BOOK HOLDER Louisjl Filed May 28, 1935 All" INVENTOR rnan de fl'am vos BY M W ATTORNEYS WITNESSES Patented Dec. 1, 1936 BOOK HOLDER Louis Hernandez Campos, New York, N. Y.
Application May 28,
1 Claim.
This invention relates to the class of holders and easels for holding books, magazines and the like, in open condition for reading, and also for displaying various commercial articles, advertising cards, pictures and the like.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of improvements in a device of the indicated character whereby the device may be readily used for the intended purposes, whereby the device may be folded compactly to occupy a small space when not in use, and so that it may be enclosed in a flat box or the like for convenience in handling by merchants and for making deliveries and shipments of the devices, and whereby the device will be of efiicient and substantial design.
The nature of the invention and its distinguishing features and advantages will appear when the following specification is read in connection with the accompanying drawing in which Figure l is a perspective view of a device embodying the invention set up for use;
Figure 2 is an enlarged section taken approximately on the line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a section of the device folded; and
Figure 4 is a view looking down on the device set up for use.
Referring now more particularly to the several views of the drawing, it will be apparent that the device of the present invention embraces an easel consisting of a frame ID of inverted U- shape, the side portions I being connected by a cross-piece l2. The opposite ends l3 of the cross-piece l2 are bent at a right angle and are secured to the portions M, respectively, in any suitable manner. In the present instance, the ends l3 are riveted to the portions II, as at M. A cross-piece i5 is pivotally connected with the lower ends of the portions I The cross-piece H3 is L-shaped in cross section to provide a support or rest I 6 and a notched flange ll integral therewith. The cross-piece is pivotally connected with the lower ends of the portions l I, and in the present instance, by lugs IE on the opposite ends of the flange H and extending rearwardly at right angles with respect thereto, and to pivots l9 which extend through the lugs l8, respectively, and into the portions The extremities of the rest |B engage the portions l l, as at 20 thus limiting the movement of the cross-piece I5 in one direction so that the rest l6 will be disposed approximately at a right angle to the frame In. The frame H] has connected therewith a suitable brace or prop 2|. In the present instance, the prop 2| is substantially of V-shape, and is con- 1935, Serial No. 23,935
nected with the portions H by pivots 22 in axial alinement with each other. The prop 2| has a notch 23.
The device also includes a rectangular frame 24 constituting a base for the easel. The frame 24 is pivotally connected with the lower ends of the portions H of the frame l by pivots 25. A rack consisting of a notched member 26 is secured within the frame 24. This is accomplished by riveting the opposite ends of the rack to the front and rear portions of the frame 24, as at 21. The rack 26 is designed and adapted to cooperate with the prop 2| to retain the easel II] in different angular positions in relation to the base frame 24. In this connection, it is to be observedthat the notch 23 in the prop 2| engages the rack.
In accordance with another feature of the invention, the device is provided with holders in the form of bowed springs at 28, connected with the rest l6, so as to engage the leaves of a book, or any other article placed on the rest and leaning against the easel frame ID, to prevent dis-' placement thereof. A connection is provided between the rest l6 and one end of each of the springs 28. The said connection includes a fiat part 29 having an opening 39 therein to receive a strap eye 3| which is secured to the rest l6 between its ends. The inner end of each spring 28 is pivotally connected with the part 29, as at 32 for adjustment with respect to the part 29. The springs 28 are thus connected for pivotal movement with respect to the part 29, and the part 29 is connected for pivotal movement with respect to the rest IS. The part 29 may be moved into engagement with the edge of the rest disposed at a right angle with respect thereto, thereby limiting its movement in one direction, and in this position of. the part 29, the springs 28 may be swung so that their free ends will be disposed above the rest Hi to engage the leaves of a book or any other object placed on the rest l6 leaning against the easel frame Ill, as shown in Figure 2.
The member 29 together with the springs 28 may be swung over the upper surface of the rest IS, the cross-piece l5 may be swung over the frame H], the prop 2| may be swung to a position within the frame In, and the frame l0 may be swung to a position within the base frame 24, the latter being large enough to accommodate the frame Hi. In this manner, the components of the device may be folded compactly, as shown in Figure 3, tooccupy a relatively small space when not in use, and to be enclosed within a fiat box or the like for easy handling by merchants and also for delivering and shipping quantities of the devices.
acts as a retaining flange, said retaining flange being provided at each end with an inturned ear and said support being formed at its ends with extensions overlapping the arms of said U- shaped frame whereby the swinging movement of the rest in one direction is limited, a pivot member for each of said ears for pivotally connecting the ears to the respective arms of said frame, and resilient means carried by said support centrally thereof for holding an article on the sup- 10 port against displacement.
