This invention relates to toilet fixtures, and is illustrated herein as embodied in a sheet-metal urinal.

Metal urinals are commonly used aboard ship and in other situations where the usual, more sanitary, vitreous type of fixture is impracticable owing to its weight and fragility. It has been a customary practice to provide metal urinals with a flushing pipe separate from, but fastened to the inside thereof. This construction is costly and gives rise to unsanitary condition because of the difiiculty of cleaning the fixture adjacent to the pipe. Furthermore, the edges of a sheet-metal fixture must be covered and reenforced by a rim for the sake of appearance and preventing damage to the fixture.

In view of the foregoing, it is an object of this invention to provide a sanitary, and durable, low cost metal urinal.

This object is attained in the illustrated embodiment of the invention by the use of a combined reenforcing rim and flushing pipe which by eliminating the separate flushing pipe referred to above, minimize the problem of sanitation and at the sam time provides the fixture with the desired appearance and strength.

With the above and other objects and features in view, the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the invention and will be pointed out in the claim.

Fig. 1 is a front elevational view illustrating a urinal constructed according to this invention.

Fig. 2 is a side elevational view, partly cut away, of the urinal shown in Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view, the section being taken along the line III- III in Fig. 1.

Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view, the section being taken along the line IV- IV of Fig. 1.

With reference to the drawing, the illustrated urinal comprises a receptacle composed of a horizontal bowl I, and a vertical apron 2 which are preferably pressed as a single unit from a sheet of copper-nickel-iron alloy or other corrosionresistant metal. The apron 2 has forwardly extending sides which are continuous, as indicated at :3, with upwardly extending sides of the bowl I. Hence, the edge also of the apron and bowl are continuous with each other. Attached to the top of the apron 2 by rivets or solder is a bracket 4 for use in mounting the urinal on a bulkhead. Along the edges 8 of the bowl I and apron 2 is attached a continuous tubular rim 9, preferably made from the same metal as the rest of the fixture. Th rim 9 is pressed to have the cross section shown in Fig. 4, with a reentrant portion extending into a hollow curved portion. At the vertex of the reentrant portion of the rim is a groove ID in which the edges of the bowl I and apron 2 are seated and soldered to the rim as indicated at H. The rim 9 is also bodily bent to the contour of the edges 8 of the bowl and apron and is attached thereto throughout its length by the above-mentioned solder. The inner wall l2 of the reentrant portion of the rim 9 is disposed at an acute angle to the adjacent sides of the bowl I, and apron 2, and in overhanging or overlapping relationship thereto as illustrated in Fig. 4. Thus, the rim 9 does not prohibit access to any portion of the bowl I or apron 2 for purposes of cleaning, and constitutes a decorative as well as strengthening feature.

In the wall l2, a plurality of spaced openings [3 are drilled at short intervals longitudinally of the rim. Owing to the angular relation between the wall l2 and the adjacent sides of the fixture, these openings are arranged to direct flushing water or other liquid at the inner sides of the bowl I and apron 2 close to their edges 8 whereby the urinal is completely flushed.

Flushing liquid is introduced into the rim 9 through an opening l4 therein which communicates with a chamber I5 formed by a member IS, the latter being soldered at I! and [8 to the apron Z and rim 9, respectively. The member l6 serves to connect the inlet pipe 5 with the rim 9, and is further provided with a series of backwardly directed holes IQ for flushing the topcentral portion of the apron 2.

The rim 9 not only serves to reinforce the edge 8 of the body member I, but also serves as a flushing means eliminating the necessity of pro- This, in turn, decreases the cost of the urinal and makes it more sanitary.

The invention described herein may be manufactured and used by or for the government of the United States of America for governmental purposes without the payment of any royalty thereon or therefor.

What I claim is:

A toilet fixture comprising a bowl, an upright apron having forwardly extending sides the edges of which are continuous with the edges of said bowl, said bowl and said apron being formed of sheet metal, means for flushing said fixture comprising a tube having a reentrant portion and a hollow rounded portion into which said renecting said inlet fitting and said tube, said chamber being perforated for directing flushing liquid at the portion of said apron behind said chamber, and an outlet fitting connected to the 5', bottom of said bowl.
