7 Claims.
This invention relates to a device which is useful for rigidly securing to each other parts to constitute a tower, pole or mast suitable for radio antennae or aerials.
' 'Anpbject of the invention is the provision of a'device of the indicated character which not only is adapted to secure structural components to each other rigidly, but also to afford good electrical conduction when the parts are made of suitable metal.
A further object is the provision of a suitable number of similar devices of the indicated character, whereby structural components may be rigidly secured to each other to constitute a tower, pole or mast, and which devices enable the use of guy lines for a mast, and which devices also enable the parts of the tower or mast to be detached from each other when it is desired to dismantle the tower or mast,
The nature of the invention and its distinguishing features and advantages will appear when the following specification is read in conjunction with the following drawing. in which- Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view through portions of two structural components telescoped and rigidly secured to each other by the use of a device of the present invention.

In' the drawing, there are shown by way of example components, sections or rod members It and II of a mast or pole which may be used to support an antenna or aerial. Said com onents I6 and II are tubular so that they may be telesco-ped to provide overlapping portions shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
One or more securing devices is applied to the overlapping portions of the tubular sections to rigidly secure them to each other in extended relation. Only one such device is shown in the present instance. The device is one which may be quickly and easily applied and likewise detached. In the case of a tower, pole or mast to be used to support an antenna for a radio receiving hookup or an aerial for a radio transmitting hookup. the sections or components constituting the structure as well as the parts of the securing devices will be made of metal for electrical conduction purposes.
The securing device consists of three coopera- 2 tivemain parts l2,'.l3'and I 4, respectively. The part I2 consists of a cross-bar I5 and a. clamping member or abutment I6 rigidly secured, as by welding H, or by any other means, to the crossbar It on one endthereof'and at a right angle with respect thereto. Pins I8 are rigidly secured, as by welding I9, to the clamping member I6 on the opposite ends, respectively, Each of the pins has a point 26. The cross-bar has a longitudinal slot 2 I I therein near the end opposite that having the clamping member I6. Beyond the slot 2I the cross-bar has a pointed end 22 to facilitate insertion. The cross-bar is' of a length which is greater than the diameter of the outer component I6 so that the slotted portion projects beyond the same. T
The part I3 is in the form of a bar and constitutes a clamping member or abutment. Pins 23, like the pins I8, are welded. as at 24, to the part It on the opposite ends thereof.
The part It is wedge shaped and constitutes a pressure exerting and locking key which is receivable in the slot 2| in'co-acting relation to the cross-bar I5 and the clamping member [3.
The components I0 and II are prepared to accommodatethe parts of the securing device, and for this purpose, the component I0 which surrounds the component I I has holes 25, there being a pair for the pins I8 and a pair for the pins 23 diametrically opposite those for the pins I8. Also, the component I0 has holes 26 diametrically opposit'e each other which register with holes 21 in the component II. The holes 26 and 21 are of a size toreceive the cross-bar I5. while the pins is are in their related holes 25. The pointed ends of thj e'pi'ns I B and23 project beyond the clamping surfaces of the respective "members I6 and I3 and serve as spacing means to compensate for any inequalities in the relative sizes of the components Ill and II. Also, these pointed pins are capable of penetrating any coating of paint on the components II to bite the latter so as to assure good electrical connection.
To apply the securing device, the cross-bar I5 of the part I2 is extended in the holes 26 and 21, respectively, and the pins I8 are entered into the related holes 25 with the clamping member I6 contacting the component Ill. The clamping member I3 is arranged in the slot 2I to extend at a right angle to the cross-bar I5 with the pins 23 in the related holes 25. The key I4 is then placed in the slot between the clamping member I3 and .the adjacent end wall of-the slot. The key I4 is forced down tightly causing it to bear on the member I3 and at the same time draw the member I6 toward the member I3. The pins I8 and 23 will bite the component I I. The member I3 contacts the component I0, and by virtue of the pins 23 sets up a clamping action on the component I I in conjunction with the pins I8, while the member I6 clampingly engages the component I0. Thus, these components, sections or rod members It) and I I are rigidly secured to each other in extended relation tor the intended purposes.
It is understood that the required number of components and securing devices will be used to constitute a, tower or mast of the desired height, The tower or mast will be rugged and by reason of the construction of the parts a structureoi the. type mentioned may be quickly and easily erected and dismantled.
The members I4 and I6 may have-provision, such as the holes 28, to accommodate guy lines to aid in sustaining a, mast or pole erect.

A metallic structure including rod members arranged in telescoping relation to each other, a T-shapesecuring part consisting of a cross-bar and an abutment on said cross-bar, said cross-bar having a longitudinal slot therein, said cross-bar extending transversely through the over-lapping portions of said rod members and the abutment contacting the outer rod member, a second abutment di posed in said slot and having means contacting the inner rod member, and a wedgeshape key disposed in said slot to exert a wedging. action in conjunction with the cross-bar and. second REFERENCES.
