bolt between said loops and adapted to engage said projecting means to slide said bolt.
9. In a hack saw frame, in combination, a handle member, an arm telescoping in the upper portion of said handle member, the rear end of said arm being cut at an angle, to conform to and prolong the contour of the rear edge of said handle member.
10. A device of the clas described comprising a handle, a bolt for engaging one end of a hack saw blade, a sleeve on said bolt having slidable engagement in said handle, means to prevent rotation of said sleeve relative to said handle comprising a lug on said sleeve arranged to engage in a slot in said handle, a pin in said bolt projecting radially therefrom, a plurality of notches provided in the end of said leeve to receive said pin, resilient means for urging said bolt into position to release said blade, and means engaging the lug on said sleeve adapted when actuated to move said bolt to communicate a straining stress to the hack saw blade comprising a cylindrical cam rotatable on said sleeve and a lever for rotat ing said cam.

A device of the class described comprising a handle, a bolt for engaging one end of a hack saw blade, a sleeve on said bolt having slidable engagement in said handle, means to prevent rotation of said sleeve relation to said handle, a pin in said bolt projecting radially therefrom, a plurality of notches provided in the end of said sleeve to receive aid pin, resilient means for urging said bolt into position to release said blade, and means adapted when actuated to move said bolt to communicate a straining stress to the hack saw blade comprising a cylindrical cam rotatable on said sleeve, and
a lever for rotating said cam.
12. A device of the class described comprising a handle, a bolt for engaging one end of a hack saw blade, a sleeve on said bolt having slidable engagement in said handle, means to prevent rotation of said sleeve relative to said handle, a pin in said bolt, a plurality of notches provided in the end of said sleeve to receive said pin, means for urging said bolt into position to release said blade, and means adapted when actuated to move said bolt to communicate a straining stress to the hack saw blade.
13. A device of the class described comprising a handle, a bolt for engaging one end of a hack saw blade, a sleeve on said bolt engaging in said handle, means to prevent rotation of said sleeve relative to said handle, and means for permitting adjustment of said blade to any one of a plurality of cutting planes, comprising a pin in said bolt and a plurality of notches provided in the end of said sleeve for receiving said pin.
