Description

Feb. 10, 1948. c. CRARY 2,435,873
' AUTOMATIC CHANGE CHECK Filed Jan. 5, 1946 Patented Feb. 10, 1948 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE AUTOMATIC CHANGE CHECK Charles H. Crary, Hammond, Ind.
Application January 5, 1946, Serial No. 639,436
3 Claims. (Cl. 116-114) During rush seasons errors in making change increase, resulting in loss to both seller and purchaser, with accompanying inconvenience and anxiety.
It is an object of the invention to overcome the above dimculty and materially to contribute to the peace of mind of merchants and customers by the provision of an automatic device for reminding the operator of the cash register to be more careful to check or recheck the change on every operation of the cash register or till.
Further objects and advantages Of the invention will be apparent from the following description taken in conjunction with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 is a perspective of a cash register, with its money drawer open and the device in operative position;
Fig. 2, a fragmentary perspective illustrating the position of the device when the drawer is closed; and
Fig. 3, a perspective of the parts in spaced alignment.
Referring to the drawings, a, cash register l is'provided with a money drawer Ii, and partitions l 2 forming compartments for money of different denominations.
In order to remind the user of the money drawer to exercise care in making change and handling money, the present invention is employed and comprises a mounting plate I3 having a horizontal supporting flange I4, and fastening openings ii for the reception of fastening elements It, for attaching the mounting plate to the side of the drawer I l.
The mounting plate I3 is provided with a stub shaft or pivot pin I I on which the reminder mechanism is oscillatably mounted. This mech-.
anism is constructed so that it will not interfere with the operation of the cash register, including the opening and closing of the cash drawer, but will be strikingly visible only when the cash drawer is open and accessible for making change or depositing money therein or removing money therefrom. The reminder mechanism includes a card holder l8 having inwardly extending side flanges IQ for holding a card, and a top confining flange 20 disposed at a slight angle to the main body of the sign holder so that a card or sign 2| may be inserted and retained in the holder and not accidentally dislodged, such card having to be bent to be inserted.
The sign holder I8 is mounted on a supporting sleeve 22, formed integrally therewith or welded thereto. This sleeve 22 is of a length lightly less than the space between the side of the 2 drawer H and the partition wall l2, so that when the sleeve is on its supporting pivot l'l endwise movement of the sleeve sufiicient to permit it to work off the pivot I! will be prevented.
The plate 13 is mounted on the inner side of the wall of the drawer II in such a position that it will be exposed in close proximity'to the front of the cash register when the drawer is fully open, and that when the drawer is closed the back of the sign holder will be engaged and oscillated forwardly so that it will move into and be concealed in the compartment in which the drawer is contained.
In order to cause the sign holder with the sign to automatically move to an upright position when the drawer is opened, a spring 23 is utilized within the supporting sleeve 22 and upon the stub shaft or pivot pin I1. At one end the spring 23 is: provided with an extension with an extremity 24 for engaging an aperture 25 in the mounting plate and at its other end the spring is provided with an extension having a hook 26 for engaging the side of the sign holder in the manner as illustrated in Fig. 2. The extremities 24 and 26 of the spring are located 90 apart so that when the sign holder is collapsed within the closed money drawer the spring will be under tension and when the money drawer is opened the tension of the spring which engages the sign holder will cause it to be moved to an upright position.
The side flanges IQ of the sign holder are sumciently narrow to expose a maximum amount of the sign and due to the fact that these reversely turned sign retaining side portions are at the front they do not interfere with the operation of the device. Also, while the extensions of the spring are described as being located approximately 90 apart, they may be otherwise located in a manner to provide the necessary tension on the spring when the parts are assembled.
The use of the device is not confined to cash registers but may be employed in other relations, as for example in connection with the drawer or other slidable member of a cabinet or other cooperative structure,
It will be obvious to those skilled in the art that various changes may be made in the invention without departing from the spirit and scope thereof and therefore the invention is not limited by that which is shown in the drawing and described in the specification but only as indicated in the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A self-contained automatic reminder device for use with a drawer slidably received in a cabinet comprising a mounting plate having openings for the reception of fasteners by means of which it may be attached on one side of a drawer part, said mounting plate having a lateral flange for engagement with another side of said drawer 3 part, a horizontally disposed pivot pin carried by said mounting plate, a self-lifting card holder pivotally mounted on said pivot pin, said card holder comprising a sleeve member and an inends of said spring being disposed in angular relation so that the cardholder will be normally unde'r'tension tending to rotate When the parts are assembled, one end of said-spring being constructed to engage. saidcard holder and the other end to engage said: mounting plate'whereby said card holder will be moved to an upright position by said spring upon outward movement of said drawer and whereby said card holder will be moved to a depressed position upon inward movement of said drawer by engagement of said cardholder with said cabinet.
2. For use with a. cabinet and a drawer slidable into and from said cabinet; an' automatic reminder device for mounting on said drawer adjacent. the rear of the same, said reminder device comprising a mounting plate for attachment to a drawer part, a horizontally disposed pivot car-' ried. by said mounting plate, a card holder pivotally mounted on said pivot, said card holder comprising a sleeve and a relatively flat plate having edges bent to hold a card, a spring constructed to nest in said sleeveabout said pivot, said spring being attached at one end to said mounting plate and at the opposite end engaging said card holder to normally lift and maintain said card holder in an upright position upon openingv of said drawer and whereby said card holder will be moved to a depressed position upon inward movement of said drawer by engagement of said card holder with said cabinet.
3. In combination, a cabinet and a drawer slidable into and from said cabinet, an automatic reminder device mounted on said drawer adjacent the rear of the same, said reminder device comprisinga mounting plate having openings by means of which it may be attached on one side of a drawer part and having a lateral flange for engagement with another side of said drawer part, a horizontally disposed pivot member carried by said mounting plate, a card holder constructed to' be automatically pivoted to an upright anda, vdepressed position on said pivot member upon opening and closing of said drawer,
" said card holder comprising a sleeve and an integral relatively fiat plate having edges bent toward each other to hold a card therebetween, the free end of said plate being bent transversely of the surface of the plate to prevent the card from becoming accidentally dislodged. a spring of a length corresponding to the length of said sleeve, said spring constructed to nest in said sleeve about said pivot member, the ends of said spring being disposed in angular relation such that the card holder is normally under tension tending to rotate the same, one end of said spring engaging the card holder and the other end of the spring engaging said mounting plate whereby said card holder'will be automatically moved to an upright position by said spring upon outward movement of said drawer and whereby said card holder will be moved to a depressed position upon inward movement of said drawer by engagement of said card holder with said cabinet.
